NEW-LOOK FORMAT FOR NCAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN 2015-16

As the Lehigh women’s basketball season gets underway, a new-look format of the game will be implemented following new- ly-passed NCAA Rules. Here are some of the most important rule changes to keep in mind:

1. Four quarters instead of two halves

Playing time will consist of four ten-minute periods with a halftime intermission of 15 minutes. Overtime periods shall be five minutes each with a one-minute intermission before each. The rationale behind the rule is that the four-quarter format will increase the flow of the game by reducing stoppages, aligns with all other levels of play and provides natural breaks that usually occur with current media timeout formats.

2. Three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout

The competing teams will be granted three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout per game. Teams are allowed to carry three timeouts into the second half. One media timeout will take place per quarter, with the media timeouts occurring at the first dead ball at or below the five-minute mark of each quarter and at the end of the first and third quarters. If a team calls timeout before the five-minute mark, that would be treated as the media timeout. The first called team timeout in the second half will be treated as a full media timeout. Each team will be awarded one 30-second timeout in each overtime peri- od, plus any unused timeouts remaining from the second half.

3. Advancing the ball beginning at 59.9 second mark of the fourth quarter and any overtime periods

Teams will be allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt following a timeout immediately after a made basket in the last 59.9 seconds of the fourth quarter and any overtime periods. Teams will also be allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt after securing the ball from a rebound or a change of possession. In these scenarios, the ball would be inbounded at the 28- foot mark on the side of the court where the scorer’s table is located. The rule is meant to create end-of-game excitement.

4. Two foul shots for every foul after the fifth of each quarter, no more 1-and-1

Teams will now reach the bonus and shoot two free throws on the fifth team foul in each quarter. Previously, teams reached a one-and-one bonus on the seventh team foul of each half and reached the double bonus (two shots) on the tenth team foul. In the four-quarter format, team fouls reset to zero at the start of each quarter. If a team reaches the bonus in the fourth quar- ter, that team would remain in the bonus during any additional overtime periods.

5. Post defense

Defenders can now place a forearm or an open hand with a bend in the elbow on an offensive post player with the ball whose back is to the basket. The rule was passed in effort to allow for more freedom of movement.
