OUR VIEW ANOTHER VIEW Politics of impeachment

tlantic magazine recently had some interesting observations about the way the House Democrats’ A impeachment effort is playing in the Heartland (“Nobody talks about impeach- ment on the campaign trail,” Nov. 3). It’s not one of the issues resonat- ing with voters. “The impeachment fight ... is the biggest story in politics. No one is talking about anything else — except pretty much everywhere out- side of Washington,” the story noted. The author, Edward-Isaac Dovere, attended an Iowa event in which 13 Demo- cratic candidates spoke for four hours. Only one — billionaire Tom Steyer, who has been running pro-impeachment advertisements for two years, beginning long before the lat- est Ukraine kerfuffle — even mentioned it. As Dovere noted, that’s not by happen- stance. The candidates “have teams of advis- ers and internal polls and focus groups and months of personal interactions that are telling them the topic gets them nowhere, for the same reasons they didn’t talk much on the trail about Special Counsel Robert Keeping up With the Ukrainians Mueller’s report before or after a redacted version of it was released in the spring.” Candidate Andrew Yang, a fierce critic of President Trump, warned the House Demo- crats’ effort will boomerang on the party. “We have to face the facts, where not a single Republican crossed the aisle to sup- port the impeachment vote,” Yang said. “That would certainly suggest that impeach- ment’s going to run aground in the Senate and this is going to wind up [with] Donald Trump claiming innocence and vindication.” The story also quoted Gov. Gina Raimondo, who was on her way to an event and “expecting to continue her week- long streak of not hearing a single person in her state bring up impeachment.” Raimondo, chair of the Democratic Gov- ernors Association, is concerned “the con- versations on cable television and Twitter are impeachment-obsessed — instead of focused on issues that Democrats usually win on,” Dovere reported, such as health care and the difficulty of making ends meet. “Doctors say, ‘Listen to the patient long enough and they’ll tell you what’s House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff, talks last month about an wrong with them,’” Raimondo told upcoming vote that would be on procedures for impeachment hearings, not on whether to impeach President the reporter. “We need to listen.” Trump. PACE — Principal Barbara Scott, her staff and 758 kin- dergarten through third grade students celebrated all veterans during their annual Veterans Day Program at the school’s cafeteria on Nov. 8. “It’s meant to honor those that have passed and those that continue their service to our country,” Scott said. Students were encouraged to invite family members that served or are currently serv- ing in our country’s armed services. That made for a large crowd when you take into account the number of military installations in the area. The tribute is also meant to educate students about the country and the U. S. Armed Forces, said Carla Moulyet, a second grade teacher and master of ceremony for the event. This year’s tribute included the presentation of mili- tary flags by second graders Gracie Green, carrying the Army flag; Turner Hart, S.S. In between songs, the patriotic characters Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam and Betsy Bald Eagle would give the audience a little histori- cal trivia. For example, Uncle Sam, though disputed, was named S.S.
