FIRE OUT OF THE GATE: Ryan Williamson got off to as hot a start on the mound as anyone else in the SOMERSET Professional Baseball Series. The lefty appeared in each of the first three games of the series, earning two wins and striking out 11 of the 14 batters he faced. The strikeouts accounted for 11 of the first 12 outs he recorded.

TWICE DRAFTED: Williamson was selected twice in the Amatuer Draft. He was originally selected in the 28th round of the 2013 draft by the Texas Rangers out of high school and then later drafted in the 15th round of the 2016 draft by the Washington Nationals out of North Carolina State Univeristy

HIGH SCHOOL SENSATION: Williamson enjoyed a remarkable high school baseball career at Cranford High School. There, the southpaw won three New Jersey state championships over his four years at school (2010, 2012-’13). He went 6-0 with a 0.52 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 47 innings as junior in 2012 and was named an honorable mention All-American by Perfect Game. KING KUBIAK: David Kubiak made 12 starts in Somerset in 2019 before his contract was purchased in early July. At the time of his last start in Somerset, Kubiak led the Atlantic League in wins (7), ERA (1.76), strikeouts (82), WHIP (0.92) and BAA (.173). He was also tabbed as the 2019 Liberty Division All-Star Game starting pitcher

ALL-TIME RANKS: The Long Island native currently ranks third in franchise history in ERA (3.09, min. 225 innings pitched), fifth in strikeouts (294), 11th in games started (44), 12th in wins (20) and 14th in innings (276.2). He also owns the record for most consecutive scoreless innings (33.2) which was recorded from May 10 to June 4, 2019.

HOT STARTS: Kubiak has made a habit of getting off to hot starts to begin his season. In 2019, the 6’7” righty was named the Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month in April/ May for a 4-0, 0.95 ERA start to his year including three separate 10+ performances. CLUBHOUSE VET: Mazzaro brings eight seasons of MLB service to the SOMERSET Professional Baseball Series – the most of any active player in the series. The 33-year old broke into the bigs with the Oakland A’s in 2009 and posted a 24-23 record with a 4.79 ERA and one save across 140 Major League contests (45 starts).

STRONG FINISH: Mazzaro finished his 2019 season on a strong note. After beginning the year as a relief pitcher for the rival , Mazzaro turned his season around once he was plugged into the starting rotation on July 24th. The former Royals, Pirates, Marlins and Giants arm went 8-0 with a 2.15 ERA and 57 strikeouts over 58.2 innings after he transitioned back to the rotation. NOT LEIT ON SERVICE: Leiter Jr. represents the lone member of the current Somerset Patriots roster to have service time in Major League Baseball. The Toms River North HS grad made his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017 and split time between the Phillies and Blue Jays in 2018. Overall, Leiter Jr. is 3-7 with a 5.53 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 114 innings across two seasons in the bigs. He tossed six shutout, three-hit innings with five strikeouts in his first MLB start (6/23/17 at Arizona Diamondbacks)

HIGHEST OF LANDERS: When Leiter Jr. was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2013 draft out of NJIT, he became the first Highlander to ever be selected in the MLB draft. He remains the program’s all-time strikeouts leader. Additionally, Leiter Jr. set a single-season program record in his senior season with 106 strikeouts.

SOLID BLOODLINES: If Leiter Jr.’s name sounds familiar, it should. The Manahawkin native is the son of former MLB pitcher Mark Leiter Sr. and is the nephew of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter. Mark played 11 seasons in the Majors (1990-01) with eight different clubs, while Al played 19 seasons (1987-05) and was a 2x MLB All-Star (’96 & ’00)

LONG RELIEF: Vargas was used exclusivey out of the bullpen over his first three appearances in the SOMERSET Professional Baseball Series. His three innings of relief in his

debut on July 18th still stand as the longest relief appearance of any pitcher in the series through the first 10 games.

PINSTRIPES PRIDE: Vargas originally signed with the New York Yankees as a 16-year old in 2015 out of the Dominican Republic. In 2017, he split 13 games (all starts) between Short-Season Staten Island and Single-A Charleston as a 19-year old. He combined to go 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 48 strikeouts over those 13 starts.

MOST RECENTLY: Vargas split his 2019 season between High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Tennessee in the Chicago Cubs organization, spending most of his time in High-A with the Pelicans. There, Vargas went 2-5 with a 4.78 ERA and 47 strikeouts against 13 walks across 79.0 innings pitched over 18 games (13 starts).
