FAA Acting Administrator Michael Huerta was guided through a private exhibit hall visit in the Min- neapolis convention Center, stop- ping at select booths. This week’s convention showcases products and services from nearly 200 companies supporting the regional airline industry.

In his opening remarks, Huerta said he was “impressed with the next generation aircraft, engine technol- ogy and avionics on display. In spending just a few quick minutes in the hall today, it’s clear that this truly is a pivotal time in aviation history.

What might be the state of aviation in 20 years? Lindbergh Foundation Board Member John Petersen told the Presidents Council luncheon yesterday that by 2030 “the industry can expect a minimum of 150 times technological change of last century.” Why? Petersen outlined five areas of expected change, including: extraor- dinary computational changes, materials revolution; new fuels; an all electric world; China’s growth in air service. These forces, plus an internet revolution will provide “a big contextual change” to the future of aviation. Petersen believes driving forces such as climate change and social shifts will also lead to big breakthroughs in avia- tion citing examples such as Richard Branson’s plans to launch the Virgin Galactic- -a flying space ship--this year and a flying car.

Jazz Aviation is the winner of the first Innovation in Safety Management Award selected for its success at integrating SMS across aviation safety, qual- ity, health and safety, as well as business. The Canadian RAA member was praised for its innovative merging of multiple reporting and management systems achieving a 50% reduction in database running costs. David Deveau, Jazz Aviation VP-Safety, Quality and Environment, accepted the award recently in London at the third European Safety Seminar hosted by Baines Simmons.

RAA salutes NAASCO’s John Karamanian for his “perfect attendance” record having been a participant of every RAA Convention for the past 37 years. A long-time supporter of the association, 82-year-old Karamanian has been involved with the association since its creation as the Commuter Air Association in the mid-1970s.

Silver Airways has taken delivery of two more Saab 340BPlus aircraft, bringing its fleet to six, a number it plans to double by September. The two new 340s are expected to begin operating in scheduled passenger service on June 1. “By the end of the year, the 12 Saabs we’re acquiring will enable us to increase flights in Florida and Bahamas routes by 30%,” Darrell Richardson, Silver’s CEO, said. “At the same time, our seat capacity will growly nearly 75%, strengthening our leadership position in these markets.” Silver also is looking for more 340s to expand the fleet further.

Mitsubishi aims for fair share of larger RJ market Mitsubishi Aircraft is targeting 2015 for service entry of the first new MRJ to launch customer All Nippon Airways. The company has 130 orders from three customers and hopes to take advantage of a market forecast that weighs heavily in favor of RJs in the 70 to 100 seat range. The manufacturer says that new technology on the MRJ could result in about $1.4 million in savings a year in fuel costs per aircraft. The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitey PW1200G geared turbofan engines that are designed to reduce noise and emissions as well as fuel consumption. The first flight of the MRJ is expected in the fourth quarter 2013, with first delivery set for the fourth quarter 2014 to ANA airline, which has 25 orders. Trans States Holdings has 100 orders (50 firm Yugo Fukuhara Mitsubishi director, marketing left and Hitoshi Hank Iwasa VP sales and orders with 50 options) and ANI Group Holdings of Hong Kong has an marketing, right MoU for five MRJs. First flight has been delayed more than a year, but company officials say the program is back on track and technology issues have been resolved. A mockup of the aircraft cabin is on display this week in the exhibit hall in booth 1140. The MRJ features an 80 inch high cabin, with seat width of 18.5 inches. Mitsubishi is forecasting a demand for 5,600 aircraft of 70-to 100 seats over the next 20 years, which will account for 20% of the overall market. “The 70 to 90 seat is a good fit for the US market,” said Hitoshi Hank Iwasa, VP Sales and Marketing for Mitsubish Aircraft. He said he hopes the company hopes to sell up to 1000 MRJs. “We are a very new player in this.”

MRJ mock up shows that size does matter. 80 inches high by 108.5 inches across. Generous seating is at 18.5 inches with an 18 inch aisle.

Republic Airlines has signed a tentative agreement to operate 32 Bombardier Q400 aircraft under the United Express brand -- 28 of them currently being operated by Colgan Air and another four already in Republic’s fleet. The capacity purchase agreement, to run about eight years, is expected to become effective in the third quarter, with the transition likely to begin in August. The pact is contingent on completing negotiations and signing agreements with aircraft lessors. “We are confident our experience with the Q400 turboprop aircraft will translate to a level of service that will meet the high expectations of United and their customers,” Bryan Bedford, Republic chairman, president and CEO said.

Bombardier Aerospace has signed an exclusive agreement with Republic Airlines to provide all heavy maintenance for 32 Bombardier Q400s through June 2021. All heavy maintenance tasks will be performed at Bombardier’s US service centers in Macon, GA, and Tucson, AZ. The 32 Q400s also will be en- rolled in Bombardier’s Smart Parts program, which provides competitive, pre- dictable repair costs and full availability of key aircraft components. Bombardier started the program for its business aircraft — and has more than 1,000 aircraft in the program — but has expanded to include Q400 aircraft components for regional carriers around the world. Gary Martin, Bombardier vice president, sales, marketing and services program, said there has been a sharp increase in Q400 enrollments over the past year. Bradley Elstad, Republic vice president, safety and regulatory compliance, said the airline expects its services agreement with Bombardier would lead to increased safety and reliability for the fleet. Company vows support of SuperJet program as investigation of crash continues Representatives of SuperJet International said that support for the SSJ100 Program will continue despite the recent tragedy that occurred in Indonesia when a demonstration flight of the aircraft apparently plowed into a mountainside, killing the 45 people on board. The accident remains under investigation. Giacoma Perfetto, SJI’s head of communication, read a prepared statement yesterday with an update on the accident investigation as well as the SuperJet program. “While it is still far too early to determine the cause of the crash, we are fully engaged with our partner Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and the appropriate authorities, providing them with every assistance we can,” said the statement issued by SJI CEO Nazario Caucegial. “During this difficult time we would like to assure you that every effort is being made to determine what went wrong and why.” He added, “We also want to assure you that we continue to fully support the SSJ100 program. It does not alter our belief in the product or its safety.” The aircraft took off from Jakarta-Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport on May 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm local time and lost radio contact about 20 minutes later. The wreckage of the aircraft was found hours later on the slopes of Mount Salak. The aircraft MSN 95004 made its first flight on July 25, 2009 and had accumulated more than 800 flight hours in 500 flights. No serious technical problems were ever reported. SJI expressed condolences for the victims and their families and said that there would be no additional comments on the accident. Further statements would come from appropriate authorities.

GE looks to next generation engines for RJs and turboprops Work continues on GE Aviation’s newest engines, the NG34 for regional jets and a next generation CPX38 engine for turboprops. The longer development of these two new engines take, the better the technology will be said Allen Paxson, GE’s general manager regional and large business aviation. “The investment in new technology grows each year,” Paxson said. The NG34 technology program will incorporate GE’s fuel efficient, low emission eCore which will offer a 15% to 20% improvement in fuel efficiency over the current CF34-10e engines, Paxson said yesterday. “We’re build- ing on the CF34 field experience and investing in new component technologies for the next generation NG34.” Deliveries of CF34 engines recently topped 5,500 with more than 82 million flight hours and 66 million cycles. The highest thrust rating for the CF34 engine family is 20,000 lbs. Paxson said that GE received more than 100 orders for CF34 engines over the past year, mostly for larger RJs and he expects a robust market for the engines over the next 20 years with a forecast delivery of 5000 regional Allen Paxson jets. The company is also working to develop the next generation CPX38 Power engine. Designed for turboprops in the 60- to 90-seat range, it will incorporate a simple, modular design that offers a 15% reduction in fuel burn. It will also be designed for ‘severe environment’ performance with a goal of 99.95% reliability. The technology on both engines is “ready to go” but must be adapted to the requirements of the airframe manufacturers, Paxson said. He noted the role that regional carriers play in the US aviation network, where more than 75% of the airports in the US are supported solely by regional aircraft. “The CF34 has been a huge piece of that.”

“The investment in new technology grows each year,”

ATR, coming off its best commercial year ever, is extremely optimistic about the future of turboprops, ac- cording to Mark Neely, vice president marketing & sales for ATR North America. “We see turboprop demand remaining,” he said. “Nothing is going to beat a turboprop on a short-haul market.” ATR won 157 firm orders for its ATR42 and ATR72 turboprops in 2011 from 18 customers, including 10 new customers; its best-ever backlog at the end of the year was 224 aircraft, valued at $5 billion, Neely said. The leasing community also is playing an increasing role in acquiring turboprop aircraft for their portfolios, he noted, with lessors last year accounting for 21% of ATR’s orders. With its increased orders, ATR is ramping up production by more than 60% over the next three years. With more than 180

Pratt & Whitney Canada has begun testing the compressor for a next-generation regional turboprop engine, a step it says will make it technology ready for an advanced regional turboprop in the 70-90 seat category. “It’s a multi-phase program where we will be testing various parts of the compressor system, the main technology innovation of the engine,” Richard Dussault, P&WC vice president – marketing, regional airline & helicopter engines,” told Regional Horizons in an interview. “It’s a brand-new compressor designed specifically for the regional marketplace.” The rest of the engine is derived from technology that exists within the Pratt & Whitney group. Examples are the TALON combustor and high pressure turbines developed by P&W in East Hartford and being used on its new PurePower PW1000G geared turbofan engine family. The compressor will be tested by P&WC the rest of the year and into next year, about an eight-twelve month program, Dussault said. The first run will conclude at the end of this month and the second run will start in July, Dussault said yesterday at a briefing at RAA. Richard Dussault, Pratt & Whitney Canada P&WC’s commitment to the idea of a new advanced turboprop centerline engine began two years ago when vice president - marketing it started designing a demonstration program for such an engine to power a next-generation turboprop. In testing the compressor, the engine REGIONAL MARKET LINKS maker will be gathering performance data enabling it to make design iterations -- all to be ready for a launch next year. “We would launch once we had a customer that commits to the program,” he added, noting such a step would require an OEM commitment and the power defined. He expects the platform would be a new aircraft with around 90 seats, the size the airlines are saying they would like, with the new centerline

Pratt & Whitney Canada’s next generation regional turboprop engine engine delivering a 20% improvement in fuel burn over today’s fleet. “We want to be ready to launch in 2013,” he said, with entry into service on a new aircraft in 2017. An engine launch next year would al- low P&WC to deliver engines, already flown on its aircraft testbed, to an OEM in 2016, he said. “Nobody is questioning the demand,” Dussault said yesterday. Reluc- tance so far to make the required investment by the two logical OEMs already producing turboprops -- ATR and Bombardier -- may reflect the ASM – the global experts in Route Development current state of European and North American economies, he suggested, Rely on ASM for global route development and airport marketing and get and may have to wait until the economies pick up. the insights you need to achieve your airport’s goals.
