COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Reflections From Pastor Dennis

Soon a new billboard will be going up at Hwy. 160 & “Y”. Nothing has been on that billboard for a long time and so this will provide a fresh look at that intersection and best of all it’s our billboard.

This has been paid for through a generous donation that was given for advertising. We are grateful for the gift. The committee decided on the image of the church, since that identifies our location, yet it doesn’t identify who we are. Who we are is in the phrase “always involved”. We are a people who are involved in many ways within and beyond the community. Our hope is that the billboard will lead more people to come, see and become a part of all the great things being done in and through Community Presbyterian Church.

It will help, yet the real work is done by you and me as we tell others about Christ and how we serve Christ in and through Community Presbyterian Church. Jesus said unto His disciples;

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

I believe this call to us begins in our own backyards and neighborhoods.

We’ll soon be getting new reusable shopping bags to give to others. When someone moves into your area, even if they are only moving across town, feel free to come and get a few to give to them as you welcome them as your neighbor.

I want to thank the committee that worked on the billboard and the businesses involved. My prayer is that God add His blessing unto this good work as we seek to reach out His name and share His love.

Also in this newsletter you’ll see a picture of the bench that sits in front of the church. It looks brand new, but it’s really the one donated to the church by Clayton Cooper in memory of his dad. Deb and Jim Robbers took it home, tore it apart, painted it and put it back together. It really is very attractive. On a nice springtime day, you just might find me enjoying a moment on it as I enjoy being pastor to the people of Community Presbyterian Church, to the community of Forsyth and Taney County.

Blessed May springtime to one and all, Dennis STATED MEETING DIGEST April 10, 2014 - 6:30 p.m. QUORUM PRESENT

OLD BUSINESS - GOALS FOR 2014 Signage (July, 2014) - committee Mary Parr, Pat Seals, Liz Rogers Work is progressing on the design of the billboard sign to be placed at Hwy. Y and Hwy. 160 inter- section. It will coordinate with the shopping bags, car decals and other advertising. A one-year con- tract (May 2014 to April 2015) is signed and paid for.

Small Groups - The first small group started with 18 participants and attendance has been fairly consistent throughout the six weeks. The Wednesday evening meetings will continue as we study the Bible scripture which ties in with the Sunday sermon. If there is sufficient interest in another topic of study, a second group may be coordinated.

NEW BUSINESS Request for Use of Hospitality Room Ozark Mountain Music, which is a 501C3 not-for-profit organization, requests the use of the hospitali- ty room to hold classes Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for three or four students. The maximum number of students for the class would be seven and an instructor and a parent will be in attendance. They are also the proud sponsors of “The Possum Holler Fiddlers”. Approved by elders.

May is such a busy month for everyone. There is Mother’s Day, baccalaureates, graduations, end of year programs and preparing for VBS and several other events I have probably forgotten. All great occasions for celebrations. As I read your newsletters and see the many ways you are pre- paring for such events, I also see how wonderful it is to be a part of the body of Christ. It is fun to get together, share ideas and plan special events when Jesus is your focus. It is also a time when we prepare to celebrate Pentecost. I will have to say that I wish churches celebrated Pentecost as much as they did Christmas and Easter. They are all significant times for the church. I am curious how many churches do have a special celebration on Pentecost and what that celebration entails. I would love to hear from you about your celebration. My email is [email protected]. Looking forward to hearing from you.

5 PANTHER PARTNERS MENTOR PROGRAM

A child will soon forget the “presents” you give them, but they’ll never forget your “presence” in their life.

Spring is here! And that means it’s time to seek volunteers who would like to mentor a first grader at Forsyth Elementary School for this fall! We have found that meeting with the child for 30 minutes a week seems to work best. We’ve had fun getting to know our child through games and puzzles (available in the Game Closet in the room where we meet one-on-one with the child), through reading books, or eating lunch with them.

We currently have 61 mentors from 8 area churches who are enjoying their mentor- ing experience. Our goal is for our current mentors to continue this fall with the same child who will be advancing to the next grade. Hopefully there will be 20 new volunteers each fall to mentor incoming 1st graders. These are children who can benefit from a long-term, positive role model in their lives. If you have any ques- tions about being a mentor, please call Jeanne Legge at 546-3255 or talk with one of the other mentors to get some feedback about their experiences.

Many of us travel during the year but have been able to send postcards to the child while we’re gone and share our adventures/pictures with the child upon our return. So, your travel shouldn’t be a barrier in being a mentor.

Training will be provided to mentors in early September. Please pray about how you can be part of this great opportunity to show God’s love for the children of Forsyth and, in turn, have a rewarding experience.

If you want to volunteer, or are just curious and need more information, please leave this form in the church office or in the offering plate.
