The beginning of September, for many, marks the beginning of a new year –a new academic year. It is a good time to reflect, to plan and to act. For your consideration, I would like to propose Christian Meditation. Christian Meditation is a form of prayer that is firmly rooted in the Christian tradition. It is a prayer of silence and listening. The daily practice of Christian Meditation helps to ensure we create a meaningful and continuing space for God in our lives. Keeping our faith alive is a challenge for all of us. We have so many distractions; so many calls on our time and attention. The daily practice of Christian Meditation provides a structure to our prayer and a seed-bed for the nurturing of our faith. It brings us closer to Jesus. Learning of Christian Meditation from a friend has, for me, been a life changing discovery. I have found that it helps me to become more aware of God·s presence in my life and in the world around me. Far from being a departure from the way of prayer that I grew up with, it enlivens and gives more meaning to my prayer, whether that be assisting at mass with my neighbor's or a recitation of the rosary on my own. I am experiencing other benefits from the practice: I am becoming more relaxed; I am becoming a better listener; I am becoming more aware of and grateful for the many blessings I have received. Fortunately, we have a Christian Meditation Group in St. Anthony·s and another in St. John the Baptist·s Parish. The purpose of these groups is to support, encourage and provide guidance to those who are practicing Christian Meditation. The Christian Mediation group in St Anthony·s meets in the meeting room at the back of the church. The meeting in St. John·s is held in the presbytery on Clontarf Road. Both meetings are held every Monday evening at 8.00 p.m. Each is a short meeting, usually lasting 1 hour. They are silent meetings, much of the time being spent in silent prayer. If you would like to learn more about Christian Meditation, you could talk to Ian Murphy (853 1026) or Breffni McGuiness (853 2181). Alternatively, you could come along to either meeting any Monday evening at 8.00 p.m. A member of the St Anthony·s Christian Meditation Group
