Former MSU basketball and baseball standout Steve Hamilton is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Eagle baseball program, after guiding the Eagles to a record of 116-84 in his initial five campaigns. In those five years, MSU has won two eastern division titles and one OVC championship, with Hamilton being named as league "Coach of the Year" in 1977. Hamilton earned All-American honors in basketball at MSU in 1957. He twice was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team . He distinguished his basketball career by setting all of MSU's rebounding marks. He currently holds the marks for rebounds in a game (38), rebounds in a season (543), rebounds in a four-year career (1,675), best rebounding average in a season (20.1) and best rebounding average in a career (16.4). He also is the No. 3 all-time scorer at MSU with 1,829 points. But the slender native of Charlestown, Indiana, will probably be remembered most for his days. Hamilton spent 11 seasons in the majors and played for the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Cubs. He stayed with the Yankees for seven and one-half seasons and played in two World Series. He retired from the major leagues following the 1972 season and managed the Johnson City (Tenn.) franchise in the Appalachian League in 1973. Hamilton returned to the majors as pitching coach of the Detroit Tigers in 1975 under his long-time friend and former manager, Ralph Houk, but returned to MSU in 1976. "In baseball, I left home for seven months out of the year and could see my family for only a day at a time," said Hamilton. " I decided I wanted to stay to home." Hamilton was appointed the Eagle field boss when John (Sonny) Allen was elevated to assistant athletic director. Allen served as head coach for 14 seasons. Hamilton received his bachelor·~ degree from MSU in 1958 and his master's degree in 1963.

Frank Sims Graduate Assistant Coach

Frank Sims, 28, of Charleston, Ill., will serve as graduate assistant coach with the MSU baseball program this spring. A graduate of the University of Iowa where he played two years as an outfielder on a Big 10 championship squad, Sims also played two seasons for Lake Land Junior College in Mattoon, Ill. "We expect Frank to add a tremendous amount to our program," stated Hamilton. " He will be responsible for all our infield and outfield play and should be a big help to our hitters." A former head coach at Sparta High School in Sparta, Ill., Sims posted three winning seasons on the varsity level. , Coaching Records Since 1946

For Morehead State University Eagle Baseball Coach Steve Hamilton, the question is simple: "Can you win with a young pitching staff?" That will bEflhe main concern as Hamilton's charges open the season, as six members of his mound corps are gone, i11c,luding four seniors. Leading tire will be junior Mike Mattox, who has been the most consistent on the staff the past two seasons. Included in Mattox's list of accomplishments is a no-hit game in the fall exhibition season. A probable for No. 2 position on the mound staff will be junior Glenn Napier, a member of the MSU basketball team. Napier's effectiveness will depend on how rapidly he makes the jump from basketball to baseball. The only other upperclassman on the staff is senior lefthander Mark Molitor, who was effective early last season until sidelined by a back injury. The remaining six pitchers include one sophomore and five freshmen, making the staff one of the youngest in the country. Included are sophomore Scott Haynes and freshmen David Armentrout, Ted Carter, Ricky Layne, David Michael, and Brad Redmon. With only two seasoned starters, Hamilton will have to depend heavily on the younger players to assume starting roles. Youth could also be a problem with the squad's other positions, although it isn't as critical as the pitching. Behind the plate, the Eagles return senior Jeff White, a solid defensive performer with the ability to carry a team offensively. Backing up White are freshmen Tom Rastani and Mark Swartz. At first base, freshman John Bennett could be the heir to the departed Jody Hamilton, with junior Don Allen and freshman Randy Lambert providing support. Senior Chris Auer will return for his fourth season as a starter at second base and will be backed by freshmen Chris Hail and Steve Roberts. At shortstop, junior Jamey Bennett will get the nod after making the move from the third base position in the fall, while freshman Joe Mitchell should get the starting job at third base. In the outfield, four players, senior John Combs, junior Mark Davis, junior Glenn Jones, and sophomore Alan Steele will battle for the three slots. Should one or more of the younger pitchers move successfully into the starting rotation and Hamilton's charges avoid injury to key personnel, the Eagles could challenge for the OVC Eastern Division title and a berth in the four-team conference playoffs.
