IMPLEMENTATION PROGRPROGRESSESS REPORT 888

REPORT BY DEVELOPMENT OFFICOFFICERERERER

FOR CLUB AGM ON 14 OCTOBER 2014

6 October 2014 Cumann Pheadair Naofa Implementation Progress Report by Development Officer – October 2014

I attach in supporting documentation, Progress Report 8, (Appendix 1) a summary of how CPN performed against the targets in the Club Development Plan for the first fifty four months (4 ½ years).

The development of the Club Development Plan was a very good thought provoking process for the Club. It provided an excellent framework for establishing where we were, where we wanted to be, and how we proposed to get there. I would like to note the recent sad death of our Club Community and Outreach Officer Ann McGeeney, who played a very pro-active role in the evolvement of the Club Development Plan.

Much progress has been achieved with the implementation of the Club Development Plan over the past 54 months, as reflected in the club’s recent submission of its Club Maith Accreditation renewal application (2 October 2014) and the club winning the prestigious “Large Club of the Year” category at the Irish News GAA Club and Volunteer Awards in 2011 and 2013 (and being runner-up in 2012 and 2014), the Club Maith Platinum Award in November 2011, and the South Down GAA Club of Year Award 2012. CPN was also acknowledged for a Special Achievement Award at the & Mourne Sports Awards 2012 on 7 March 2013.

Games Development has been greatly enhanced by further developing internal coaching courses and seminars, the provision of new weights room facility, the acquisition of bespoke computer statistical software and the introduction of a new inter-club blitz, the addition of to Easter and Summer Hurling Weeks and the introduction of new Ladies inter-club blitz, to complement the three underage inter-club Gaelic Football tournaments introduced in 2012. In addition the club has added an U-14 Ladies Gaelic Football team to its U-12 team. CPN also fielded an U-14 four man Handball team this year following its success in the Down Féile na nGael U-14B competition in 2013. CPN under the leadership of Declan Doyle, are now planning to enter our first Down Adult Handball competition within 2 weeks, with 2 teams (12 players). The hosting of Féile na nGael An Duin by the club over the past two years enhanced the promotion of Hurling and Camogie at underage level and the fact that our U-14 Hurling team advanced to the National Féile on each occasion, was a tremendous experience. Furthermore the club facilitated coaching through its Club / School Liaison Initiative for coaching of Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Ladies Gaelic Football and Handball to be provided at St. Dallan’s P.S. The Club facilitated inaugural Rounders Tournament at St. Dallan’s. Two teachers from St. Dallan’s Primary School were encouraged to become new Ladies Gaelic Football Coaches in the Club and a second Gaelic 4 Girls programme was organised in Feb/March 2014.

It is no co-incidence that the implementation of the 5 Year Club Development Plan has resulted in an increase in participation and success of club teams.

Over the past seventeen months, the club continued to make progress, with the launch of the Club Healthy Club Project, the issuing of the Club Healthy Club Audit Questionnaire, the summarising of the results of the survey and the implementation of a year long Healthy Club programme of events. A new Social Initiative Co- ordinator (Seamus Murphy) was appointed and a new Alcohol, Substance and Abuse Programme (ASAP) Officer (Gemma Murphy) was appointed. Both of these new officers oversaw the introduction of new activities, such as Social Initiative

Page 1 Cumann Pheadair Naofa Implementation Progress Report by Development Officer – October 2014 outings and the B+ Positive Health Programme for the U-14 age group. The collective Club community effort was reflected in the Club winning the float competition in the Maiden of the Mournes International Festival for the past three years.

The promotion of Irish culture within the club continues to be very strong, with the Youth Irish drama group, performing another excellent play, Is Iontach an Saol é and classes continue, with the club provided three Gaeltacht Scholarships to complement scholarships won by club members. Our Scor na nOg instrumental team won a 2014 county title. Junior Irish dancing classes continue and there were a large number of club entries in the Fleadh dancing competitions. Our young musicians also participated in the TG4 Scór Encore TV programme. Through Club/school liaison programme with St. Dallan’s Primary School, a very successful GAP art competition focusing on the history of the GAA was organised and exhibited in the window of Walsh’s Pharmacy.

The year long programme of activities in 2013 to celebrate the 125 Anniversary of the foundation of a GAA club in Warrenpoint in 1888, including the 5 day exhibition in October 2013 was a great success and also provided an opportunity to celebrate achievements and also to enhance the promotion of club games, culture and community outreach activities.

The refurbishment of the clubrooms, including a new weights room, the refurbishment of the 125 Pavillion and the extension of the Strategic Alliance with St. Mark’s High School to 7 years, and support for a new Handball Wall at St. Dallan’s P.S. are further positive developments, since the launch of the five year Club Development Plan as was the provision of new barbeque facilities at the yard, at the clubrooms in Mary Street. Much work has gone into developing a joint venture project with St. Mark’s High School to provide an all weather floodlit GAA 3G pitch. Planning permission has now been secured and funding opportunities are being sought, along with support from Newry & Mourne District Council. In addition, to meet the demand of growing club community, health & well being activities much work has gone into submitting a grant application to the Space and Place Programme in September 2014, to extend the clubrooms in Mary Street to provide modern community hall and meeting / activity room facilities etc. In addition a Dress Up Moygannon Initiative to improve floodlights, dressing rooms and provision of a Hurling Wall is planned.

New community outreach activities led to youth members participating in an 8 week OCN Certificate in Youth and Leadership. Some also participated in a two day residential course in Sure Centre, Fermanagh. In addition a Parents Awareness evening was hosted for tips on how to beat cyber bullying. A new SELB Youth Leadership course exclusively for CPN U-14 boys and girls members is being organised over three weeks commencing 8 October 2014, and a First Aid and Defibrillator Course is planned for Saturday 18 October 2014.

Over the past six months a serious effort has been made to develop our social club, with a reinvigorated Social Committee with a very successful “The Point Does Strictly” event hosted and an effort to promote the club’s social club at the weekend. Sky Sports TV has recently been purchased. These initiatives are primarily targeted at our young adult members and friends.

Page 2 Cumann Pheadair Naofa Implementation Progress Report by Development Officer – October 2014

A major effort continues in promoting effective communications within the club via website, e-news, press notes, text messages, social media and various publications. In the year ending 31 August CPN will issue in excess of 47,000 text messages and the CPN Facebook page has in excess of 730 followers per week and our weekly posts on Facebook reach approximately 3,500 people. In addition our CPN Twitter site has 1,167 followers.

The 5 year Club Development Plan has facilitated the process of taking CPN on a journey, with direction.

However, there is no room for complacency, much work remains to be done. We are not where we want to be, or where the club needs to be. Our present circumstances don’t determine where we can go, they merely determine where we start. We must keep moving forward with positivity, but retain a constant state of nervousness.

The future belongs to those who plan for it. If we do not have a destination, we will never get there. We can analyse the past, but we must design the future. Design means putting things together to deliver a value added solution to meet or exceed expectations. In preparation for our next 5 Year Development Plan, we need to shortly identify suitable people to participate in Focus Groups to assist with the process of developing a vision for a new 5 Year Club Strategic Plan.

Onwards and Upwards, the CPN way.

Feargal McCormack (CLUB DEVELOPMENT OFFICER)
