Aloha and Welcome!

Aloha and a warm welcome to athletes and supporters visiting Maui for the 2015 XTERRA World Championship. Congratulations on qualifying to race at this year’s XTERRA World Champs.

The XTERRA World Championship is celebrating its 20th edition. From its humble beginnings with 123 athletes on the beach at Wailea in 1996, the sport now boasts a global footprint. There are athletes from 43 countries and 43 U.S. states who have earned the right to race for the title of World Champion. Maui’s race course is one of the toughest in the world – you will test your skills and endurance on Hawaii’s legendary beaches and trails.

Festivities leading up to the main event including the costume themed XTERRA 5K/10K Trail Runs and Keiki K on , Saturday, October 31, XTERRA University clinics with the pros, Paul Mitchell hair cut-a-thons for charity, and two star-studded dinners.

About the XTERRA World Championship

The XTERRA World Championship is the grand of the XTERRA World Tour, a global series of off-road triathlons spanning thirty countries and qualifying athletes to race on Maui.

In addition to the main event, we offer all a chance to “Live More” with XTERRA Kapalua 5K/10K Trail Runs, Keiki K and Halloween themed costume contest for runners, XTERRA University “how to” sessions with the pros, a hysterical session with XTERRA Legends, and two star-studded dinners. It’s a celebration not to be missed.

Television coverage

XTERRA’s award-winning television crew will be on hand to catch all the action of the main event. They will produce a 60-minute feature show that will be seen in the U.S.A. on network affiliate stations and FOX Sports Network. It is also carried overseas by ESPN International in Australia and New Zealand, the Caribbean and South America. We are currently working on European coverage. Getting there

Race headquarters is at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. Your destination airport is OGG (Kahului), which is served by major airlines with direct flights from Honolulu, the U.S. mainland, and Canada.

Commuter flights are also available into Kapalua-West Maui Airport (JHM) from Honolulu via Mokulele Air.

Ground transportation

Rental Cars National and Enterprise are the official rental car companies of XTERRA and offer great rates.

All major car rental companies offer rentals at Kahului Airport.

Shuttle Bus from Kahului Airport An alternate to renting a car is Speedi Shuttle. Book in advance of your arrival and departure.

The Kapalua Resort Shuttle The Kapalua Resort Shuttle provides complimentary transportation to and from the Kapalua West Maui Airport and between any two points within Kapalua Resort. Simply call the shuttle service center at 808-665-9110 and a shuttle will be dispatched as soon as possible. Information is here.

Driving to Kapalua

Kapalua is about an hour’s drive from Maui’s main airport in Kahului.

From the airport, follow the signs to Lahaina/Kaanapali. You will be on Highway 380 (Dairy Road) through the town of Kahului and turn left on Highway 30, which takes you to West Maui. Drive 25 miles past Maui’s famed Pali cliffs and scenic beaches, past the old whaling town of Lahaina, and the resort areas of Kaanapali, Kahana, and Napili before entering Kapalua, on Office Road.

Event address

The XTERRA Village is at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, One Ritz-Carlton Drive, Lahaina, HI 96761 and telephone 808-669-6200. Here you’ll find the XTERRA Village with athlete event registration, packet pickup, bike technical support, and expo booths. It is also home to the race start and finish and transition. The start line for the triathlon is at DT Fleming Beach, adjacent to the resort.

Parking

On race day - Saturday and Sunday – Please park in the XTERRA Event lot. Follow

the XTERRA parking signs on Hanoapiilani EVENT Highway past the entrance to Kapalua PARKING Resort (Office Road) and turn left into the parking lot. Ritz Parking The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua has limited parking Office Road and it is used primarily by hotel guests. If you park in the lot, validate your parking ticket at the XTERRA Village, Dinner check-in, or at the bell desk in front of the hotel.

For our dinner functions, parking is in the lot at The Ritz-Carlton, as well as public lots and streets in the area. Please be courteous to our host community by not blocking driveways and not parking in marked No Parking Zones.

Anti-doping policy

XTERRA adheres to the WADA anti-doping policies and procedures at Maui in order to ensure a clean, healthy and fair sporting event for all athletes.

Leave no trace

The XTERRA World Championship team asks that you respect the environment and the trails. Please leave no trace of rubbish on the race course, or in the Race Village and finish area before, during or after the race

Location: XTERRA Village, Salon Ballroom, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. Wednesday, October 28 and Thursday, October 29 9am – 2pm Friday, October 30 9am – 5pm Saturday, October 31 9am – 4pm Note: You will not be allowed to ride the Full Bike Course without your race number. Guests may also ride, but must purchase a $12 USA Triathlon one-day membership at registration and display the practice course number on their bike.

What to bring to Packet Pickup

 Photo ID  USA Triathlon membership card, if applicable  US$12 if you have not purchased a USA Triathlon one-day license online. USA Triathlon membership is mandatory for all athletes.

The Ritz-Carlton is a hotel – not a bike path. Riding bikes on hotel grounds is not allowed. Do not lean your bike on hotel walls – bike racks will be provided at the front and back entry to the XTERRA Village. Thank you for your understanding.

Race pack contents and instructions

 Ankle timing chip – please strap this to your left ankle using the timing strip provided on race day. You will need to make sure you hand your timing tag back to our team at the end of the day to ensure you receive an official time – any chips not returned will incur a $50 replacement fee  Bike plate* – please attach this to your handle bars using the cable ties provided  Runner bib* – please attach this in the FRONT of your body using the safety pins provided OR your race belt  Race number/division tattoos – please apply the night before the race to the UPPER FRONT of both arms and back of your left leg, per the instructions.  Dinner tickets for Night of Champions and Awards Dinners, including those purchased online.  Your official race t-shirt  PowerBar  Paul Mitchell samples  Maui hot/cold pack  Outrigger Resorts tote bag  Memorial bookmark for Steve Tarpinian. Practice course hours

Run: Open sunrise to sunset daily, except Saturday 9am-11am during the XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs. Trails are open to the public - respect the rights of other users.

Bike: The first 3.5 miles and last 5.5 miles (Lower Bowl) are open sunrise to sunset except Saturday, 9-11am.

Access to the FULL BIKE COURSE (Mile 3.5 to Mile 14) is limited to REGISTERED ATHLETES displaying official bike plate only:

Wednesday, 10am-2pm Thursday, 9am-2pm Friday, 9am-2pm Saturday, CLOSED YOU MUST BE SIGNED OUT AND OFF THE COURSE BY 3PM.

Full Bike Course Rules: 1. Official bike plate must be displayed. Pickup your packet first. 2. Guests are allowed and must register and pay US$12 for a one-day license at the XTERRA Village. 3. Sign in and out at the Official Check Point (Mile 3.5/14) 4. Do NOT exit the bike course at any location other than the Official Check Point. 5. The course is private land. Mountain bikers on course outside of official hours are subject to arrest and disqualification from the race.

Important note for all athletes: The blue arrows are for the bike course only. The red arrows are for the run course only.

Practice course aid stations Bring your own hydration when using the practice course. There will be fill/refill water stations:  At the tunnels  Mile 12 on the bike. These aid stations are NOT available on race day.

Aid Stations

Transition - One aid station will be located at transition entry from the swim and transition exit to the run. You are welcome to use this aid station before the race starts. Bike – Two aid stations will serve water and Gatorade Endurance at Mile 6 and Mile 13 Run – Four water stations will serve water, Gatorade Endurance and PowerBar gel. Aid stations are at Mile 1, Mile 2, Mile 3.5, and Mile 5. Finish – Athlete Recovery will offer water, Gatorade Endurance and a variety of post-race recovery foods. Muscle Milk will offer their ice cold protein recovery beverage.

Race Day Important times

You will not be allowed to continue on the run course. An XTERRA official will notify you if you have not met the cut-off  3:30pm – Transition closed and all equipment removed

Tattoo instructions – night before the race

RACE #s and AGE GROUP TATTOOS are REQUIRED FOR ALL ATHLETES.

MARK YOURSELF THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RACE. Apply to CLEAN, DRY skin with NO lotion or sunscreen on it.

TATTOO PLACEMENT: RACE #S: Place on the FRONT of both arms, over bicep muscle. Do not place the side of the arm. ONE AGE DIVISION: Place on the BACK of your LEFT LEG, on the calf muscle.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. TEAR - Tear your division tattoo off the bottom of the sheet. Tear your race number tattoos in half down the center. 2. STICK - Follow the diagram above for location of tattoos. Remove the protective top sheet. Place the ink side to CLEAN and DRY skin, making sure it is right side up. Hold a very wet, folded paper towel over the paper backer of the tattoo for 30 seconds. Make sure it gets wet all the way through. 4. PEEL- Peel the paper backer off skin, leaving race number on your skin. 5. REPEAT- Follow steps 2-4 for your age/division tattoo.

TO REMOVE: Soak the tattoos in baby oil, rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover for 30 seconds, then wipe away. If you make a mistake during application, within 3 minutes you can lift off the tattoo using a few pieces of transparent tape. If you forget to put on your tattoos, visit the body marking station on the lawn between transition and D.T. Fleming Beach on race morning. Apply sunscreen on race morning.

Here is a list of things to bring on Race Day:  Timing chip  Bike with your race # attached to the handlebars  Helmet  Approved speed suit (optional – see list of approved suits)  Goggles  Race clothing including swimwear, bike shorts, top  Race belt or pins for race bib on the run leg  Water bottles  Spare tube/Co2 canister in case of a flat  Chain tool is a good idea  Running shoes  Sunglasses  Hat/Visor (optional for the run)  Sunscreen  Towel (optional)  Wear your race number and division tattoos. Note: You will receive a timing strap and swim cap at the station located between transition and D.T. Fleming Beach.

Baggage Storage – is not available. Leave valuables at home.

Hotel check-out - if you are a guest of The Ritz-Carlton and are leaving the hotel on Sunday, you must check out before the race and the hotel will store your luggage. A hospitality room will be provided where you can shower and change. Ask the front desk for a key.

Mandatory race briefing

Date: Saturday, October 31 Time: 4pm Location: Aloha Garden Ballroom, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.

All XTERRA World Championship participants must attend this briefing. Race staff will run through the ins and outs of the World Championship race course. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. A short race briefing will be held at 8:45am at the race start.

Come early for “Legends Live” at 3pm. You’ll hear tales of the early days from the sports legends. Sure to be hilarious!

Lost and found

On race day, lost and found items will be brought to the transition area. Check with the transition managers. If you have lost keys or a wallet, they will be held at the announcer tent at the finish line.

On Monday, November 2, unclaimed items will be available at the Boardroom from 9am-12pm.

Swim waves/race colors

Each wave has a different swim cap and bib race colour:

 Male pros – blue bib/blue swim cap  Female pros – pink bib/pink swim cap  Age-group men – white bib/white swim cap  Age-group women – yellow bib/yellow swim cap  XTERRA Legends – orange bib/orange swim cap  Organizer’s Challenge – green bib/green swim cap

Transition area

The transitions area will feature separate racks for pros and will be marked for age groups by race number series. XTERRA officials will be at the transitions to direct you to your rack. Please be mindful of others and ensure you allow six bikes per rack.

Access to transition area Athletes only are allowed inside transition. Supporters will need to wait outside. You will be assigned a specific rack marked by race number range. Please leave valuables at home or with your supporters. Do not leave them in transition.

For security of your equipment you will need to show your race number when accessing the transition area. You will be required to show your race number and bike number when entering or exiting with your bike.

Transition will be cleared and NO ACCESS will be granted to the TRANSITION at or after 8:30am.

Remove bike/gear from transition: Announcements will be made when it is possible to pick up your bike/gear from transition. You must show your race number to the officials at the entry to transition. Bikes must be collected from the transition by 3:30pm.

Toilet facilities

Portable toilets will be located on the lawn behind The Beach House.

Results

Provisional results will be published live here, and full results will be posted to xterramaui.com on race evening. Personalized race result cards are distributed in the finish area.

Cancellations or transfer of entry/Race cancellation or amendment

Sorry, refunds or transfer of entries are not available.

The XTERRA World Championship event will be held rain or shine, and only be postponed in extreme circumstances. If weather conditions may potentially cause any postponement or cancellation of the event, Race Organisers will communicate in the days prior to the event via email, and on the website to race participants.

If a decision is to be made on the day of the event, participants may call the event day hotline number (+1-877-751-8880) and announcements will be made at the Race Village. Please note the event will be staged unless extreme weather conditions occur on the day of, or leading up to the event. i.e. not just a bit of rain, or a small swell!!

However please note the Race Organisers reserve the right to cancel the race, an entire leg, or amend the course at any time due to safety concerns or unforeseen circumstances. This may include adverse water conditions, rain or heat issues. Any decision to amend the race format, or cancellation of the event, will only be made where essential and avoided where possible, therefore please respect this decision should this occur.

Technical information

Race Officials are present to ensure that the event is conducted safely and that no athlete gains an advantage by not observing the rules.

 Athletes who wish to take a break and get their breath during the swim leg may hang onto a surfboard, marker buoy or other inanimate object provided that no forward headway is made.  Athletes requiring assistance during the swim leg should raise their hand and a board rider will immediately attend to assist. Any athlete brought to shore by the water rescue team will NOT be allowed to continue the event.  Athletes who quit the race during/after the swim must report their race number to a Race Official.  Athletes must put their helmet on and secure it BEFORE removing their bike from the rack.  No athlete will be permitted to leave the transition area with a helmet that is not properly secured to their head i.e. the strap is loose.  Athletes must have one foot on the ground after the mount line (not on) before mounting their bike or a time penalty will apply.  Athletes must have one foot on the ground before (not on) the dismount line or a time penalty will apply.  Athletes must rack their bike before removing or loosening their helmets or a time penalty will apply.

1. Swim: 1a Wetsuits are not allowed based on typical water temperature around 80 degrees (26.6 Celsius) measured the day prior to the event and confirmed the day of the event. Approved speed suits are allowed. Check here. Pro athletes must have their speed suit approved by race officials at the pro meeting. Unapproved suits will not be permitted.

1b Buoys: any athlete confirmed cutting a buoy will be issued a 2-minute penalty.

1c General Swim: no fins or swimming aids are allowed.

1d Swim Caps: official race swim caps must be worn by all competitors for water safety.

2. Bike: 2a Only mountain bikes are legal for competition. Cyclo-cross bikes are not allowed. No drop handlebars are allowed. No aero bars are allowed. All bikes must have 26”, 27.5” or 29” wheels. Bar extensions or grips off the handlebars may not exceed 5”.

2b Racers shall complete the entire event on the same bicycle upon which the event was begun. You must bring your bike to transition to be allowed to continue.

2c Passing: lapped riders must yield to overtaking riders. Riders should voice the command "track” or ”on your left," when overtaking another. It is the responsibility of the faster rider to overtake safely. Slower riders must yield to the passing rider on the first command. In the event two riders are racing for position, the leading rider does not have to yield his position to the challenging rider. However, a rider may not interfere with or impede another rider's progress. 2d Drafting: Drafting is allowed.

2e General Bike: Bike numbers must be mounted on the handlebars facing forward. Cutting of numbers or altering with sponsor stickers is not allowed. Helmets must be worn at all times. No riding of bikes is allowed in the transition areas.

3. Run: 3a Numbers: Numbers must be worn on the front of the body. Cutting numbers or altering with sponsor stickers is not allowed. There will be a warning for not having your number on the front of your body, second infraction will be a 2-minute penalty. A 2-minute penalty will be assessed for losing your run number.

4. Event General Rules: 4a Ignorance of the rules will not be considered as an excuse. View XTERRA Rules here.

4b It is the racer's responsibility to maintain adequate hydration. The race organiser will provide hydration stations on the run and the bike. There will be two aid stations on the bike and four on the run – see table in next section.

4c Cutting the course: short-cutting and/or cutting trail switchbacks on course is not permitted and may result in disqualification. A rider is required to stay on the designated trail that is marked and or specified as the racecourse. It is the rider's responsibility to know the designated racecourse. Lack of tape or barrier on the course will not be constituted as an excuse for cutting course.

4d Assistance: Limited assistance is allowed from another athlete competing in the same event, or official race staff (officials, race crew, and volunteers). No assistance is allowed from spectators, friends, or family.

Assistance is limited to tools, tubes or any item that would be used to repair a faulty part or damaged bicycle or water, food, or first aid. Changing bikes is not allowed.

As example: A competing athlete is allowed to give another athlete a chain tool or link or a complete chain. A competing athlete can give another athlete a tire patch, tube or complete wheel. But an athlete cannot exchange bikes with another competitor so that the competitor with the broken bike can simply continue without fixing the break.

4e Conduct: Foul riding or running, unsportsmanlike behaviour or the use of profane or abusive language is grounds for warning, relegation, disqualification or fine.

4f Protests: Protests of any nature must be submitted within one hour of the finish time of the person lodging the protest. Protests must be submitted in writing and signed by the accuser. Saying somebody cut the course is not good enough – it must be written and described as accurately as possible. All protests will be investigated. Because of the nature of XTERRA, it is not always possible to see infractions. XTERRA courses are out of sight and marshalled only where necessary. In every case there will need to be verification of the infraction. Officials will not be drawn into a “hear-say” argument.

5. Miscellaneous: No type of sound device is allowed during competition. Examples: no headsets, tape players, CD players, MP3 players or 2-way radios may be worn.

6. Penalties: Penalties will be determined by the severity of the infraction. The minimum penalty is 2-minutes. The maximum penalty is disqualification from the results of the event and/or a loss of prize money.

7. Cut-Off Times: Cut-off times are enforced as stated. Where there are wave starts, the time will be measured from the last start of the race. In some cases the head official may alter the cut-off time.

8. Professional Athletes: Licensed, professional athletes may enter and compete in any World Tour or National Championship race and win prize money. Any person wanting to enter as an elite/professional must furnish proof that they have been accepted as profession al by a recognized multi-sport governing body.

Examples of this are: ITU, ETU, USA Triathlon UCI, USA Cycling (road, cyclocross, track or mountain bike) Any national governing body for triathlon, or any national governing body for cycling.

The athlete must present a current card marked clearly and legibly. Without proof of being licensed as a professional, no athlete may compete in the pro category.

Also permitted to compete as elite/professional are non-licensed Olympic athletes from cycling, swimming, running or skiing. If a non-licensed athlete feels they are qualified, they must make application to the event race director or to the Managing Director ([email protected] ) for permission.

The Race Director may, at his discretion, allow an athlete to compete as an elite/ pro from time to time.

Monetary fines may be levied against pro athletes and shall be paid before the distribution of prize monies or deducted from prize money earned. The annual XTERRA Pro Meeting is Thursday, October 29 at 4pm in the Amphitheater. Pros must bring their speed suit for approval by race officials.

9. ITEMS NOT COVERED and relationship with USA Triathlon

The XTERRA World Championship is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. The published rules and regulations of USA Triathlon are to be considered law except with regard to the specific rules and regulations stated above. In the case of the need for a ruling not covered in XTERRA regulations or USA Triathlon regulations states the decision of the Managing Director will be final.

Medical

XTERRA’s medical team of Maui-based physicians and nurses will be headquartered at the finish area and out on course throughout the race. If you feel unwell at any stage please alert the closest marshal who will arrange for the medical personnel to meet you.

Myxterraphotos.com will be on course taking photos of competitors in action. Photos will be available for viewing and purchase them on their website. Don't for get to check them out after the race!

Sunrise Hawaiian cleansing and rejuvenation ceremony

Date: Friday, October 30 Time: 5:15am Location: The Beach House at the entrance to DT Fleming Beach.

Hawaiian cultural practioner, Clifford Naeole, will lead a special pre-race sunrise cleansing and rejuvenation ceremony, “Hiuwai and E ala E”.

This is your chance to make a fresh start and experience the Hawaii’s rich, ancient culture. All XTERRA athletes, friends and family are welcome. Wear your swim suit. It is not necessary that you fully immerse yourself in the ocean. You may stand at the water’s edge. Towels are provided. Don’t be late – we start promptly.

Halloween costume after party

Time: Immediately following the Awards Dinner (9:30pm or so) Location: XTERRA Athlete Village Parking: If you park in the Ritz lot, VALIDATE YOUR PARKING TICKET at check-in or at the bell desk in front of the hotel prior to departure.

All competitors (including under 21) are welcome at the After Party. Bring your photo ID and wear your orange/yellow wristband for entry.

This is a private party open to competitors and their friends and family only. If your guests did not attend the Awards Dinner, they must show a photo ID and you must accompany them to the party check-in and show your wrist band.

This is the most famous after party in triathlon, and you’ll be amazed at the costumes. Dance the night away and catch the best costumes on stage at midnight. Those wishing to be considered for the grand prize of an XTERRA Stand Up Paddle Board, will parade in front of the judges at 11pm in the back of the room. At midnight, finalists will be presented to the audience for live voting of best in show.
