Let’s therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let’s put on the armour of light. 13:13 Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy. 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts. 14:1 Now accept one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions. 14:2 One man has faith to eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 14:3 Don’t let him who eats despise him who doesn’t eat. Don’t let him who doesn’t eat judge him who eats, for God has accepted him. 14:4 Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.

Gospel - Matt 6:14-21 6:14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 6:15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 6:16 “Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. 6:17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; 6:18 so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. 6:19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; 6:20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

======Reflection of the Week - Great Lent

This is a prayer that we should say often, but especially so every day of Lent

The Prayer of St Ephrem

O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love.

Yea, O Lord and King! Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother; For You are Blessed always now and for ever and ever. Amen

======Words of Wisdom

Let the prayers of those who love you fill each moment with new hope and fill your spirit with new courage for each day

Page 1 Cheese Fare Sunday - FORGIVENESS from Great Lent - Journey to Pascha - by A Schmemann

We have now reached the very last days before Lent begins. This is called “Cheese-fare Sunday” and is also called the “Expulsion of Adam from Paradise of Bliss” This name summarizes the entire preparation for Lent. We know that man was created for paradise, for knowledge of God and communion with Him. Man’s sin has deprived him of that blessed life and his existence on earth is exile.. Christ, the Saviour of the world, opens the door of paradise to everyone who follows Him and the Church by revealing to us the beauty of the Kingdom, makes our life a pilgrimage toward our heavenly fatherland. So at the beginning of Lent, we are like Adam. Lent is the liberation of our enslavement to sin, from the prison of “this world.” And the Gospel lesson of this Sunday (Matt 6:14-21) sets the conditions for that liberation. The first one is fasting - the refusal to accept the desires and urges of our fallen nature as normal, the effort to free ourselves from the dictatorship of flesh and matter over the spirit. To be effective, however, our fast must not be hypocritical, a “showing off.” We must “appear not unto men to fast but to our Father who is in secret.” The second condition is forgiveness - “If you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.” The triumph of sin, the main sin of its rule over the world, is division, opposition, separation, hatred. Therefore the first break through this fortress of sin is forgiveness: the return to unity, solidarity, love. To forgive is to put between me and my “enemy” the radiant forgiveness of God Himself. To forgive is to reject the hopeless “dead-ends” of human relations and to refer them to Christ. Forgiveness is truly a “break though” of the Kingdom into this sinful and fallen world.

The day after Cheese-fare Sunday Lent begins - strict fasting that first day - no meat or dairy products

======Another Chance Another Choice to Start Again

On Sunday night, Mar17th, in our churches we will celebrate forgiveness. This is the beginning of Great Fast (Lent). On Monday morning we start fasting. We will eat very simple meals excluding all dairy and meat. This does not mean that there is nothing to eat. This fast is not scary or difficult because we are so blessed with so much food that we can have a banquet without dairy products and meat. Therefore we have to make a decision to eat simply. To fast is not a punishment but a gift. First of all it is good for our physical health. It is also good for our spiritual health. When we are stuffed with food and perhaps with distractive substances we cannot be ourselves. Usually, it is not easy to discover our innermost self - where God and all goodness dwells. In other words we need to find a way to be connected with our true selves. Some may ask what is the inner self. Very recently I heard a homily that sounded so simple but in fact it was profound. This elderly priest who emanates a gentle and loving spirit, shared some thoughts on the following passage. Jesus said,

“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will loose it, and those who loose their life for my sake will save it.”

The priest explained that we have two selves. One is the good self - the innermost self - where God and all our goodness dwells, and then there is the other self that acts not that good. We are invited by Jesus to lose the destructive self. The more we lose that self that hurts others, does not forgive, destroys life, abuses self, abuses others and their property, the more we live out of the good self. The bad self is our cross but if we follow Jesus, we will save our life because we will be living out of goodness.

Jesus also said that the Kingdom of God is here and now. He also spoke about collecting heavenly treasures now. Thus in the light of the homily it makes a lot of sense how we can already experience heaven. We are God’s wonderful Creation, and we can make proper choices. Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians 3:14- 19 writes,

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Thus, it is quite evident that fasting from food is not the only way to fast but fasting from our disorders and sinful ways is also fasting. However, fasting for the sake of fasting is meaningless unless through fasting, we enter on a path of goodness in every way. One Author wrote a book calling it Mind Fasting, Spirit Feasting. It is not that easy to change, but The Great Fast (Lent) is an invitation and an opportunity to start again, to choose life. Sister Maria Moravski, SSMI

Page 2 His Beatitude Sviatoslav: "At the trial, Christ will not ask which cars we were driving, but will ask “what we did for the least of His" 12.03.13

The Primate of the Ukrainian Greek , His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), on the 10th of March, on the Meat- Fare Sunday, undertook a pastoral visit to the Parish of Saint Ann, which is Vyshneve city, in Kiev region. "Today I felt an obligation to visit you and to present you my respect, my remembrance of you, so as to make you feel yourselves as the loved sons and daughters of your Church," - said the Head of the UGCC to his faithful.

The Divine Liturgy, which was headed by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, took place at the local Civil Registry Office, where during the past six months, the community gathers for prayer, while the issue of a land for the future church is being solved.

In the sermon during the Liturgy, based on the Gospel “The Final Judgment”, the Head of the UGCC urged to remember that Christ comes to us every day "in the face of the most needy person ... And when we serve him, then we serve to God himself”.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav reminded that in one week time the Lent begins. "And today, in this Sunday, which is called" Meat-Fare Sunday", we hear the Gospel, which tells us of the Final Judgment. However, in order to understand that word of God properly, which God speaks to us today, we must, first of all, see Good News in the Gospel"- the preacher invited laymen to think.

The Good News consists, according to him, in the Lord, in compliance with our faith, to be the omnipresent God. God communicates His word through people like we are; however, "into full mode" He will come when the history of this world will come to an end. Then, the Lord will put in front of Him all the people from the beginning to the end of the world. "Christ will not ask us in which flats we were living, in which churches we were praying, which cars were we driving, but will ask what we did for the least of His," - accentuated the Head of the Church.

The Meat-Fare Sunday was proclaimed by the UGCC as the Day of social service and urges all faithful to take care of the people who need help most.

"Today I wanted to honour you - he addressed the parishioners of Vyshneve, - because it is, maybe, one of the most needy communities of our Kiev archdiocese. I want to show you that you are the sons and the daughters of the Great God, to whom He comes every day".

"I wish you all that you have your spiritual eyes widely open and saw the God who approaches you. I want to wish you also to be rich in actions of mercy, because then you will become those whom God will call right to Himself ", - concluded the Primate of the Church.

At the end of the Liturgy, Fr. Volodymyr Malchyn, the administrator of the Parish of Saint Ann, expressed his gratitude to the Head of the UGCC for his visit to Vyshneve and for the support of the local community. "Your presence today among us is a clear evidence that your pastoral care does not ignore even the small communities of our Church, which are under development," - said Fr. Volodymyr.

After the Liturgy, all the faithful moved into the premises of an English school, where every Sunday the catechesis of children and adults is taking place. His Beatitude Sviatoslav talked with the children of the parish and thanked Sister Antonia Kulyk, SSMI, for her faithful catechetical ministry for the youngest. Then, in another room, adult parishioners had the opportunity to talk with the Head of the UGCC. UGCC Department of Information

Photos Peter Valega Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76 has been elected the 266th pope and taken the name Francis, reports the Catholic News Service. (Church Resources)

The election last night in Rome - at 5.05am this morning, Australian Eastern Daylight Time - came on the first full day of the conclave on the conclave's fifth ballot. It was a surprisingly quick conclusion to a conclave that began with many plausible candidates and no clear favourite. The Latin American pope, a Jesuit, was chosen by at least two-thirds of the 115 cardinals from 48 countries, who cast their ballots in secret in the Sistine Chapel. His election was announced in Latin from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica, to a massive crowd in the square below and millions watching around the world.

White smoke poured from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 7.05pm in Rome, signalling that the cardinals had chosen a successor to retired Pope Benedict XVI. At 7.07pm, the bells of St. Peter's Basilica began pealing continuously to confirm the election.

At 8.12pm, French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the senior cardinal in the order of deacons, appeared at the basilica balcony and read out in Latin: "I announce to you a great joy: We have a pope! The most eminent and most reverend lord, Lord Jorge, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, Bergoglio, who has taken for himself the name Francis." The crowd in the square responded with cheers, applause and the waving of national flags. A respected Italian journal said he was the cardinal with the second-highest number of votes on each of the four ballots in the 2005 conclave. ======NEW POPE –FRANCIS 1 RISU correspondent in Rome Oksana Shkodziska took the commentary of Sviatoslav Shevchuk about newly elected I

“I would first like to say that the newly elected Pope Francis was mentored by one of our priests, Stepan Chmil who is now buried in the basilica of St. Sophia in Rome. Today’s Pope, during his time as a student of the Salesian school, awoke many hours before his classmates to concelebrate at our Divine Liturgy with Fr. Stepan. He knows our Tradition very well, as well as our Liturgy.

The last time I had an opportunity to see him was as I was preparing to leave Argentina for . I asked him to bear witness to the process of beatifying Fr. Stepan Chmil, to which, he gladly agreed. The Holy Father very well knows not only of our Church, but also our liturgy, our rites, and our spirituality.

Apart from this, Pope Francis, as archbishop of Buenos Aires, was assigned as ordinary for Eastern Catholics, specifically those who at the time did not have members of their own hierarchy. Our Eparchy in Argentina is, let’s say, suffragan to the Archbishop’s seat of Buenos Aires. In this way, Cardinal Bergoglio, always took care of our Church in Argentina; and as a young , I took my first steps in episcopal ministry under his watchful eyes and help. Because of this, I am positive that the Holy Father will be a great help to our Church, and I expect that great things await our Church with this Pope.

In regards to the personality of the new Holy Father –he is an incredibly modest person. For example, as archbishop of Buenos Aires, he never relied on his own automobile, rather relying on public transportation, always in simple clothing. He mostly stands out in his enormous care for the less-fortunate, visiting the most impoverished neighborhoods. He is a person, I would say, of great pastoral foundation.

As a Jesuit, Pope Francis is an incredibly deep intellectual. I can attest to the fact that his homilies are quite short, sometimes no longer than five or six sentences, but he manages to fill them with such deep meaning, always leaving the faithful in silent contemplation upwards of five-to-seven minutes” Day.
