anti-editorial DAK OUT OF STEP (as well)

In presenting a student newspaper one would expect the editor to act impartially and fairly if an event divides the campus. Mr Kirkpatrick has been incapable of that. The irony is that he even attacked the media for 'their' bias. May I remind Mr Kirkpatrick that: 1) What I have been doing has received a lot of support from students not only at University but throughout the country. 2) His views as editor are generally irrelevant. It is a student newspaper not a David Kirkpatrick newspaper. 3) A newspaper is a vital mode of communication and that as editor he had a duty and obligation to allow me to fairly view my opinion. Instead he has engaged in vicious and unnecessary attacks against not only what I have been doing, but also against myself. Many of his comments have been nothing but downright lies. The tragedy is that Mr Kirkpatrick will be President of AUSA next year. I presume, after observing his editorship this year, he will ignore any student opinion that does not coincide with his own. I congratulate David Faulls on being editor of Craccum next year. After, talking to him, I understand he will attempt to bring Craccum more in line with a fair Student Newspaper, and give the agenda and results of various student meetings - something Craccum just didn't have time for this year because of their preoccupation with the Springbok Tour. And finally, if Mr Davies and Mr Moodie get to read this, I would like to apologise on behalf of most students for our President's most irresponsible letter condemning the police. Mr Davies - our Association is not out of step with the community at large. It is just a few of them who represent US.

Yours sincerely, Brett Buckmaster

P.S. Miss (or whatever) Austin. Your mixed-up reply doesn't warrant my reply. However I hope you won't be too disappointed when I say that I'm not terribly interested in your marital status.

BREAD PREPARING FOR INTERVIEWS Graduates are, by definition, holders of pieces of paper. Any job-seeking graduate can provide an impressively long list of subjects studied for and the results awarded. There is some feeling of ordered security achieved by enclosing a successful university record as the mainstay of your job application. But do you really want employers to hold such a limited view of you? Think of ways to project yourself as a person: - many graduates fail to realise that their involvement in study, social activities, casual & vacation employment and other pursuits provides a wealth of experiences from which to draw evidence of job-related abilities and aptitudes. These activities can provide evidence of initiative, ability to perform routine tasks, ability to fit in with other peoples schedules, ability to plan personal time etc. The experience on sale of having worked on sporting/social/study committees can be cited as developing awareness of the problems of working with people with differing views, co-ordinating activities of a group, administration, making decisions etc. A little forward thinking will pay off - GOOD LUCK and we look forward to seeing you in Milk Bar Careers Week. EDUCATION RUMINATION Have you ever thought about the future? Well, perhaps now is not the time, with exams casting their awesome ABOVE shadow on all your swot notes, as you try to drag up from the depths of your memory just what the lecturer said on June 18th. However, while you're busy casting a wistful glance at the year that was 1981, it is worthwhile having a care for those to j come. Those papers that you have struggled through this year will still be there next year, lurking in the back alleys of the ivory towers, waiting to spring upon yet another unsuspecting generation as they gaily trip along the leafy arcades of this campus. Yes, so innocent are they as they leaf through their Calendars, wide-eyed at the possibilities that are opened before them, oblivious to the dangers that YOU have just experienced. Remember how it was? It's time those days were gone and you can help to do something about it. When the big exam rush is over, take ten minutes to write down your impressions of the papers that you took this year. Talk about things like the staff, the course content, it's presentation, the assessment and your general impressions of the course. Try to give a certain insight to the course that the University Calendar doesn't or couldn't give. This sort of information, if it is carefully considered and well-balanced, can be invaluable to many prospective students. Do your bit to sharpen the teeth of the lambs as they go to next year's slaughter and send it to:

A Disabled Students' Resource Officer will be employed in 1982 to aid the 40 or so disabled students on campus and this includes the permanently and temporarily disabled students. Catering faced a difficult period with rising costs of purchases as well as sharply increasing labour costs and it has been a particularly difficult time for Catering in terms of maintaining a reasonable choice to students. In the face of this the Functions part of catering appeared to do well towards the end of the year after a slow start in the early part of the year. There were major problems with the Student Travel Bureau. Thankfully most of these appear to be sorted out now and a new company - Student Travel Services will be operating and maintaining most of the new services carried out by STB. Sharon Alexander, who worked in the travel service, left early in the first term and received not only AUSA life membership but also life membership of N.Z.U.S.A. for her services to students. The Student Union Development Review Committee has for the first time since 1972 looked at the future development of the University into the 1990's. Quite clearly the projections for 1990 of 15,000 students on the Princes St site means that the catering and Union/Common Room facilities will have to be expanded. A Student Community Service Programme Co-Ordinating Committee was set up to improve the liason with the Labour Dept for this summer and I am pleased to report that our relations with the Labour Dept through Maurice Cervin and Frank Keaton are far better than they were last year and the state of organisation of the Labour Dept is also much improved. Halfway through the year the Association decided to purchase its own computer facility and the projected savings of this purchase will be substantial over the next few years. Harold Phillips joined the Association as the Union Manager, standing in for Jay Clark who went on leave for a year. John Bates replaced Chris Gosling as the Resource Officer whose main areas of activity are in the fields of policy as set down by general meetings. The receptionist, Fiona Cameron, left half way through the year and was replaced by Felicity Hope. For the first time the annual accounts j were presented to the Winter General Meeting in the first term and my thanks to Graham Bowers for making this possible. | I ■! Conclusion VOTE There were many other areas of student/ectivity such as the Aramoana I j Smelter Debate. These will be dealt with in detail by the full report which will be available for student distribution later this year. My thanks to the ANDERSEN staff and especially to The Secretary, Bob Lack, for his hard work FOR throughout the year and to the Executive Committee who have been faced with sometimes intolerable demands by students. The Catering staff by and S ' large have performed extremely well and it is a credit to the Association TAMAKI that the Functions side of catering has grown to such a large extent. His Gil Manly Stuart Bugg Kerry Harrison contributions have almost invariably been printed, often without being corrected as to the facts, and I have attempted to assimilate his arguments but haven't done very well. His successor appears to be even less likely to put up with me, so.... I think if people really care about the content of Craccum they should take steps to change things, from writing articles to simply dropping ideas or tips into the Craccum pigeonhole at Studass. Craccum is an editorial paper, that is, most of the articles are written with the emphasis on analysis and opinions, and not on straight news, and so has the scope to accommodate many things which the straight papers will not print. Students should make use of the fact that Craccum is available to give them a means of getting their views to the wider Student audience, both in Auckland and in the other Campus cities where Craccum is delivered and, by many accounts, avidly read. An excellent example of this is the left-handed issue , the result of a suggestion by the leader of the left-handers*club, or the folk supplement, done by the president of the Folk Club. Craccum is also a paper that depends on its volunteer help. To everyone in the list, thank you for helping get Craccum through its fifty-fifth year. Best of luck to David and William next year. May their Thursdays go well. Cheers, Dak
