www.pilgrimshospices.org Registered charity number: 293968 “From the day that Richard arrived at Pilgrims, he was treated with the utmost care and dignity” Contents by activity

“I first became aware of the exceptional care of Pilgrims Hospices when my best friend, Eve, received support during her illness in 2007. Ever since, I’ve been committed to helping the hospice in any way I can; through volunteering, playing the hospice lottery and attending their many fundraising events. My husband, Richard, would always be Walking and trekking events there, encouraging me to achieve whatever I set my mind to.

Richard was an incredibly good and loving man, and we pages 4 - 9 shared many happy years together with our children living in Ashford. We both loved hockey and would often be down at pitchside supporting each other as we played. When he became ill it was devastating. His condition deteriorated Sue Barrett-Austen, hospice supporter Running events rapidly, meaning that Richard was only in the hospice for 7 days, but that time was so important to us. He was shown such dignity and respect by the incredible staff at Pilgrims pages 10 - 14 - as were the children and I. I was able to still be involved with his care and be there for him as his wife. He told me that he felt safe at the hospice. I can never express my gratitude enough for the care we all received as a family. Cycling events Through my support of Pilgrims, I have met so many wonderful people and achieved more than I ever thought myself capable of. From conquering my fear of skydiving, hiking 25km along the Pilgrims Way and walking barefoot across fire, to completing my very own cycle pages 15 - 16 from Land’s End to in four days! I’ve also taken part in every Cycle Challenge since 2010 with last year’s 125 mile ride being especially poignant for me as it took place on what would have been Richard’s 60th birthday. It was tough but, with the support of friends and Special events family along the way, I was able to cross the finish line having raised much-needed sponsorship for the charity so dear to my heart. pages 17 - 18

Many of us have experienced first-hand what an incredible job the Pilgrims’ nurses and staff do. By volunteering and fundraising for Pilgrims, I know I’m helping to support the Challenges care of other families when they need it the most.

I’d encourage anyone to get involved. There are so page 19 - 20 many things you can do to help and it all makes such a difference.” Sue’s husband, Richard In Memory events Each year Pilgrims supports thousands of local people, and their families, who are living with an incurable illness.
