  • Effectiveness of In-Season Manager Changes in English Premier League Football
Effectiveness of in-season manager changes in English Premier League football Lucas M. Besters*, Jan C. van Ours** and Martin A. van Tuijl*** May 9, 2016 Abstract We analyze the performance effects of in-season manager changes in English Premier League (EPL) football during the seasons 2000/01 – 2014/15. We find that some managerial changes are successful, while others are counterproductive. On average, performance does not improve following a managerial replacement. The successfulness of managerial turnover depends on specific highly unpredictable circumstances, as we illustrate through case-studies. Introduction Football is very popular worldwide. In Europe and Latin-America, football has entertained crowds for more than one century. In other continents, interest has increased in the past decades. Top players now move to the football leagues of Australia, Japan and the United States, and, more recently, also to the league of the People’s Republic of China. Both clubs and national associations employ top-class managers from all around the globe to coach their squads. Furthermore, top clubs have an enormous global fan base. The great interest in football is not restricted to fans seeking entertainment. Professional sports, in general, and professional football, in particular, have proven to be a fruitful soil for scientific research.

The results demonstrate that, on average, a managerial sacking results in a post-announcement day market-adjusted share price rise of 0.3%, whilst a resignation leads to a drop in share price of 1% that continues for a trading month thereafter, cumulating in a negative abnormal return of over 8% from a trading day before the event.

Photograph: 101greatgoals. A COLLECTIVE SIGH was let out when Alan Pardew was appointed manager of West Brom in January, as yet another struggling English team in the Premier League had made another uninspiring appointment. It is no surprise, then, that 3 months later Pardew has been sacked with only one league win to his name, leaving the Baggies 10 points adrift of safety. West Brom are not alone, however, as established middle aged journeyman coaches are littered throughout the wasteland of struggling Premier League sides: David Moyes, Mark Hughes, Paul Lambert, Sam Allardyce, Roy Hodgson – with an average age of 57.8 – represent the glass ceiling for successful young managers looking to climb the ladder in England. When Marco Silva was appointed Hull City manager last season, Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundits Phil Thompson and Paul Merson bemoaned another “foreign manager” gaining a Premier League job at the cost of young English managers, the example given by Merson was Gary Rowett.
