DECREPIT VALVES AND PIPELINES STOP WATER TO KARBONIT SYSTEM

According to Popasnyanskyi Vodokanal (PVK), during the night of 11th / 12th June a discharge valve was broken near Maloryazantsevo on the main pipeline supplying water from the Western Filter Station to the Karbonit system. As a result, water stopped to all settlements in that system both in Government Controlled Areas (GCA…, , Hirske) and in Non Government Controlled Areas (NGCA…Pervomaisk, Stakhanov, , Kirovsk, etc.). The valve was broken as the feed pipe was crushed due to earth movements following heavy rains, with possible earlier frost damage also affecting the situation.

The most affected settlements on the NGCA side of the Line of Conflict are the following settlements: Pervomaisk, Stakhanov, Kirovsk, Brianka. Officially, in these settlements there are currently 116,327 water “accounts” (or 180,000 people according to pre-crisis figures). In GCA areas affected settlements include Zolote (14,572), Hirske (10,131), Popasna (21,917) – around 47,000 people according to pre-crisis figures.

PVK’s specialists are working on restarting water supply rerouting water around the damaged section through a second parallel pipe. PVK hope to restart water at 17:00-18:00 initially to GCA areas, and after checking that the system works they will restart water also to NGCA areas. Water will take some to arrive in NGCA areas as the large diameter pipes will take upwards of 12 hours to fill (water will arrive there tomorrow morning at the earliest).

The WASH Cluster is in touch with PVK and will inform WASH Cluster partners if they request any specific needs.
