THE MOST VERSATILE REGION

Italyʼs northeastern corner is barely mentioned in most guidebooks, but its extraordinary beauty and the relative lack of tourist make it great place to visit. Whether you like snow-capped mountains, warm sandy beaches, lagoons teeming with water birds, remote alpine hamlets, Roman ruins, palatial country villas, rocky coastal cliffs, bustling international seaports or pic- turesque fishing villages, your tastes will be thoroughly satisfied!

FRIULI VENEZIA-GIULIA name recalls to the roots in the pre-Roman and Roman history, in the golden age and fall of Venetian Republic, in the glory and decline of Austrian Hapsburg royal family; and finally, the history of Italy. However due to the political events afterthe second world war, the significant chunk of the territory – the entire provinces on the east and south of Trieste were torn away, and formed a part of Yugoslavia (today, divided between Slov- enia and Croatia.) The geographic position: from the Adriatic Sea to the natural border with the Julian Alps and Dolomites; the political boundary of Austria and Slovenia, keep still a hybrid character and multi-ethnic integrity in this region as throughout centuries… It is a real “Mit- teleuropean” gateway, and perhaps this is the reason why many intellectuals – attracted by the charm of this territory, lived and worked here. To mention most renowned names: James Joyce, lived in Trieste for 12 years, during which he wrote a bulk of Ulysses; Ernest Hemingwayʼs Farewell to Arms, drawn part of its plot from the regionʼs role after WW1, as well as Sigmund Freud and Rainer Maria Rilke, both worked and lived in the city of Trieste. The mixture of Ital- ian, Friulian, Venetian, Istrian, Slovenian, Croatian people has produced a unique tradition of culture, which you can still explore and taste today. THE MOST COLORFUL REGION

The Veneto encompasses a wide range of geographical terrains, from rocky foothills of the Dolo- mites and the Alps to the fertile land of the Po river. Although these territories were loosely linked under the Venetian Republic, the unionʼs influence on the local culture was negligible. The north- ern cities fell under near-by Austria and the regional dialects flourished, today being a testament of the relative isolation in which towns developed. The sense of the local culture and custom remains strong in each town of Veneto may shock visitors, lured to Italyʼs most touristic region in great part by VENICE, the bella of the north.

The variety of the Venetian environment however allows ample space for more traditional tour- ism: in the most northern part are the very famous Dolomites resorts: Cortina dʼAmpezzo, Arabba, Marmolada, Auronzo, Cadore, Alleghe, and Sappada. Famous and busy beaches of Upper Adri- atic Sea include: Bibione, Caorle, Lido di Jesolo, Lido di Venezia, Sottomarina and Albarella. Tourists flock to the Veneto bank of Lake Garda with the picturesque lakeside towns of Lazise, Cisano, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco and Malcesine.

All over the Venetian plain, but especially in the Provinces of Treviso, Padua, Vicenza and Venice, stand numerous remarkable artistic rural constructions, the Ville Venete. There are approximately 5,000 villas, of which 1,400 are declared of historical and monumental interest. The most famous are, without doubt, Andrea Palladioʼs villas and between them his masterpiece, the splendid Villa Rotonda, near Vicenza. Navigation of the canal or `Rivieraʼ del Brenta, between Venice and Padua, on a tourist steam-boat, the `Burchielloʼ, is an original and delightful way to enter the world of the Ville Venete.

Our tours are therefore consisting of prominent sites as lagoon city - Venice, “the Shakespeare of cities - unchallenged, incomparable, and beyond envy”, the Shakespearian city - Verona with the tour of Lake Garda, and on the other side are excursions to touristically less discovered areas, however not less interesting and magical. TRENTINO - ALTO ADIGE

THE SCENIC ALPINE BEAUTY

TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE is truly the alpine region which can satisfy all the imaginable needs of the mountain-loving tourist: it possesses permanent snow, harsh dolomitic mountain passes, green meadows, unpolluted forests, but also gentle sunny slopes covered with vines, evocative medieval-looking villages, together with a large number of castles and towers dominating the valleys or mirrored in the waters of the lakes. This is all evidence of the colorful history of this borderland, which has always marked the point of transition to and from the Latin and Germanic worlds.

The territory of Trentino-Alto Adige formed part of the Austrian Tirol until the end of World War I (1914-1918), when it was ceded to Italy. From 1919 to 1947 the area was known as Venezia Tridentina. In 1948 Trentino-Alto Adige was established as an autonomous region. German- speaking inhabitants residing mainly in the Alto Adige district form a significant proportion of the population, while Trentino in the south is predominantly Italian speaking. Street signs, cuisine, and architecture mingle Austrian and Italian traditions. LOMBARDY (LOMBARDIA)

THE CORNERSTONE OF ITALIAN ECONOMY

Over the centuries Roman emperors, German generals and French kings have vied the control of LOMBARDYʼs bounty. Industry and business have augmented what was ini- tially the agricultural wealth of the region, making Lombardy the cornerstone of Italian economy.

Its northernmost point embraces the magnificent sub-Alpine vistas of Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, but most of Lombardyʼs 9,000 square miles are taken up by the vast Po River Valley, a broad, flat expanse of farmlands punctuated by windbreaks of poplar trees. Shel- ley called this valley “the waveless plain of Lombardy.” In addition to these it conserves a remarkable historical and artistic heritage: from the spectacular prehistoric rock carv- ings of Valcamonica to the the great works of art such as the famous Duomo in Milan. The beauty of their scenery and a mild climate have for centuries made Lakes Como, Iseo, Garda and Maggiore the most popular of holiday choices. In the valleys of the Lombard Alps there are many ski resorts, some of international renown: Bormio, Livigno, Santa Caterina Valfurva, Madesimo. Lombardy has its fair share of renowned thermal spr.ings in charming resorts such as Sirmione, Salice Terme, Boario Terme, San Pellegrino and the Bagni di Bormio. Cosmopolitan Milan, with its international reputation for high style and high finance, looms large foreignerʼs perception of the region, but Lombardy is much more than metropolis with countryside suburbs: Bergamo, Brescia and Mantua... BERGAMO, glimmering in the distance, a medieval city nestles in the hills, with palaces, churches, and a huge stone fortification. Bergamo has two distinct urban centres: Bergamo Alta, the oldest and upper part of the town with a wealth of history and art, stands on a hill, where Ber- gamo Bassa lies, a busy modern industrial and commercial centre. With one glance, visitors observe hundreds of years of heritage in this bustling commercial, artistic, and industrial centre.

PAVIA, survived Attila the Hun’s attack in 452 before gaining the impor- tance as the Lombard capital during 7th-8th cent. Today, prosperous yet peaceful city bustles with student activity, as the 14th-cent. university continues to flourish. Romanesque churches are scattered throughout the historic section and Castello Viscontelo, a colossal medieval castle is set in a beautifully landscaped park. Pavia’s Museo Civico, located here, consist of a picture gallery and an extensive Lombard-Romanesque sculpture collection.

MANTUA (MANTOVA), owes its literary fame to its most famous son: the poet Virgil. Prob- ably of Etruscan origin, it was occupied first by the local Gauls and then by the Romans. After the fall of the Empire, it was subjected to various periods of Barbarian rule, and it was not earlier than after 1328, with Gonzaga rule and Mantua’s small town image changed to the seat of one of the richest and most refined of the Renaissance courts. Evidence of their successful efforts include the impressive churches of San Sebastiano and Sant’Andrea and the remnants of carefully crafted frescoes by Mantegna and Pisanelli. In 1707 Mantua passed to the Hapsburgs who, in 1844, made it one of the linchpins, with Verona, Legnago and Peschiera, of the famous `quadrilateral’ Brescia: Tempio Capitolino defence system. VALLE DʼAOSTA

THE SPECTACULAR SHADOW OF MONT BLANC

In this land of Italian Alps, lush valleys give way to pine forest. The jagged, white peaks above remain snow-laced even in summer. Towns in the valleys are surrounded by forest and terraced vineries, and ski chalets dot the mountains. Sheltered by the soaring peaks of Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and a dozen other giants, Valle dʼAosta has a milder, sunnier climate than the resorts on the other side of the Alps. There is something for everyone in this tiny region, including a hundred castles, a surprising array of Gothic sculptures, spectacular views, glamorous ski resorts, secluded hiking trails, sophis- ticated and hearty food, abundant wildlife, Baroque village churches, and Europeʼs largest casino.

VALLE DʼAOSTA for millennia was one of the main access routes between northern and southern Europe. Hannibal marched his elephants through here in the 3rd century BC. Generations of Roman legions trudged through, building roads and bridges that are still visible today. For centuries, an unending stream of pilgrims trekked through on their way to Rome, braving impossible snows, exhausting altitudes and the exorbitant tolls levied by local lords. More recently, Napoleon and his armies swept through the region on their way to victory at Marengo. The French neighbors have influenced the mixture of spoken language in the region. Today, the most stunning entrance to the region is unques- tionably the international cable car that travels over the mountains from Chamonix, . PIEDMONT (PIEMONTE)

A GOURMANDʼS PARADISE

The fertile PIEDMONT, hence its name, which literally means “foot- hill”. Nestled along the edge of the Alps is not only the source of the mighty Po river, but also has long been a fountainhead of fine food, wine and nobility.

The region falls in the three zones: the alpine, with a string of glamor- ous ski resorts, tiny villages and national parks, the pianura (valley) is of the fecund Po lowland, which encompasses its capital - a renowned industrial center - Turin and the colline, with many isolated castles on gently rolling hills.

PIEDMONT is a gourmandʼs paradise, it produces many of Italyʼs great red wines, along with the best tartufi (white truffles) in the world. Sample them in October, in practically any restaurant or trattoria in the Langhe region, centered around medieval town of Alba. LIGURIA

THE ITALIAN RIVIERA

LIGURIAʼs geographical position, mild climate and pleasant landscapes have made it a successful traditional pole of attraction for national and international seaside tourism since the middle of 18th cent. All along the shore is a virtually uninterrupted string of holiday resorts, with famous names: Bordighera, Sanremo, Alassio, Finale Ligure, Nervi, Portofino, Santa Margherita and Rapallo.

The Ligurians have two names for their boomerang shaped coastline: the half that stretches from France to Genoa is called La Riviera di Ponente meaning “spot on the horizon where the sun sets”, while the half that lies on the Italian peninsula proper, from Genoa to La Spezia is La Riviera di Levante: “where the sun rise”. The authentic character of the region can still be found in the quiet corners of certain seaside villages or in the rare coves still unaltered by the hands of man. THE MOST TASTEFUL REGION

EMILIA-ROMAGNA, once the bread basket of the Roman Empire, today Italyʼs wealthiest wheat and dairy production. It covers silent wetlands of the Po River Delta and fosters finest culinary tradi- tion of peninsula. Gorge yourself on Parmesan cheese and prosciutto, Bolognese fresh pasta and mortadella, Ferrarese salami and grana cheese. Complement these dishes with such regional wines as sparkling red lambrusco from Parma and from Romagna.

Of course, there are other faces of this region: it is a summertime mecca for northern Europeans, who flock to its miles and miles of sandy beaches. If you are looking for an extremely well organized resort area with numerous night clubs and discotheques, the pulsating hub of all these vacation thrills are Rimini, Milano Marittima, Cervia, Cesenatico, Bellaria, Riccione, Cattolica, the Lidi Fer- raresi and Ravennati.

Although the Romans originally settled this region, most visible ruins are remnants of medieval structures. Developed as autonomous communi, the towns later fell under the rule of great Renais- sance families, therefore how personable is each town and city! Bologna, Ferrara, Parma, Modena, Ravenna and Reggio Emilia should be on every visitorʼs itinerary. Outside the towns, the uninter- rupted plains seem to stretch forever, and the illusion of distance is magnified by the cold gray for of winter - replaced in summer by silver haze and stifling heat that make those towns shimmer.

Farther south the region is sharing a common border with the miniscule REPUBLIC OF SAN MARINO, one of the more popular tourist attraction in Italy. It isnʼt Italian. Although it closely resembles the surrounding hill towns, this 26 sq. km patch of turf inhabited by 26.000 people is actually its own nation, complete with UN recognition and brightly garbed “soldiers”. The novelty of this little republicʼs size is the basic of its wildly profitable tourist industry; cobblestone streets are bloated with trinket stands, the Castles balance on the highest peaks, offering spectacular panoramas of the patchwork hills, quilted in yellow and green, that roll to the sea. Every staircase of the castle leads to a higher tower, every precipice to a more dizzying view. EMILIA ROMAGNA - TOURIST SERVICES THE RATES HEREINAFTER ARE QUOTED IN EURO PER PERSON IN DBL HB.

THE REGION OF RAPHAEL

In the MARCHES, green foothills separate the blue shores of the Adri- atic from the Apenine mountains, the quaint hill-towns from umbrella laden beaches. In contrast to seaside resorts lining the coast, inland towns, preserve the regionʼs historical legacy in the architectural and archeological remains of Gauls, Picenes, and Romans. The regionʼs his- tory is punctuated by geniuses as Renaissance Urbinoʼs Raphael and Donato Bramante.

The presence of so many seaside resorts, often rich in artistic attractions, leads one to forget the countless other interesting places. However, towards the hilly inland, lie various little towns as yet undiscovered by mass tourism, in spite of their historical artistic and cultural importance. Indeed, they are well worth including in delightful tours through gentle relaxing scenery.

The Marches have no reason to envy their more famous neighbors; if anything, they can boast of all the same glories, fewer tourists, less crowded restaurants and much lighter traffic, all of which add up to a host of good reasons to discover the region MARCHE - another of Italyʼs lesser-known wonders. UMBRIA

THE GREEN HEART OF ITALY

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life” - St. Francis of Assisi

UMBRIA - a land rich of natural beauty, whose rolling hills are dotted with castles, fortresses and watchtowers, whose well-preserved hill towns produce world-renowned handmade ceramics, whose many mon- asteries were founded by a host of local saints, whose valleys are laced with countless gleaming rivers, and its impressive Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal became the first non-European to defeat the mighty Roman Empire.

Strategically placed between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas, Umbria has long been a cherished and greatly contested prize. Three thousand years ago, Etruscan settled the region, leaving their distinctive mark with burial grounds, necropoli, tombs and ruins. Over the years, rav- enous barbarian hordes, aggressive neighboring Romans, and the med- dlesome papacy, endowed Umbria with some of its most remarkable cultural characteristics of its eclectic cityscape. Another conqueror, Christianity, transformed Umbriaʼs architecture and identity. The great mystical tradition began with St. Benedict, and years later St. Francis, shamed the extravagant church with his humility, earning a reputation for pacifism. The region harbors an artistic tradition that produced Peru- gino and Pinturicchio, and today, the internationally renowned Spoleto Festival and Umbria Jazz Festival. THE ITALIAN DREAM

With rolling hills covered in olive groves and grapevines, bright yellow fields of sun- flowers, and inviting cobblestone street, itʼs hard not to wax poetic. In the late Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance, Tuscany was a center of the arts and of learning. The Tuscan spoken language became the literary language of Italy after Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Boccaccio used it. Notable schools of architecture, sculpture, and painting developed from the 11th cent. in many cities, particularly Florence, Pisa, Siena, and Arezzo. From the 16th cent., however, intellectual and artistic life was almost wholly concentrated in Florence.

TUSCANY, one of the regions in Italy that attract the highest number of tourists, is dotted with charming and often old villages, whose intrinsic merits merge with those of the envi- ronment. Starting from the north peaceful green valleys lie close to the Apennine ridge, towards the east, where lies the wooded Pistoia mountain, with a host of summer holiday centres. The traditional image of Tuscan gentle hilly slopes covered with olive groves and vineyards, must be sought in the heart of the region. Farther on, towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, one enters a protected area in the Maremma Natural Park, including the small coastal Mediterranean scrub, the ideal habitat for an extremely rich and varied fauna. Tourist movement is also linked to the seaside resorts, starting from those of Versilia and espe- cially the Island of Elba, with a jagged coastline, a particularly mild climate. Internation- ally renowned health spas include Montecatini, near Pistoia, and Chianciano.

With so much to see, it is important to plan the stay wisely: Florence, Pisa and Siena, should not be missed, but the smaller towns, such as S. Gimignano and Lucca, deserve to devote at least brief visit too. TUSCANY TOURIST SERVICES THE RATES HEREINAFTER ARE QUOTED IN EURO PER PERSON IN DBL HB. THE CRADLE OF ROMAN CIVILIZATION

Letʼs all go to Rome. Letʼs go to Rome to-night and never come back. Rome is a beautiful city, said the major. - Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

Italyʼs massive capital ironically punctuates the vast expanse of rural Lazio known to the Roman citizens as Latium - Latin expression for “wide land”... Therefore when the teeming masses and speeding motorini overwhelm you, return to the sanctuary of Lazio countryside. The suburban area stretches from the low Tyrrhenian coastline through volcanic mountains to the foothills of the Abruzzese Apennines. Sur- rounding Rome, ancient cities - some predating the eternal city by cen- turies - maintain traces of their original cultures. Romans, Etruscans, and all settled here, and their contests for supremacy over the land make up some of the first pages of Italyʼs recorded history. The entire region is rich in these indelible traces left by ancient civiliza- tions, just as later eras also left signs of their civilizations. The churches of Tuscania, the quarter of S. Pellegrino at Viterbo and the cathedral of Anagni are beautiful examples of medieval architecture. The abbeys of Fossanova and Casamari testify to the French Gothic style that arrived in Italy with the Cistercians. The renaissance finds expression at the hand of Vignola in the gardens of Villa Lante at Bagnaia and at Pala- zzo Farnese of Caprarola. Thereʼs also Frosinone, with its Romanesque churches, the acropolis of Alatri, and the Aniene falls at Tivoli, that complete this framework formed by the most representative spots in the region, where everything exists in the shadow of the capital, Rome - the eternal city. THE TRAVELLERʼS DREAMLAND

An open window of the Mediterranean, a palette of bright, all-Italian colors, where the warmth of the people permeates everything. Since ancient times the extraordinary position of Naples and the gulf of the same name have exerted an enormous fascination, making Campania one of the richest regions in testimonies of the classical world. The archeological complexes of Paestum, Pompei, Ercolano, and Pozzuoli, the Di Baia imperial palazzo, the arch of triumph of Benevento, the majestic cisterns of Bacoli, the bridges of Sessa Aurunca, and the villas of Capri are the vivid testimonies of the prosperous antiquity.

All these first-class cultural testimonies are crowned by the natural beauty. Apart from the charm of Naples and Vesuvius, the region boasts spots as Sorrento, the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri, with the all- pervading mixture of ancient and picturesque enhanced by the luxuriant Mediterranean scrub. The amazing Positano coastline, the white Medi- terranean houses of Amalfi and Ravello with their green, aerial terraces and the architecture reminiscent of ancient relations with the Orient. The inland plain is filled with art cities all housing testimonies to the various civilizations that have dominated this region over the centuries: the Romans, Byzantines, Longobards, Arabs, Normans, Catalans, and Bourbons.

The intrigue of Campania also lies in the regionʼs mythology: the Phlegraen Fields, celebrated by both Homer and Virgil, the Lake Aver- nus, the supposed entrance to Hades and the sirens lured sailors to Sor- rento. Unfortunately, the myths may not adhere to reality, but Campania remains alluring, providing a vast variety of attractions that will entice visitors for years to come. THE DAUGHTER OF HISTORY

Let my song go back to Apulia, the magna Capitana, where my heart lives day and night - the verses of King Re Enzo

APULIA is Italyʼs boot heel, its southeasternmost region. Gateway to and from the East, cohabited with different ethnic groups from the bottom to the top of the scale of civilization, creating a culture that is the daughter of both the mysterious Orient and the pragmatic west at the same time.

It has been conquered by Greeks and later the Romans, controlled the region as a vital stop on the trade route to the East. With the Middle Ages came an onslaught of invaders, who all molded the culture. All its cities, towns, villages and hamlets left us with the conviction that it could never be possible to describe Apulia in full. However, tourism in Apulia is concentrated mainly in its seaside resorts, almost eight hundred kilometers of beaches bathed by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, varied environments with the sandy shores to the cliffs of the Gargano promontory with high, inaccessible rock faces dropping straight down into the sea,

Apulia also means to look at the horizon, within its borders, remote medieval villages, and cone-roofed “trulli” houses dot a cave-ridden plain, and ports have a distinctly Middle Eastern air.

SICILY (SICILIA)

THE LAND OF MIRACLES

Without Sicily, Italy cannot be fully understood. It is here one finds the key to all things. - J.W. GOETHE

SICILY is melting point of culture, science and art, a unique geological garden of Eden. Homer wrote that in Sicily everything grows without being sown and in ancient times the island was considered the land of miracles. Sicilyʼs history is one of chaos, catastrophe, and conquering - Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Aragonese have flowed into this land, overlapping and interpenetrating. Still today the profound traces of all these races can be found in the art, traditions, customs and dialect. The resulting cultural landscape mimics Sicilyʼs physical extremes - Giuseppe Lampedusa, Sicilyʼs prince-turned-writer, described his land as one “which knows no mean between sesuous sag and hellish drought.” The fruits of Sicilyʼs artistic and intellectual heritage range from Selinuteʼs stark ancient gran- deur to Notoʼs Baroque frivolity, from the irrefutable logic of Pythagoras to the wry irrationalities of Pirandello.

Dominated by craggy slopes planted with olive, citrus and almond groves, Sicily with its infinite variety of beautiful spots, is a bottomless treasure trove, a true salve for the sense, where the mildness of the climate offers the perfect corollary of a holiday any time of year. Sicilians are welcoming of foreigners and eager to parade the land they adore. SICILY TOURS THE RATES HEREINAFTER ARE QUOTED IN EURO PER PERSON IN DBL HB.

THE PEARL OF MEDITERRANEAN

“Sardinia escaped the net of European civilization” - D.H. LAWRENCE

Small enough to be classified as an island but big enough to be a universe unto itself, Sardinia lies about 120 miles west of the Italian peninsula. Its coastline is probably Europeʼs most spectacular. Its waters teem with fish and shellfish. Its broad valleys turn into golden oceans of wheat in summer. Its rugged mountains, pocked with caves, are home to large flocks of sheep that feed on pungent wild herbs and produce a cheese your palate will never forget. Nestled into its silent olive groves are some of the continentʼs oldest archeological remains, dating back to 1700 BC. Its people speak a language incomprehensible to all other Italians, celebrate more saintʼs days than anyone else in the nation, and love to dress up in elaborate costumes at the drop of a finely-embroidered hat.

Basically, tourism in Sardinia is linked to its extraordinarily beautiful coastline, with a variety of splen- dors hard to find elsewhere, and not only in the Mediterranean. Pure white sands alternate with tiny hidden coves, sheer cliffs frequently soar above magnificent caves and picturesque rocks rise from a clear sparkling sea facing rugged promontories, eroded by the wind. Sardinia is also for adventures, the inland villages and the archaeological areas, most of them characterized by the presence of the typical truncated round towers called nuraghe (and a symbol of the region), perhaps once castles or forts, built by the Nuragh peoples who came to the fore in 1500-800 BC. Scattered all over the territory and belong- ing to an even earlier period (3000 BC.) are the domus de janas, strange caves dug out of the ground or soft rock, and found in numbers especially at Anghelu Ruiu, near Alghero. The remains of the coastal cities of , near Oristano and Nora, a few kilometers from Pula (Cagliari), date back to Punic and Roman times. Mysterious ruins, wild horses, pink flamingos, and wind-carved rock formation all refreshingly confirm Lawrenceʼs elaboration that Sardinia is “not a bit like the rest of Italy.” SARDINIA TOURS THE RATES HEREINAFTER ARE QUOTED IN EURO PER PERSON IN DBL HB.
