Dear People of Palma,

We are about to enter into some of the best opportunities in a long while to reflect on how fortunate we have been and continue to be as individuals and as a larger group of peoples on this earth. I can think of no other holiday in our present-day society that says as much about us as a nation, as one, as does the time set aside for our celebration of an American Thanksgiving. The message that goes with it is unique to those who are appreciative of the many blessings we have been given by the Almighty. Sure, we have dressed it up with football games, parades, shopping, gigantic servings of turkey and all that goes with a festive meal. Through it all, the message and meaning survives as one for us to embrace and cherish. Some would say we are a flawed society; I say we are a society in flux, always changing, always seeking the higher ground no matter the price. We, each of us, have much for which to be thankful at this time of year as the official holiday season kicks off in three weeks. Would it be possible that we make time for a reflective moment, a prayer if you will, each and every day, especially this month, as we truly have been blessed well beyond the myriads beyond our borders? Bless us, O Lord...

I’d like to ask each member of the Palma family to consider their relationship to this place we all know as Palma. How much do you, either individually or as a family, value the benefits derived from your association with this institution, either as a student, graduate, parent, friend, or vested individual? There has been a long history of local folks stepping up to help promote the Palma cause when needed or, oddly enough, even when not sought but still appreciated. Many have a fondness for Palma and how it has touched either themselves and/or their sons in preparing them for college and beyond, for life. I recall with fondness my first weeks here at Palma some thirty-two years ago when I was encouraged to contact an individual for help with anything that may be needed along the way; he had friends who also would be there to help me, to help Palma. That was more than thirty years ago; others have come forward over the years with the same message — whatever Palma needs, let us know and we’ll be there for Palma.

I mention this now, the Thanksgiving season, as I am keenly aware of the financial restraints we have here at Palma since we are truly a tuition-driven institution that depends upon the collection of tuition, along with donations and gifts over the course of a given year, to pay our bills and be in a position of financial strength in planning for and building our future on this campus. I am also keenly aware of the fact that the local economy is not the economy of schools sixty or so miles north of Salinas. The accompanying list of tuition rates from other selected non-public schools gives vivid evidence that location, location, location is a reality in life. There is a definite “shortfall” in revenue (tuition and donations) when compared to expenses over these past three years that needs to be addressed and is being addressed. The Palma Board of Directors sets the tuition for each year as the Board’s Finance Committee studies the local parameters that can and do influence our financial status and monitors where we are quarterly; those critical parameters include both current enrollment as well as projected enrollment going forward. All Palma families benefit from a planned shortfall for each of the past three school years as the Board knows well the relationship between enrollment and tuition rates; not many schools lower tuition or offer locked-in rates or guarantee a percentage of increase. The Board has wisely decided to use savings, along with tuition and gifts, to cover a planned deficit as we made and continue to make a concerted effort to attract qualified students in greater numbers. What, you may ask, is the current shortfall? That number is $2,650 for this year, per student and the projections going forward look favorable.

The Board of Directors has already pledged that next year’s tuition will not increase more than 2% over this year’s tuition. That gives everyone with a student attending next year a real good number on which to plan. Families will be asked to make a commitment to Palma for the 2019/2020 school year early on in the new calendar year. I know what has been budgeted for financial aid for this year and have a pretty good idea of what that number will be next year. There are solutions in place to keep Palma financially sound going forward for years into the future. Key to those solutions is enrollment growth as additional students generally translate, up to a certain level, to a healthy balance sheet. Our enrollment numbers have increased over each of the past four new school year beginnings. • OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT • 919 Iverson Street Salinas, CA 93901-1816 831.422.6391 F: 831.422.5065 www.palmaschool.org Christian Brothers Institute of Accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges We have been blessed with many families that could and will benefit from making a donation to Palma in the amount of the shortfall to Palma on a regular basis as a tax benefit donation during this calendar year. Palma would certainly benefit as would the donor from such a gift. I know we also have many young men attending Palma from families that are not wealthy; these families and their sons bring much to the total Palma community. Can these families do more with gifts of time and talent for the benefit of our programs? I believe everyone can help, to some extent, at this time of thanking and giving, during this season of Thanksgiving.

Everything we have here at Palma is a gift from someone; some gifts have been large while most have been modest. Everyone, no matter their zip code or family name, benefits from the entire Palma program. Palma has never incurred a debt in any of our various building projects over these past thirty-two years. Not a penny of tuition money, other than for coaches’ salaries, is used for athletic endeavors as our Athletic Council raises funds for uniforms, transportation, officials, sites and venues for all high school and junior high athletic sports over the three seasons of competition. I know of no other school that has an Athletic Council type group that totally dedicates all energies and funding to athletic undertakings; every Palma family benefits from our Athletic Council program whether or not there is an athlete in the family. The Palma Fund is our annual gifting of donations to the school; all gifts to the Palma Fund go into general operations and help keep the shortfall in check. Designated gifts to the school are restricted to the identified target. Examples of restricted gifts are donations to Campus Ministry for the Mexico and/or Peru mission outreaches, contributions to an established scholarship fund, or gifts to a capital campaign.

Palma’s academic and extra-curricular programs (music, mock-trial, student government, etc.) have never been better as our young men are being well prepared for many of the top post-secondary institutions in the country. Palma continues to graduate young men who are well-rounded and aware of the obligations they take on as a Palma grad and are ready to meet those challenges. Look again at the accompanying list of other school tuition rates; very few can come close to offering the quality education Palma offers. Few, if any, see the progression of graduates to post-secondary places of education as does Palma.

Palma does have future growth plans and projects lined-up, shovel-ready as is often said. Two projects ready to go are a new weight- room/training facility while the other is a modernization of our athletic fields into an all-season surface for baseball, junior high soccer, lacrosse, and younger level football. Other future plans envision a field-house facility that would provide a year-round practice area for a large variety of athletic and health-related undertakings. These projects and other plans depend totally upon gifts from individuals and families, not from tuition dollars.

On a topic that is very current, there has never been a better time for fathers to have meaningful talks and discussions with their son(s) regarding relationships with young ladies. Knowing all the parameters that are in place today and having the ability to think through all possibilities prior to encounters, dates, and relationships could prove to be extremely timely not to mention valuable in a whole host of ways. Fathers need to have those discussions with their sons.

There are but two dates remaining for President Circle meetings, all on Thursdays, each starting at 4:30 P.M. and being brought to closure at 5:30 P.M.: November 15 and December 13. If you have a question, suggestion, great thought, on anything beyond the day-to-day running of the school, please feel welcome to stop in, if ever so briefly, over that one-hour window.

Be assured of my prayers for each and all of the Palma community for a meaningful Thanksgiving in three weeks. If you are in a position to be of assistance to Palma as I outlined above, please feel free to call upon me at any time. Your consideration is much appreciated. Thank you and best wishes for a terrific Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Brother Patrick D. Dunne, C.F.C. President 2018-2019 School Year Tuition Rates for Selected Non-Public High Schools

November, American Pride, and Gratitude November 1, 2018

Dear People of Palma,

November is commonly noted for our national holiday of gratitude that we celebrate as Thanksgiving. We welcome the opportunity to break from work to visit with families and indulge in a delicious feast of family recipes and traditional turkey and fixings. On Veterans’ Day, we honor the men and women of our military who have sacrificed much to preserve this and many other privileges we have come to appreciate as rights. During election years, it is often in November when we exercise our privileged right to vote for those in public office. November is a good month to be American.

American Catholic schools have an impressive record of civil servitude that extends far beyond leadership in the Church. Research has proven that when compared to public school graduates, Catholic school graduates are three times more likely to give of their time and money, and twice more likely to give of their talent through volunteer efforts for the common good. Other studies have demonstrated that an overwhelming majority of American leaders in public health, the corporate world, politics and more have had extensive formation and education in Catholic schools.

There are many explanations for Catholic school graduates’ propensity for leadership in the Church and society. At , especially, educating our students is a collective responsibility, and opportunities for Christian charity and civil servitude abound. The young men of Palma are challenged, motivated, and intellectually prepared here at Palma to be gifts of love and self to a world that needs them more than ever.

I am genuinely moved on a regular basis by our students, their families, our alumni, teachers and coaches. Miracles are happening all the time here at school and through Palma School to the community beyond. We are busy doing great works, and we recognize that the holidays can be very difficult for people who do NOT have some of the most basic securities to which we are all truly entitled: food, shelter, clothing, even fellowship. This is a good time to reach out to one another in gratitude. And November is a fitting time to reflect on our Palma legacy in the community with an attitude of gratitude.

This November of Thanksgiving and through the subsequent holiday season, I pray that our students and so many more young men and women beyond Palma experience the wonder of their worth; that they may know with confidence that they truly matter! I pray that we, the adults in their lives, model this with a deep sense of gratitude for their place in our world, and for our place in service to them and the mentoring of them. I am reminded that life brings no guarantees to wait for tomorrow to be grateful. So with this in mind I say thank you, Palma Family! The holidays will present a myriad of opportunities for us to give to others in need.

In the footsteps of our saintly founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, let us commit ourselves to service simply because it is the right thing to do. Have a blessed and Spirit-filled Thanksgiving holiday! Go Chieftains!

Yours in Blessed Edmund Rice,

NOVEMBER Take your time on this assignment. Be open. Be reflective. Find your individual voice and express it honestly. 2018 Do’s and Don’ts for your application • Do use unique personal anecdotes. You want your application to stand out! • Don’t procrastinate. Last minute, rushed applications won’t reflect your best work. • Do get to know your universities and what they stand for before filling out your applications. • Do follow any directions given in your application, such as adhering to word or page limits. Read the question thoroughly and don’t elicit information that was not requested. • Don’t lie. Period. Any fabricated grades or omitted grades, test scores, leadership positions – admission counselors will find out and it will certainly jeopardize your acceptance and scholarships.
