Northamptonshire Archaeological Society PRESIDENT His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester

VICE-PRESIDENTS A E Brown MA PhD FSA C T P Woodfield Dip Arch RIBA MIFA Martin Tingle BA PhD MCIfA

The Northamptonshire Archaeological Society was formed in 1974 in succession to the Northamptonshire Federation of Archaeological Societies. Between 1966 and 1973 the federation produced an annual Bulletin, with a paper cover, providing summaries of fieldwork carried out in the county and the occasional slightly longer article. The last of these, volume 8, was given the title Northamptonshire Archaeology. The following year, 1974, the newly formed Northamptonshire Archaeological Society retained the new title when it upgraded the bulletins to a full journal, with a card cover, volume 9, which contained longer reports in addition to the traditional format of the annual summaries. The society has continued to publish the journal in most years since then, producing 32 journals in 45 years (up to volume 40, 2019). Through the run of journals up to volume 40, there have been 221 main articles and 149 notes.

In addition, in 2004 the society published an overview of the archaeology of the county, The Archaeology of Northamptonshire, edited by Martin Tingle, and in 2010 the unique contribution of Dennis Jackson to both the archaeology of the county and to the society was marked by publishing his autobiography Dennis Jackson: A Northamptonshire Archaeologist.

An index to the journal was published in 1987 covering volume 9, 1974 to volume 21, 1986-7, and this was issued to all members. The illustration of the mirror used for the present index has been taken from the artwork prepared for the cover of that first index. This new contents and place-name index covers all the bulletins and journals up to volume 40, 2019. It has been compiled from three principle sources: the journals themselves, the online contents lists and abstracts for the more recent volumes maintained on the society website, and the online bibliographic listings on the British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography (BIAB).
