Happy Belated 4th of July

IEQF ALES Contest Report By Thom Martin

For someone new to the NWSS scene, the third annual Spokane Classic ALES contest was interesting and educational. Pilot count was a little low. I think there were 14 pilots on Saturday and 13 on Sunday. There were guys from WA, Montana, Idaho, and two from Arizona. John Ellingson and I were the only flyers from western WA. John and I have flown ALES for some time now but it has always been in comfortable confines of our local club (Thurston County Miniature Aircraft Assn in Littlerock, WA. The group that we met in Spokane was very nice bunch of guys, not much different from our troops with the exception that they were almost all flying higher-end aircraft. The majority of the planes were either molded planes like Xplorers or big wood-and-carbon planes like Pulsars.

The flying site is in farm country about 10 miles south of Spokane. It's a nice site with only one issue from a glider standpoint. There is a fairly busy state highway along one side of the flying site and this can cause problems when chasing thermals in certain prevailing winds. The CD had to remind people several times over the weekend that flying over the road is not allowed. It's easy to get over the roadway when you're concentrating on following lift. No one was actually penalized and everyone cleared away from the road with little complaint.

Saturday was windy - my wind meter said 9-14 mph all day gusting 18-20. There was lift coming through but you could not make two circles in the good air without blowing downwind too far. Most people on Saturday would fly out and try to engage lift near the bottom of big dark clouds that were blowing through the area. I think we flew one round of 7:00 minutes, then one 10:00 minute round and then the rest of the day was set back to 7:00 because of the wind. Even 7:00 was not a given with the winds blowing as they were.

Landings were tough on Saturday. I added about 8 ounces of lead ballast to my Xplorer in an effort to battle the winds. We flew 8 rounds and I only scored landing points three times. Everyone had the same sort of problems. I think that, out of more than 100 flights, only about 27 scored landing points. Most of the flying was surfing the breeze upwind until some good air came through (usually under those dark clouds) and then you would circle, s-turn, or zigzag to get as much of the lift out of that good air before it was gone downwind

Sunday was much calmer with varying thermal conditions. All 6 heats were 10:00 minutes. In some heats, the lift was small and spotty, requiring lots of hunting and tight circling to stay in small thermals. In the next heat, you would see people zoom up to 2,000 feet in huge lift. More than once, I saw people way up high at the two minute mark who could not make it to 10 minutes because the lift would disappear - to be replaced with massive sink! With the calmer winds, it was much easier to circle downwind in thermals (unless the thermal headed towards the highway).

I watched one guy who had a good launch, thermalled up strongly for a few minutes, sank down just as quickly to 60 feet, and hung out below 100 feet, using every tiny bit of lift that came through, for the last 4 minutes of the heat - and he made his 10:00 time. A few of his turns would have had a wingtip at less than 20 feet above the ground. It was interesting and impressive to see him flying that low, so calmly, for that long.

In the next to the last heat of the entire weekend, I was matched up against Art Boysen, who was right behind me in the overall weekend scoring. I found lift west of the field and followed it downwind. He found lift right over our heads and was circling downwind with it. About halfway through the round, we ended up in the same bunch of air at the north end of the field. At about 6:00, I departed to go find air that was showing alongside the field again while he stayed downwind. At 8:00, my thermal had carried me right back down to where he was, although I was now a bit higher. At 9:00, he was still downwind and I headed back up to set up a landing approach. Our final approaches were right alongside each other for the last 15 seconds. He beat me on time by a one second and had 10 points more on his landing.

I finished first on Saturday with Art in second. I finished second on Sunday with Art in first. On combined points for the weekend, I finished ahead of Art by only 15 points - out of 14,000! This man-on-man style competition is really fun! That one heat between Art and I had all the guys in the pits watching because they knew the whole weekend could be decided in that heat! In an interesting twist, because the new Pacific NW ALES Champ Series uses purely normalized scores, and because of the number of rounds flown, Mr. Art Boysen is currently the leader of The Series. Congrats to Art and Well Done!

All in all, it was a fun weekend. We met some new flying buddies, experienced a new flying site, and brought home a trophy. Now, I just need to catch up on my naps. Thanks to CD Jim Frahm for a terrific event!

BTW... There are 4 more weekend events coming up in the next couple of months. If you are interested in coming to any of them, I would recommend it. You can learn a lot by hanging out with experienced glider-guiders for a couple of days.

The overall results are: 1st Thomas Martin (Xplorer F5J) 14,084 2nd Art Boysen (Euphoria) 14,069 3rd Greg Douglas (Xplorer F5J) 12,845 4th Dave Thielman (Pulsar Pro 4 meter) 12,725 5th Anne Stimers (Xplorer F5J) 12,342 6th Philip Brister (???) 11,868 7th Steve Adams (????) 11,613 8th Lee Urbaniak (Original AVA) 10,941 9th John Boughton (MAXA/Woodie) 10,042 10th Frank Smith (AVA) 9,423

"Sailplanes and Power Lines do not Mix." By Anonymous

Here is what it looks like when a glider loses the battle with a power line. The re-kitting process begins. Oh the fun.  Another “Sparky Incident”

The only thing that survived was the motor, speed control, and battery. Could have been worse but no down power line or fire resulted. Just a very toasted glider and not even sunny side up. Or was it?

Hot in Paradise By Steve Adams

The first couple of contests in eastern Washington and Idaho were cool, windy and wet. Thankfully, by June 4th the warmth and good weather returned to the Paradise field.

Like usual, the morning thermals were hard to find but by the afternoon they were huge and we often had to work to keep the planes in sight. It was in the 90’s and the flights were limited to 7 minutes because nobody was used to the heat this early in the season. If you made it to 7 minutes you could probably stay up all day.

Arthur supplied the main excitement for the day by flying just a bit too close to the high power lines at the north end of the field. With a bright flash and a puff of smoke his RES was reduced to a limp lump of carbon fiber and fell from the sky…

Shavings from the Editors Desk By Ye Olde Newsletter Editor Well here it is July and we are well into the 2016 flying season. Me thinks that Mother Nature has not being nice so far. Too much wind and rain. But there is hope for the remained of the season. Please note that the SASS Contest on July 15/17 will be a Windows type of contest in lieu of MOM. Just a reminder that Nominations are now open for the NWSS Board of Directors and the Cliff Mink Service Award. So please get those board nominations in, make sure that the person you nominate is willing to serve on the board for three years, and please send to NWSS Secretary Art Boysen, email address is [email protected]. Directors whose term ends this year are, Art Boysen, Richard Van Dijk and Dave Johnson. Many thanks this month to Thom Martin, Steve Adams and Don Stewart for their contest reports. I hope that we will have some more to report on in the August Edition. Wanted a NWSS Newsletter Editor starting in 2017, please contact the NWSS board if you are interested in this position. Editor’s Note: I have a thumb drive with all of the past Newsletters that I have done, so you will have that to start with. Don’t forget that the 40th annual NWSS Tournament is coming up in September. Also the USA F3J needs your support, check out the following website for more info on how you can help. http://www.teamusaf3j.com/ That’s it for this month. Fair Winds and Strong Lift

Fry Fly 2016

CD Don Stewart Report

For this years’ Fry Fly on Saturday, wind and rain, cold and nasty was the entrée. But unbelievably Sunday was absolutely gorgeous. The only wind encountered was thermal breezes and the temps were around 75 degrees, absolutely beautiful.

We managed to get in 7 rounds, starting with a 5, then moving into a 7 for about three rounds. Then conditions seemed to warrant a 9-minute round. Somehow time stops when you are puckered up and not breathing regularly.

Seeing how the day was progressing, I called for an 8-minute round, as the lift seemed to start to slack. I have no idea why but I managed to fly a perfect round, 8:00:09 and 100 landing, the second in my career.

Magic was happening on all fronts. Lee Urbaniak flew his electric RES into a landing then, at the last minute, decided to work a bubble of lift at the very end of the landing zone. He managed to gain another minute and a half without gaining 10 feet. It was amazing to watch. Lee is truly an expert pilot.

Anne Stimers was on top of her game and proceeded to show us how it is done. My only question is why do we let these kids come and play with us seasoned pilots? It’s embarrassing. All said and done, here are the Stats.

RES. Lee 1st Bill Mcvay 2nd

Competitor: Tim Lynch 1st Glen Reiboldt 2nd

Expert Open: Lee Urbaniak 1st: 6839 points Anne Stimers 2nd: 6759 points Don Stewart 3rd: 6594 points Jim Frahm 4th: 6519 points John Burke 5th: 6213 points Rex Grace 6th: 5378 points Thermal Wizard: Anne Stimers with at time of 49:59

It was an amazing day and fun was had by all. I just wish Saturday was just as beautiful. Oh well, we take what we can get.
