Tschaikowski von seinem Bruder Modest auf das neue Drama des damals erfolgreichen Autors Schpaschinski aufmerksam gemacht; eine Liebesszene sei darin, die sich zur Vertonung gut eigne. Tschaikowsk interessierte sich dann aber mehr für die beiden weiblichen Hauptfiguren als für die Liebesszene. Er bat den Autor das Stück zu einem Libretto umzugestalten. Schpaschinskis Text geriet aber zu lang, so dass sich das Ringen u eine aufführbare Fassung zwei Jahre hinzog. Am 1. November 1887 kam Charodeyka im kaiserlichen Mariinski-Theate in St. Petersburg zur Uraufführung. Nastasja, genannt Kuma, führt ein Gasthaus am Fluss. In der toleranten Atmosphäre, die sie dort geschaffen hat, finden auch politisch und gesellschaftlich Geächtete Zuflucht. Kuma wird viel umworben, schenkt aber keinem ihre Gunst. Nastasja hatte eigentlich alle Männer abgewiesen, bis sie einmal zufällig Prinz Juri sah. Auf ihn warf sie all ihre Liebe, doch ihre Gefühle behielt sie geheim. Statt den liberalen Club am Fluss zu schließen, verliebt sich Fürst Kurtjatjew, Juris Vater, in Nastasja. Bald darauf wird er von den liberalen Gedanken, die dort kursieren, infiziert. Fürstin und Sohnemann finden das abscheulich - sicher aus unterschiedlichen Gründen. Als Juri auf Geheiß seiner Mutter Nastasja töten will, gesteht diese ihm ihre Liebe und überzeugt ihn von ihrer Unschuld. Juri beginnt, Nastasjas Liebe zu erwidern. Zu spät: Die Fürstin hat Nastasja schon vergiftet. Sie stirbt in Juris Armen. Der Grausamkeit nicht genug - die Fürstin wirft Nastasjas Leichnam in den Fluss. Auf der Suche nach Nastasja trifft Fürst Kurtjatjew auf seinen Sohn. Vor Eifersucht ermordet er Juri und verfällt dem Wahnsinn. Die Fürstin bleibt allein zurück. Nizhny Novgorod and its vicinity, the last quarter of the 15th century The action takes place at the last quarter of the 15th century at a tavern and brothel near Nizhny Novgorod. Nastasia (Kuma), the charming owner of the inn, has made herself an enemy in rejecting the devious Mamyrov, the right-hand man of the local governor Nikita Danilovich Kurliatev. He spreads the gossip that Nastasia is an enchantress, and every man whom she meets falls for her. Yuri, Nikita's son, begins to frequent the inn, as does his father, who falls madly in love with Nastasia (without any success), who threatens her that he will reach his goal by whatever means. Mamyrov confronts Nikita's wife, Evpraksia, with the truth, while her son – not yet personally involved with Nastasia – swears to avenge his mother. While confronting Nastasia he learns that it is he whom she loves. They both plan to flee during the night not knowing that, by now, Mamyrov has worked out an elaborate plot to wreak his revenge on Nastasia as well as on Nikita and his family with devastating effect. Akt 1 - Auf dem Platz von einem Dorf. Einige Mädchen schmücken eine Eiche und singen Lieder. Der Bauer Thibaut ist durch ihre Unachtsamkeit zu einer Zeit so schrecklich für das Land verärgert. Er ist bekannt für ihre Tochter besorgt, die 17 Jahre alt Jeanne d'Arc will mit Raimond zu heiraten, um sie weg von der Gefahr zu bewegen, aber sie fühlt sich an wie eine Bestellung aus, die für andere Dinge verwendet. Die Glocken verkünden den Fall von Paris und die Belagerung von Orleans, die wahrscheinlich zu erliegen ist. Die verzweifelten Menschen beten für das Heil und Giovanna Inspiration prophezeit mit dem nahenden Sieg über den Feind. Auch der Auftritt des Ritters Lauret, tödlich im Kampf verwundet, noch die Abfahrt des tapferer Ritter Dunois, der das Gericht, um die Kämpfer kommen Sie zu verlassen entscheidet, nicht den König bewegen sich von seiner Entscheidung, den Rückzug zu speichern. Plötzlich tritt der Erzbischof, begleitet von Höflingen und gemeine Volk, um den König der Flucht der Briten, die Französisch Sieg und der "glorreichen girl", die die Soldaten in den entscheidenden Kampf hochgeladen erzählen. Joan erzählt dem Publikum staunen Vision, die er hatte, mit dem Befehl, den Kampf gegen die fremden Eindringlinge zu führen. Die Abstimmung, ihre Jungfräulichkeit zu bewahren war die Bedingung für den Sieg. Im Auftrag von König Joan er verantwortlich für die Truppen gestellt wird. Akt 3 1. Szene - dichter Wald. Joan greift ein Duell der burgundischen Ritter Lionel, der verwundet wurde und verlor seinen Helm. Durch das schöne Gesicht des jungen Mannes verführt, hat sie ihn nicht töten. Lionel ist durch die Großzügigkeit von Joan, der von einem neuen Gefühl erschüttert berührt wird, die Möglichkeit in Betracht zu brechen sein Gelübde. Lionel beschließt, aus dem Französisch und reichte seinem Schwert Dunois, der gerade angekommen ist, zu wechseln, aber ihre Herzen schon mit Liebe für Joan brennt. 2. Szene - Das Quadrat der Kathedrale von Reims. Das Volk preist den Gewinner König und Joan. Sein Vater Thibaut ist sehr beunruhigt, weil er glaubt, dass alle Großtaten von Joan stammen aus dem Teufel und haben beschlossen, die Seele seiner Tochter zu retten, auch wenn es bedeutet, sein Leben zu opfern. Gerade als der König proklamiert Retter des Vaterlandes und Giovanna, um einen Altar zu errichten, klagt Thibaut ihr vor, in der Gemeinschaft mit dem Bösen, und bittet sie, öffentlich zu zeigen, seine Reinheit. Gefragt, ob er als rein oder unrein, aber Joan nicht reagiert, von der Liebe zu Lionel gequält. Dunois versucht, sie zu schützen, aber die Leute, die von dem Donner der einem Sturm erschreckt, die Rejekte aus Angst vor Strafe Gottes. Joan austreibt Lionel, der für sie umsonst sprechen möchte. Akt 4 1. Szene - dichter Wald. Jeanne d'Arc ist allein, verlassen und von jedermann, Opfer seiner Qualen verflucht. Despite its largely enthusiastic reception in musical circles, it almost immediately became the target of negative criticism by Russian authors who viewed the opera as a trivial and overly romanticized embarrassment to Pushkin’s novel. Criticism of the opera often revolves around the fact that the novel’s most significant feature—its self-conscious narrator—does not exist in the opera, thus completely changing one of the story’s defining attributes. Scholarship in defense of the opera began to appear in abundance during the 1990s with the work of Alexander Poznansky, Caryl Emerson, Byron Nelson, and Richard Taruskin. These authors have all sought to demonstrate that the opera stands as more than a work of overly personalized emotionalism. In my thesis I review the relationship between the novel and the opera in greater depth by explaining what distinguishes the two works from each other, but also by looking further into the argument that Tchaikovsky’s music represents the novel well by cleverly incorporating ironic elements as a means of capturing the literary narrator’s sardonic voice.

    Tchaikovsky’s SEPT 30, OCT 4, 6, 8 In-Depth Guide by Stu Lewis INTRODUCTION: “THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING” Russian opera has always been a “hard sell” for American opera companies. The most obvious reason is the Russian language itself, which lacks the lyricism of French or Italian. It can be hard to find American or Western European singers who are comfortable singing in Russian, since most opera students focus on French, Italian, and German, in addition to their native languages. Yet this cannot be the only reason. For the first forty years of its existence, Lyric Opera of Kansas City performed all of its repertoire in English—yet no Russian operas were produced during that period. This year’s “Eugene Onegin” is only the second Russian opera production. The other one? Also “Eugene Onegin.” Moreover, the reasons for the dearth of Russian opera in the U.S. cannot be political. Russian concertos, ballets, and symphonies are a familiar part of the American musical scene; even Soviet-era composers such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich are widely admired. The shining exception to our neglect of Russian opera is Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.” Of course, the general popularity of Tchaikovsky’s music is one reason for its success, though none of the composer’s other operas have approached the status of this one. What is it that makes this opera stand out? One reason is that many Russian operas were written in the “grand opera” tradition that is currently out of vogue. Tchaikovsky himself was concerned at the lack of action in the story, so much so that he hesitated to call it an opera, preferring the term “lyrical scenes.” Moreover, it is a love story without a love duet, and in the end the hero and heroine part quietly.

    Tchaikovsky CD 1 1 Orchestrion It wasn’t unusual, in the middle of the 19th century, to hear sounds like that coming from the drawing rooms of comfortable, middle-class families. The Orchestrion, one of the first and grandest of mass-produced mechanical music-makers, was one of the precursors of the 20th century gramophone. It brought music into homes where otherwise it might never have been heard, except through the stumbling fingers of children, enduring, or in some cases actually enjoying, their obligatory half-hour of practice time. In most families the Orchestrion was a source of pleasure. But in one Russian household, it seems to have been rather more. It afforded a small boy named Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky some of his earliest glimpses into a world, and a language, which was to become (in more senses then one), his lifeline. One evening his French governess, Fanny Dürbach, went into the nursery and found the tiny child sitting up in bed, crying. ‘What’s the matter?’ she asked – and his answer surprised her. ‘This music’ he wailed, ‘this music!’ She listened. The house was quiet. ‘No. It’s here,’ cried the boy – he pointed to his head. ‘It’s here, and I can’t make it go away. It won’t leave me.’ And of course it never did. ‘His sensitivity knew no bounds and so one had to deal with him very carefully. Every little trifle could upset or wound him. He was a child of glass. As for reproofs and admonitions (with him there could be no question of punishments), what would have been water off a duck’s back to other children affected him deeply, and if the degree of severity was increased only the slightest, it would upset him alarmingly.’ Despite his outwardly happy appearance, peace of mind is something Tchaikovsky rarely knew, from childhood to his dying day.

    BEAUTY AND THE BEAST CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: BELLE (Stage Age: 18-30) Belle is the original fairy tale heroine–kind, gentle, and beautiful–but with an important 21st Century twist. She is a strong, intelligent, spirited and independent young woman. Belle is the moral conscience of the story, elevated by her thoughts and deeds. The maturity and depth of her character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit within The Beast, and to love him for it. This role requires a very strong singer who portrays innocence with her singing and speaking voice. MezzoSoprano: Low A-High F THE BEAST (Stage Age: 21-35) The Beast’s tortured soul is evident for all to see. He is paying the ultimate price for a moment of mean-spiritedness, and wishes beyond wishing that he could rectify his mistake. There is anger and menace in The Beast’s appearance and behavior, but increasingly we see his soft and endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It becomes clear that he is a loving, feeling, human being trapped within a hideous creature’s body. This role requires a very strong singer, and the actor must have a strong speaking voice and stage presence. Baritone: A–High F GASTON (Stage Age: 21-35) Gaston is the absolute antithesis of The Beast. Although he is physically handsome, he is shallow, completely self-centered, not very bright, and thrives on attention. However, when his ego is bruised he becomes a very dangerous foe for The Beast, Belle and Maurice. This role requires a strong singer and character actor who moves well.

In the summer of 2018, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Tomsky (Queen of the Spades) under the baton of Mariss Jansons, followed by Count Luna (Il trovatore) at the Berlin State Opera, Jago (Otello) at the Vienna State Opera, and his role debut as Scarpia (Tosca) at the Malmö opera. He also made his house debut at the Munich State Opera with Count Luna and will appear for the first time at the Frankfurt Opera in the role of Siriex (Fedore) in January 2021, as well as with the Berlin Philharmonic and Kyrill Petrenko as Lanceotto Malatesta in Rachmaninov’s Francesca da Rimini. His house debut at the Paris Opera was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since 2004, baritone Vladislav Sulimsky has been a member of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he has sung countless parts including the title roles in Eugen Onegin and Gianni Schicchi, Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta), Kovalev (The Nose), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Silvio (Pagliacci), Andrei Bolkonsky (War and Peace), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Renato (Un ballo in maschera) and Ford (Falstaff). In 2010 Sulimsky sang Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Mariinsky alongside Nathalie Dessay and Belcore in L’elisir d´amore with Anna Netrebko as Adina, followed by Giorgio Germont (La Traviata) and Robert in Iolanta. A frequent guest at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, he has performed Prince Kurlyatev in Enchantress by Tchaikovsky and his parade title role Eugen Onegin.
