Erev Shabbos Parashas Chayei Sara 5771

Dear Parents,

Despite the current economic difficulties, our generation has been blessed (and challenged) with unprecedented wealth. Expectations have risen to the point where most people feel that they can purchase whatever it is they need and it is not neces- sary or appropriate to wear hand-me-down clothing, drive older cars, deprive oneself of frequent opportunities to eat out or to replace aging appliances before they actually give out. While we may feel poor, that’s because we focus on what we don’t have, rather than appreciating what we do have, which is unprecedented in history.

If we feel the pressure of wanting more, we are not alone. In portraying Avraham Avinu at the end of his life, (Bereishis 25:8) the describes him as “Zakein V’Soveya”, mature and content. The RAMBAN points out that the Torah wants to teach us the praises of Tzaddikim like Avraham for possessing the Midah of being Someach B’Chelko – satisfied with their portion. This is quite surprising, for on the one hand, what’s the big `deal?’ – Avraham was fabulously wealthy and he enjoyed respect, power and prestige. On the other hand, why is this worthy of mentioning – Avraham was a spiritual person, totally immersed in matters of heaven, so how much of an attraction would material wealth be to an Avraham Avinu? The truth is, as is written in the name of our Rosh Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Henoch Leibowitz, zt’l, by Rabbi Elyakim Rosenblatt, Shlita, that even an Avraham Avinu needed to exert effort to escape the lure of materialism. Had he not grown to become a Tzaddik, he would have suc- cumbed to the desire for wealth. Chazal tell us: (Koheles Rabbah 1:34) Mi She’Yesh Lo Mana, Rotzeh Masayim – he who has one hundred, desires two hundred. No one is immune.

If this is true of adults, how much more so is it a challenge for children, who are by nature more self centered. In our wish to keep our children feeling comfortable, do we maintain the proper balance between feeling deprived and being spoiled? Are we getting our children accustomed to a standard of living that is unnecessarily too lavish and luxurious? The world’s financial situation should give us pause in our assumption that our current state of affluence will continue forever. Are we preparing our children for the possibility that they may need to use their pencils and markers for an entire school year? Do they feel any need to hold onto sweaters and lunchboxes, or will Mommy simply buy a replacement before tomorrow? Are they taught not to waste food or other items, and to not expect instantaneous gratification of their desires?

These attitudes and bad habits in childhood breed desire for things that may not be attainable. And if the situation will BE’H re- vert back to prosperity, will their life be one of unrelenting pursuit of new things, new comforts, new toys? How do we and our children escape the clutches of this powerful drive to want more and more? We need to teach our children that everything comes from Hashem, and He provides us with our needs. There’s no need to go overboard in pursuit of money and material things, we have what we need to fulfill our mission on this earth, to serve Hashem with balance and purpose.

Let us pray for Hashem’s continuing bounty, and show we deserve His blessings by preparing ourselves and our children to appreciate and show respect to what we have and to deal with the material world responsibly and with moderation.

Best wishes for a wonderful, satisfying Shabbos,

Rabbi Kalman Baumann Principal

PARENTING CLASS 10:30-12:00

Dear Parents,

Please join us at the Book Fair! The Scholastic Book Fair begins Tuesday, November 16 and runs through Monday, November 22 from 9:00am – 4:00pm in the Toras Emes Multi Purpose Room.

Come join us for cake and coffee when you volunteer at the Book Fair, please call Esta Rosenberg 786-390-2767 or fill out the attached form.

Here’s how the Book Fair works: During the week, each child will visit the Book Fair twice with his/her class, the first time to make a wish list to bring home for parents and the second time to make purchases. You and your family are invited to come during our open hours and during your child’s class visit. We have books for all ages, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the various selections and reasonable prices. Not to mention the benefit to our school from the profits of your purchases.

Besides bringing affordable, appropriate books to our school, a goal of our Book Fair is to increase class- room libraries. One way is with the Classroom Wish List, which allows you to donate books to your child’s classroom in your family’s name. Be sure to look for the Classroom Wish List display when you arrive. Do- nating books to the classroom and school library is even easier with the new Gift Certificate program, see gift certificates attached.

Participating with our 1 for Books program helps the students in our school. All loose change and dollars donated through this program is used to buy books for needy students in our school. Simply fill out an at- tached slip and send it in with your loose change or dollars.

Sincerely, Rachel F. Breier, Racheli Grossman, and Esta Rosenberg Book Fair Chairpersons

New Opportunity; Clean out your bookshelves and donate your gently used books. All donated book will be sold in our dollar section at 100% profit to the PTA.

P.S. For your convenience, our Book Fair accepts credit cards! Discover, Visa, MasterCard, American Ex- press, and secured debit cards (with Visa or MasterCard logos on them).
