President’s Report

Season 2000 has been a very successful year for the Penrith Rams, with the First Grade side reaching the finals for the first time since 1994, when we lost the Elimination Final to Wollongong by a single point. Our Under 18 side also reached the finals in the Division 2 competition. I would like to congratulate Michael Walker and his coaching staff Peter O’Neil and Cliff Bradley for their tireless efforts in producing the results that the club achieved. Well done. My thanks go out to the committee for their support and their time consuming efforts that they have put in to ensure the success of the club. I would like to make special mention to vice-president Stuart Fletcher who took over the running of the canteen, which is vital revenue to the club. Thanks Stuart. To our Hart Medallist (Best and Fairest in the Under 18 Division 2 competition) David Bradley – from the committee, players and supporters, congratulations. I have found my time as president both rewarding and fulfilling. To everyone in the club – good luck, and I hope to see you around the club in 2001. Garry Ayres

Editor’s Notes

A season of many highlights but not, unfortunately the ultimate success. The performance of the club on and off the field in 2000 should give everyone involved a lot of heart, motivation and confidence for the future. Two sides into the finals for the first time since 1993. First grade beat Manly and Uni of NSW for the first time ever, beat Sydney Uni for the first time since 1983 and defeated the previously unbeaten Macquarie Uni. The side stood up, gained and deserved respect from clubs which are used to beating us and beating us often. Winning seven out of the last nine games and making the finals was a terrific achievement. Reserve grade had little success on the field but stuck together as a side, battled the season out, gave support to the First and Under 18 grades and all those concerned should be proud of their efforts. We were never short of players as we have been in past seasons and every side that played us knew they had a real battle on their hands. The Under 18’s had a difficult year, being short of player numbers on match day quite regularly. However, they never forfeited a game (unlike several supposedly more prestigious clubs in Sydney) and held on to make the finals. Once in the finals, they gave their all and were only 8 points away from making the grand final. In my opinion, they were a terrific bunch of young men, doing themselves and the club proud at all times. Individually, the club had an association Best and Fairest winner in David Bradley, who won the Hart Medal for the Under 18 Division 2 grade. David fully deserved his win after an outstanding season. Mark Egan and Jason Ware ran 3 rd and equal 4th respectively in the Snow Medal. At the club level, we had a couple of hundred gamers (Scott and Jason Bradley) and the Bradleys also featured in the 100 goalers (Jason and Glenn). With Cliff and David, we had 5 Bradleys play for the club in 2000!!! A further 13 players made their 50 th game, showing players are happy with the club and its environment. This is a great sign for the future. A special mention also goes to club stalwart Alan Stewart, who was awarded the Australian Sports Medal recently in recognition of his major contributions to this club – Alan was the backbone of the club in the 80’s and it would be great to see him around the club in some capacity in 2001. A great development was the number of people who were prepared to help out on game days, doing canteen duties, boundary, goal, timekeeping, team managing, running, medical duties, etc, etc. The more people who help the easier it is on everybody and the club spirit generated as a result I believe played a role in the increased on-field success. Our trainer, Cyndi Marrett, did her usual marvellous job and Maria Romiti came back on board late in the season to assist with the Under 18’s. Thankyous should go out to all the people who sponsored the club in 2000 (listed on page 8). Without this support the club would not survive. A number of other thankyous should be recorded – to the staff at the AFL (NSW/ACT) Commission, the local press (the Weekender, the Press and of late the Penrith Star) for running our stories, to Jamie Doran and Anthony Harris for doing their weekly articles, to the Penrith City Council, to Queenie and Horse for organizing the trip away, to our patron Jackie Kelly for her continued support, to Nigel Cunningham for his development work in the area, to Peter Shaw, Kevin McGee, Andrew Seckold and everyone else involved in the local junior administration and to many, many others. A special acknowledgement should go to the coaching staff of Michael Walker, Peter O’Neil and Cliff Bradley, who did an outstanding job in the 2001 season. On a personal note, it was so satisfying to see the club do so well on the field after the work put into the club by all the various people over recent years. I would like to pay my personal tribute to Michael Walker. This was his 19 th year with the club and he has been through thick and thin with the Rams. He manages to stay fresh, motivated and is Penrith through and through. He has coached, played, “committeed”, been president, SFA President, captain, rep player, etc, etc. He has also been a good friend to me through difficult times. He is the sort of person of which a club such as ours should be proud. The committee did a fantastic job this year and instead of leaning towards criticism, people should be thankful that we had people on board doing the job. This year we have an almost brand new committee and it is imperative that everyone involved in the club supports and gets behind them and assists whenever and wherever possible. We have proved this year what a fully united club can do. The outgoing committee, consisting of Garry Ayres, Stu Fletcher, Mark Sullivan, Rob Watkins, Stuart Ayres, Mark Steunenberg and Brett Walsh deserve everyone’s thanks and it is hoped all of these committee members who are retiring will certainly be around the club to contribute in some way in 2001. All the award winners on Presentation Night deserve congratulations. They are listed on page 4 of this publication. Of special interest should be the fact that our First and Reserve Grade Best and Fairest winners are both graduates of the Under 18’s side. This is a vindication of the vision shown by both Joe Bradley in getting a side together in 1996 and the club in reviving the concept in 1998. Talent coming through the junior ranks is certainly the foundation of this club’s future success. From my point of view, I will be around the club a lot less next year as I hope to commence writing a book on the history of the club. This will take a lot of work and will necessitate me divorcing myself from the day to day operations of the club. All the best to everyone for 2001. Mark Spooner

Life Membership

The Penrith club in 2000 has bestowed its highest honour of life membership Jason Ware. “Warey” started his footy with the Mt Druitt club and in the early 80’s transferred to the newly formed Penrith junior club. He made his senior debut with the Rams in 1985, playing a total of 24 games that year, and showed signs of things to come when he won the Reserve Grade goalkicking award (with the modest tally of 10 goals!!) and tied as runner up for that grade’s B & F award. After starting the 1986 season with the Rams, his family moved to Bundaberg, where he played with the local club. Jason joined the Army in 1987 and, despite being stationed in Sydney, was unable to play much footy as he was away so often. For this reason, he missed all of the 1987 and 1989 seasons and lost any chance of playing in 1990 when he injured his knee. He resumed playing fulltime with Penrith in 1991, after leaving the Army, the year the all- conquering Rams went through the season undefeated. Since then, Jason has been a regular fixture in the first grade side. The only break he took was in 1998, when he went to try his luck with Baulkham Hills in the Sydney Football League before he got too old! He had a successful season in the Falcons’ first grade side before returning to his old stamping ground in 1999. He has now played 190 games and, luck permitting, should hit his 200th in 2001 – only the fourth Ram to do so. With his brother Clinton, the Wares have played over 300 games for the club, a record only challenged by the Bradley brothers (who should hit their combined 300th in the first half of next year). Jason’s list of achievements in his time at the Penrith club is a long and impressive one. He is a premiership player, multiple First Grade Best and Fairest winner, Association representative player, was club captain for four seasons and also served on the committee for four years. The Penrith Australian Football Club is proud to recognize the contributions and achievements of Jason Ware by awarding him life membership.

Alan Stewart ––– Australian Sports Medal

Life member of the senior and junior Australian Football Clubs, Alan Stewart, was recently recognized for his contributions to both clubs, and the sport of Aussie Rules in general, when he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal. The medal was a one off national recognition of the efforts of individuals in promoting and developing sport at the local level. Alan grew up in a soccer area and was only introduced to Australian Football during his time with the army in the 1960’s. He moved to Penrith in the mid 70’s and became involved with the game when a junior club was formed in the area in 1980. When the

Penrith senior club was also formed in 1981 Alan devoted his energies there until 1992. During that time, Alan was one of a number of individuals who formed the backbone of the club, includ ing several very difficult years from 1983 – 1985 when the Rams first fielded two (first and reserve grade) sides. Clubs with lesser people at the helm may not have made it through such times. In 1992, Alan went back to the junior club and served there, and in recent years has been back at the senior Rams. He has performed any number of roles in both clubs and, until last year was the person who linemarked Greygums Oval every week. Everyone involved with the game in Penrith I am sure would like to congratulate Alan on this well deserved recognition. His list of achievements with and contributions to the senior club appears below. 1981: Manager (2nd Grade) 1982: Manager (2nd Grade); Manager (Under 20 Grade); Treasurer; Clubman of the Year 1983: Manager (1st Grade); Manager (2nd Grade); Secretary; Treasurer 1984: Manager (1st Grade); Secretary; Treasurer; Delegate to Juniors; SDFA Delegate; Clubman of the Year 1985: Manager (1st Grade); Manager (2nd Grade);

Club History

The Penrith club originated in 1981 from an idea principally from Keith Claxton, a prominent SFL player then residing in the Penrith area. In its first two years the Rams fielded a reserve grade side, playing before Hawkesbury’s first grade matches and using the Saints’ grounds at Deerubbun Park and Colbee Park (McGrath’s Hill). In 1981, the Rams bowed out in the preliminary final, but had individual honour winners in Keith Claxton (McFarlane Medal) and Peter Traeger (SDFA Reserve Grade Leading Goalkicker). Next season, the club went one better, making the Grand Final only to lose in a spiteful match to Sydney Uni. Again Keith Claxton won the McFarlane Medal and Tom Hall won the SDFA Reserve Grade goalkicking with 126 goals, the only time that a Rams player has kicked 100 goals in a season. 1982 also saw the first Rams under-age senior side fielded, the Under 20’s, who made the first semi-final.

In 1983, the Rams expanded to first and reserve grade sides and also moved to its own home ground at Sales Park, Luddenham. The years 1983 to 1985 were lean ones for the club, fielding two quality sides often proving difficult. Things lifted in 1986, with the first grade finishing a very respectable sixth. In the same year the Rams kicked their record score, 62.22 (394) against a hapless Camden at Sales Park.

In 1987, Penrith again moved grounds, this time to its current location at Greygums Reserve. The SDFA was split into two divisions, renamed the Sydney Football League with Penrith playing in the second division. This revitalised the club’s fortunes, with first grade making the grand final only to lose to Liverpool. Graeme Tuckwell came second in the SFL Div 2 Reserve Grade Best and Fairest voting. Stephen Cox established the club individual goalkicking record this year as well, booting 20 goals against Blacktown. In 1988, the Rams also made the Grand Final only to again lose to Liverpool.

1989 to 1991 saw only a first grade competition, and these were the most productive years in the club’s history. Going into the 1989 Grand Final against Auburn as underdogs, the Rams easily won their first premiership at Wagener Oval. To cap off a great year, club stalwart Geoff Eldering won the Apted Medal. The Under 20’s side in 1989 (a composite of Penrith and Blacktown players) also featured the competition’s leading goalkicker in Phil Lane.

In 1990, the first grade side made the Preliminary Final, losing a game they should have won against Bargo due to inaccurate kicking. Penrith fielded an Under 20’s side in its own right in 1990, the going as far as the first semi-final. The following year (1991, in the now SFA 2 comp) was the most dominant in the club’s history, with the first grade side going through undefeated. The nearest thing to a loss was a draw against Bankstown. In the finals, the side kicked 25.12 (162) in the second semi-final and 22.17 (149) in the Grand Final, both times against Hawkesbury. Gavin Chalker kicked eight and nine goals respectively in these two games.

1992 saw the reintroduction of first and reserve grades, with both Penrith sides making and losing the Grand Final (against Bankstown in first and Hawkesbury in second). In Reserve Grade, Dave Robinson took out the SFA Div 2 goalkicking award and Graeme Tuckwell was joint winner of the Armstrong Medal. In 1993, first grade soared into the Grand Final only to lose against Hawkesbury, while Reserve Grade bowed out in the preliminary final.

After seven years of playing in lower divisions, Sydney football was restructured in 1994 and Penrith was readmitted to the second Sydney division (after the Premier Sydney competition), named the Sydney Football Association. The Rams made fifth spot, and played off in the elimination final against Wollongong. After trailing all day, the Rams got up to draw at full-time, only to lose by a single point in extra time. Captain-coach Dave Armstrong equalled the club finals goalkicking record by booting nine goals in this game, and capped off a great year by winning the SFA’s Snow Medal. Early in the season the first grade side kicked the club’s second highest score, 50.33 (333), against Blacktown at Greygums Reserve.

1995 was a lean year for the club in both grades, then in 1996 we saw the reintroduction of the Under 18’s under the guidance of Joe Bradley. His side finished fifth, with the first and reserve grade sides performing moderately on the field, about on par with the efforts of 1995.

In 1997, the Under 18’s did not field a side, and the senior sides struggled despite their best efforts. In 1998 the Under 18’s were reintroduced and finished sixth, one place out of the finals. Glenn Bradley booted 70 goals to finish second in the SFL Under 18 goalkicking, booting individual hauls of 12 and 11 goals. The senior sides showed promising results, probably the highlight being the club’s first-ever win over Wollongong in both grades at Greygums Reserve. The highlights of 1999 and 2000 are contained in this publication.

At a representative level, the club has had many players represent the various Sydney leagues over the years, commencing in 1988 and as recently as 1999. At the playing level, three players have played over 200 games, Michael Walker, Geoff Eldering and Alan Luke. The club has also had a number of players receive association awards, and Alan Stewart this year received an Australian Sports Medal for his club service. Details of all these achievements can be found elsewhere in this publication.

The club is very proud of its history and is hoping to hold a reunion in the year 2001. A book on the club’s history is planned, and an honour board has been recently completed.

Travis was born on 25th October 1971. He played for the Nepean Colts Under 20s in 1989 and 1990 and First Grade for the Penrith club in 1989 and 1991. In his short career he won a number of awards, most notably the 1990 Armstrong Medal, which was awarded to the Sydn ey Football League Under 20’s (Division 2) Best and Fairest Player. Travis died on 28th July 1991 as a result of a car accident. He was returning home with friends after playing football for Penrith. Travis was the beloved son of Judy Crust. The Penrith A.F.C’s First Grade ‘Most Consistent Player’ Award is our perpetual dedication to Travis’s memory.

Presentation Night Report

The Rams’ 20 th annual presentation night was held on Saturday, 30th September in the Leonay Room of our major sponsor, the Emu Plains Sporting and Recreation Club. Despite being a long weekend and the last Saturday of the Olympic Games, the function was well attended, with over 100 people being present. This particular night was booked two years ago, so we could get a Saturday night function, instead of our recent history of Fridays. Special guests included directors of the Emu Plains Sporting Club, Lou Gal and Pam Karbe and past president Andy Heaton, Finance and Admin Manager of the AFL (NSW/ACT) Mr Peter Hiscock and wife Margaret, Life Members David Nolan (and wife Kim) and Alan Stewart, Mr Peter Shaw (and wife Cheryl) of the Penrith Valley Junior Association, Mr Greg Davies, Deputy Mayor of Penrith and past Penrith First Grade coach Mr David Harrison. Also attending were Mr and Mrs Vince Guymer, as sponsors and presenters of the Diane Guymer Memorial Trophy. Club Patron, the Hon Jackie Kelly, was an apology due to her commitments with the Olympics. Emcee for the night was club secretary Mark Sullivan and the highly impressive Powerpoint display was once again put together by the master of such things, Michael Walker, who attended in his capacity as First Grade coach and Life Member and came up with the popular concept of using the Academy Awards style presentation. With Mick stepping down from the First Grade coaching position for 2001, a special tribute was made in recognition of his contributions to the club since 1981. The night had many highlights as usual. Peter Hiscock re-presented the Hart Medal to David Bradley. Greg Masters equaled the club record by becoming only the second person to win the Pisspot Trophy twice and the inaugural Apprentice (or Encouragement) Pisspot Trophy went to a highly promising up and coming Ram in Nathan Pritchard. Life membership was bestowed on Jason Ware, much deserved after a long and rich career with club. Appreciation awards went to Keelie Smith for her assistance in the canteen, Stuart Fletcher for running the canteen and to Dave Nolan for his regular appearance at home games to assist with timekeeping and other duties. All in all it was another splendid Rams spectacular, much enjoyed by those there. Thanks to the committee for their work in organizing the night and to all those who attended.

First Grade Coach’s Report

After a slow start to the season I would have to say it most the most enjoyable second half of a season that I have ever been involved with at this club. I must admit that when Jason Boneham broke his ankle at Macquarie University in round 3 it seemed to indicate that this was going to be a difficult year. We really did seem to struggle through the first rounds and this set back seemed to be the last straw. However, the guys did stick together on the field and we were always competitive in the first round - winning four games and being unlucky in a couple of others. The second round was a complete turnaround. Helped by the return of Nathan Hearnes, Glen Bradley and Clarry Dent the side lifted demonstrably. I don't think anyone thought that we would only lose two games in the second round or that we would be the first team to beat the undefeated Macquarie University. Obviously, the last game against Holroyd Blacktown and the semi final against Wollongng were not the best way to end the season. But we can take heart from the fact that we are finally playing the sort of football required to be a truly competitive team in this competition. We have continually improved each year and with a bit more commitment I could see us going further next year. What was most pleasing was the reaction of the people around the club who put in so much effort. The success we had in the second half of the season was due reward for the efforts of a lot of people - committee, support staff, match committee etc. I personally would like to thank everyone that has assisted me this season. Peter O'Neill and Cliff Bradley have been great support. Cliff never hesitated to assist me even though he had his hands full with the under 18s. I particularly want to thank the guys who accepted the job as runner on match days - I know I can be cranky and I appreciate your support. Finally, there were some memorable achievements - beating Manly and Sydney Uni on their own ground for the first time ever and of course the thrilling win over Macquarie University at home. However, I think the biggest achievement was playing a good competitive standard of football and enjoying it. We have the basis of a good solid team and I have no doubt we can continue to improve if we stick together. Congratulations to everyone involved in our year 2000 campaign. A year when we finally showed what this club is capable of. Our challenge now is to continue to improve and ultimately win the premiership. Michael Walker

Whilst some in the club may have expected an automatic win, a hard fought game is always on the cards against the Saints. And that is exactly how it was. The Rams opened a good lead at quarter-time but from there on could not bury the opposition, partly because of solid rain in the first term which saw the conditions become slippery and difficult for all players. It was a good workout for a side which needed it. Dave Dunn made a good debut as captain, new player Glen Leaf did well until injured and Mark Egan stepped up well to first grade. Coach's Award: David Dunn Sat 8/4/00 vs Southern Sharks Penrith 4.3 5.4 8.5 12.8 (80) Goals: J Ware 2, S Stubbs 2, G Masters 2, J McCann 2, C Folkes, M Egan, D Dunn, D Cummings at Greygums Oval (R2) Sth Sharks 1.2 3.7 8.9 11.12 (78) Best: M Egan, R Allen, S Stubbs, J Ware, D Dunn, M Brazier, T Trigg, D Perry The Rams opened with four goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and it looked a matter of by how much. Then, inexplicably, they could only score one more goal by half-time and the opposition were back in the game. From there on it was a real dog-fight, with neither side being able to gain the ascendancy. A late 50 metre penalty and a goal to Mark Egan saw the Rams hit the front and retain the lead until the final siren. Egan's running game was an inspiration to a Penrith side which did not play well for most of the game. The defence did a sterling job, with Brazier, Trigg, Ward and Perry repelling repeated attacks. Coach's Award: Mark Egan Achievement: David Cummings - 50th game Sat 15/4/00 vs Macquarie Uni Mac Uni 5.2 8.4 12.9 17.15 (117) Goals: J Boneham, S Allen, J Ware, G Bongiorno, M Egan, S Stubbs, C Folkes at Macquarie Uni (R3) Penrith 2.4 6.7 6.7 7.11 (53) Best: J McCann, C Nuske, D Perry, S Allen, T Trigg, J Ware The return of Jason Boneham was a boost to the side. After kicking one goal and being awarded a kick to line up his second, a badly broken ankle ruined the full-forward's season. Still, the Rams fought back well in the second quarter and were well in the game at half-time. They would have been even closer if not for a goal being disallowed in dubious circumstances. The third quarter turned the game, the Rams being unable to score despite repeated moves forward. The final score was not a true reflection of a very tough game. John McCann won the Coach's Award for his tireless efforts in the ruck all day. Coach's Award: John McCann Sat 22/4/00 vs Sydney Uni Syd Uni 5.5 6.8 8.12 11.16 (82) Goals: M Brazier 5, J Ware 2, C O'Brien, G Masters, S Stubbs at Greygums Oval (R4) Penrith 1.1 5.3 9.3 10.6 (66) Best: J Ware, S De Souza, G Masters, R Watkins, T Trigg, C O'Brien, C Marathakis With both sides depleted because of Easter, it was a good chance for Penrith to knock off one of the top sides in the competition. Uni opened a five goal at quarter time with the aid of the breeze. But the Rams were back in it a quarter later and got back to within three points at the last break. The side finally started to play the football of which they are capable. With the breeze in the final term they were in with a real chance. But some costly errors gave the opposition the initiative, and in turn the match. Still, it showed that Penrith is nearly there in terms of being a top grade side - but for the lack of confidence. Coach's Award: Jason Ware Sat 29/4/00 vs Wollongong W'gong 7.1 9.1 14.7 21.9 (135) Goals: J McCann 4, S Stubbs, S Bradley, C O'Brien, J Ware at Greygums Oval (R5) Penrith 2.2 7.6 7.8 8.10 (58) Best: C Marathakis, G Leaf, C Nuske, S Allen, G Masters, R Murie Probably the most disappointing performance since Round 1, 1999 and a sad way to celebrate Jason Ware's 150th First Grade game. Wollongong, admitt- edly with the use of the wind, cut Penrith to pieces with their running game in the first term. The Rams hit back in the second and the game looked even at half-time. From there on it was a poor display, however, Penrith's errrors in basic football proving fatal. For example, the disposal by hand and foot was atrocious, time and time again the ball being delivered directly to their opponents. For the amount of good footballers in the side it was a poor indictment. Coach's Award: Chris Marathakis Achievements: Jason Ware - 150th 1st Gr game Sat 6/5/00 vs South-West Sydney Penrith 3.1 4.5 7.9 11.11 (77) Goals: J Ware 2, C Nuske 2, J Ward, C Folkes, J Purcell, R Murie, G Masters, S Stubbs, M Egan at Rosedale Oval (R6) S-W Syd 5.2 8.7 8.11 9.13 (67) Best: R Watkins, S Allen, C Marathakis, G Masters, J McCann, N Hearnes "Chuck" Watkins' 100th 1st grade game turned into a celebration for the Rams with a remarkable victory. Into the wind in the first term Penrith kept with their opposition but could only kick one further goal to turn in at half-time 26 points down. The side clawed their way back into the game in the third term and could have been well in front if not for continued poor finishing. Still, they maintained the momentum in a thrilling final term to win by 10 points. If the side could play with this much spirit every week they would be hard to beat - there was not one poor player in the side - "Chuck" being the standout. Coach's Award: Robert Watkins Achievements: Robert Watkins - 100th 1st Gr game Sat 13/5/00 vs Manly-Warringah Man-Warr 2.3 8.5 12.10 17.12 (114) Goals: J Ward 2, S Stubbs 2, M Brazier, C Folkes, J Ware at Greygums Oval (R7) Penrith 1.2 2.5 4.5 7.10 (52) Best: D Cummings, S Allen, M Egan, C Marathakis, J Ware, R Watkins, S Bradley The Rams let another golden chance slip against Manly-Warringah. Ten minutes into the second term both sides had two goals and the game was there for the taking. Manly were then allowed to kick the next six goals of the quarter to take a virtually unassailable half-time lead. This was not as good a Manly side as Penrith had played in the past and it is now the time for the Rams to get the Manly "monkey" off its back. Preferably at the next meeting at Weldon Oval. Dave Cummings did a great job at full-back and Steve Allen was again consistent in the middle. A disappointing result after the previous week's win. Coach's Award: David Cummings Achievements: Steve Allen - 50th game Sat 20/5/00 vs UNSW/ES Penrith 2.6 6.11 9.11 15.15 (105) Goals: G Bradley 4, R Murie 4, C Folkes 2, C Marathakis 2, J Ward, D Cummings, L Donoghue at Trumper Park (R8) UNSW/ES 2.2 5.4 9.6 12.8 (80) Best: S Allen, C O'Brien, G Bradley, D Cummings, M Egan, C Marathakis The Rams triumphed over this club in First Grade for the first ever time. Penrith had the better of the play in the opening half and raced to a 25 point lead in the second term. But in a somewhat customary lapse, the opposition was allowed in for quick goals and was back in it at half-time. After an even third term, Uni NSW/ES kicked the opening couple of goals in the last quarter and the Rams were looking under pressure. But the side responded well, kicking six of the last seven goals of the game. Steve Allen continued to show good form in the middle and it was good to see "Tubby" Bradley back, kicking four goals. Coach's Award: Steve Allen Sat 27/5/00 v Hol-Parra-B'town HPB 4.3 5.5 6.9 9.11 (65) Goals: G Bradley, C Nuske, D Cummings, J Ware, M Egan at Greygums Oval (R9) Penrith 0.1 2.2 5.3 5.6 (36) Best: C O'Brien, D Cummings, M Brazier, S Allen, D Perry, M Egan, G Leaf The Rams took on the "glamour" side of the 2000 season and quickly found themselves five goals to nil down in the second term. The game took on a diff- erent complexion from then on, with Penrith kicking the next five goals of the match to be only four points down midway through the third quarter. In with a sniff, the side yet again found itself unable to capitalize. The Goannas kicked a late goal before three-quarter time and booted the only three in the final term to run out deceptively easy winners. The Rams let slip a golden chance against a higher placed side - for the umpteenth time in the past two seasons. Coach's Award: Cameron O'Brien

Sat 3/6/00 vs Hawkesbury Penrith 6.2 8.3 15.7 20.11 (131) Goals: J Ware 6, M Brazier 2, G Bradley 2, J Ward 2, R Murie 2, S Stubbs 2, C Marathakis 2, at Greygums Oval (R10) H'bury 4.2 7.6 9.7 10.8 (68) S Bradley, N Hearnes Best: C Marathakis, M Egan, N Hearnes, S Allen, R Watkins, J Ware In a week when the future of the Hawkesbury club was in the balance, the Rams faced them in what should have been a straightforward and easy win. But from the moment the Saints scored the first goal it was clear that they were not going to lay down. It was a very even first half and when Hawkesbury scored two goals to go 9 points up early in the third term a shock result looked on the cards. But the Penrith side started to play football something like they can, scoring 12 of the next 13 goals to run out easy winners. It was a patchy performance and one of which Mick Walker would not have been totally satisfied. Coach's Award: Mark Egan Sat 10/6/00 vs Southern Sharks Penrith 4.0 8.1 11.5 16.7 (103) Goals: G Bradley 6, S Stubbs 2, R Murie 2, J Ware 2, R Watkins, M Egan, J Ward, C Folkes at Gwawley Park (R11) Sth Sharks 0.4 5.5 7.5 9.6 (60) Best: M Brazier, J Ware, S Stubbs, G Bradley, M Egan, R Murie The long weekend normally does not see club football and both clubs were accordingly depleted. The Rams put in a consistent performance against a side they scraped in against in Round 2. Accurate kicking in the first half was the key and meant Penrith held the lead at half-time despite a second quarter Sharks resurgence. The third quarter saw Penrith consolidate and a convincing victory was sealed with a five goal last quarter. Tubby Bradley kicked six up forward to record his 100th goal for the club, with good assistance from Stubbs and Murie. Mick Brazier completed a good day with his backline effort. Coach's Award: Jason Ware Achievements: Glenn Bradley - 100th club goal Sat 17/6/00 vs Wollongong Penrith 3.5 8.9 11.10 14.13 (97) Goals: G Bradley 5, J Ward 2, N Hearnes 2, C Folkes 2, R Murie, G Masters, M Egan at North Dalton Park (R12) W'gong 2.2 6.2 10.8 6.3 (39) Best: D Cummings, S Stubbs, J Ware, J Ward, M Egan, S Allen A sensational finish to this game distracted from what was an excellent performance by the Rams. Five minutes into the last quarter, after Wollongong had kicked two quick goals to hit the lead, the Penrith players manned up and noticed an extra Wollongong player on the field. A player count confirmed this and Wollongong's score was wiped. The score at the time was Wollongong 12.8 to Penrith 11.11. With the game now won, the Rams relaxed and allowed the opposition to outscore them six goals to three for the remainder of the term. It would have been a tense finish to the game if this incident had not occurred. Coach's Award: Simon Stubbs Achievements: Michael Brazier - 50th game Sat 24/6/00 vs Macquarie Uni Penrith 1.1 4.4 6.9 10.10 (70) Goals: J Ward 5, S Stubbs 2, G Bradley, S Allen, N Hearnes at Greygums Oval (R13) Mac Uni 2.4 3.9 4.13 9.14 (68) Best: N Hearnes, S Allen, D Dunn, R Watkins, S Bradley, J Ward One of the best wins in the history of the club. The Uni boys were particularly cocky after a big reserve grade win and probably expected to walk all over the boys from the fibro houses (their coach's expression) in first grade as well. But the Rams had other ideas and put together four quarters of tough, un- comprising football. Leading by a point at half-time, Penrith had so often succumbed in similar situations over the past season and a half. This win was vit- al for the club to prove to everyone that we can match it with these supposed better sides and win. It was first grade's first victory over Mac Uni since 1994. Coach's Award: Nathan Hearnes Sat 1/7/00 vs Sydney Uni Penrith 1.2 5.6 8.12 11.15 (81) Goals: G Bradley 3, S Stubbs 2, G Masters 2, C Marathakis, R Murie, J Ward, N Hearnes at Sydney Uni (R14) Syd Uni 2.5 2.8 5.10 7.15 (57) Best: N Hearnes, M Egan, S Allen, S Bradley, R Murie, R Allen This game was the real test after the previous week's win and the Rams passed with flying colours. Sydney Uni had the scoring end in the first term but after 20 minutes' goalless play it was Penrith who kicked the first major. Sydney Uni then replied twice to hold a slight ascendancy at the first change. The Rams took control with the breeze in the second term and sealed Uni's fate by outscoring them again in the third. In an even final term every challenge Sydney Uni put forward the blue and whites responded to brilliantly. Typical of the side in recent weeks, every player all over the ground contributed. Coach's Award: Nathan Hearnes Sat 8/7/00 vs South-West Sydney S-W Syd 2.2 8.5 10.9 15.12 (102) Goals: J Ware 4, G Bradley 3, S Stubbs 2, D Cummings 2, M Egan at Greygums Oval (R15) Penrith 4.3 5.6 10.10 12.10 (82) Best: D Dunn, M Egan, C O'Brien, J Ware, R Allen, C Nuske The Rams went into this game with everything to gain, and lose, but were nowhere near the same team as the one which took the field in the previous two weeks. Having said that, Penrith opened well to kick four of the first five goals of the game and were travelling well. S-W Sydney were the better team from then until half-time, holding a 17 point lead into the long change. The Rams hit back in the third term with five goals to look well and truly back in the game. In the last term, with the game there to be won, it was the opposition who stood up, with Penrith disappointinly flat. Next week's game is now a must win. Coach's Award: David Dunn Sat 15/7/00 vs Manly-Warringah Penrith 3.3 7.4 11.10 17.14 (116) Goals: S Stubbs 6, G Bradley 3, J Ward 2, J Ware 2, R Murie, M Egan, R Allen, N Hearnes at Weldon Oval (R16) Man-Warr 2.3 4.4 4.6 5.9 (39) Best: C Nuske, D Perry, C Dent, J Ware, S Stubbs, D Cummings (and the rest!!) Well, at last the monkey is off the back. After years of copping hiding after hiding from this club in first grade, the Rams finally turned the tables, at Weldon Oval and by the emphatic margin of 77 points. It could have been much more but for inaccurate kicking in the second half when Penrith were dominating. With only a three goal half-time lead, the Rams must have been wondering if they could throw yet another game when in a winning position but the third term sealed the historic result. Six goals in the final term rubbed salt into the wounds, as did singing the club song in front of the Weldon Oval grandstand. By half-time Penrith was ten goals in front and the final margin of 21 goals was a true reflection of the difference between the sides. Having said that, the margin should have really been a lot greater, as the Rams continually blazed away at goal and did not play direct football. But, they needed to win and they did - job done. It was a fitting result for Scott Bradley, who was celebrating his 100th game for the club. A win next week would cement the bonus of third place for the Rams. Penrith ran into a red-hot Holroyd-Parramatta side and were behind the eight-ball from the start. Only inaccurate opposition kicking prevented the Rams from being a lot further down at quarter time and the side simply could not get back into the game from there. The Goannas were hard at the ball, highly skilled and the Penrith side was completely down. Several injuries and a report com- pounded Penrith's woes. Having said that, the players fought it out to the end and had a good learning experience as to how different finals football will be. Reserve Grade Coach’s Report

The first year of the new millennium did not prove to be a very successful one on the field for the reserves team with only two wins recorded for the whole season. However the role of any reserves team in a well run club is to provide a good back-up of players to the senior side. The team was made up of a spread of older well seasoned players through to a good sprinkle of young players working their way through the ranks from the Penrith junior sides and under 18’s. The numbers all year were good, and for the whole season there was only one day that we were a bit short. The team spirit within the side was always at a very high level despite the losses, with the older players guiding the younger ones at all times whenever possible. As the coach of the side I can say that I always received full support from all the players sometimes under very difficult circumstances of large defeats. As a backup side to the very good senior team, I believe the reserves team did its job to the fullest. During the year the senior team suffered many injuries and unavailabilities and we were always able to provide good quality players to replace them sometimes leaving our own team a bit bare. However I firmly believe that any top side is only as good as the support that it receives from its reserves team and in that respect we were top of the ladder. To Mick Walker and his senior team I offer my warm congratulations on a job well done. Halfway through the year they were being written off by all of us as a chance, however with a firm belief in his players and them with a firm belief in themselves they fought there way back beating all the top sides and letting the whole competition know that we were going to play a very important part in the years proceedings. It has been my pleasure to work with a very fine bunch of young men within this club this year all of whom have very high personal ideals and are a credit to both themselves and the club. I believe Mick Walker to be the equal of any coach in the Sydney competition, and his many years of experience as a coach and footballer lifted the club this year when all seemed lost. It has been my pleasure to work with Mick this season and assist him in as many ways as I could, and to be able to call him a friend. The same applies to Cliff Bradley and his under 18 team. Cliff has done a magnificent job with the boys under very adverse circumstances at times, but he never lost his faith in them and the ability of the new boys to the game to learn, and they did not let him down. Well done Cliff and thank you for all your help throughout the year as runner and all other jobs throughout the whole season. Thank you to everybody who assisted in getting my team on to the ground every week, it is not an easy job to do at times and could not be achieved without the help of a lot of people. Finally thank you to the club for giving me the opportunity to be involved this season, there are many highs and lows when involved with a sporting team during a year, but I think that we can honestly say that the boys provided us with many more highs than lows in the year 2000. Best wishes to everybody at the club for the future, and I look forward to remaining involved in some capacity with the Penrith Rams. Remember that as a club…… “The only way that you won’t achieve your goals, is if you spend too much time looking at the objects in front of them”. Peter O’Neil SFA RESERVE GRADE LADDER

Hawkesbury had by far the better of the play in the first half and should have been in front at half-time. It was only the efforts of Cameron O'Brien, Lachlan Smith and Mark Steunenberg in defence that constantly repelled them. Penrith slammed on four goals early in the third term and looked to be in control. But they relaxed and the Saints were back in it at the final change. The Rams steadied to record a decept- evely easy win. Scott Simington rucked well against taller opposition and Rick Allen showed his class. Lachlan Smith's debut was an outstanding one. The Rams opened well in the first quarter, ten points up at quarter time, and looking the better side. The Sharks gradually fought back and by the final change were in charge, although the scoreboard did not show it. With arguing amongst themselves and with the umpires, the Penrith side were making things easy for their opposition. It heightened in the last quarter and Sutherland ran away with the game with little or no opposition. Only several players could hold their head up, ruckman Scott Simington deserving his Coach's Award. The second half was a different story, the Rams decided to play team football and a much more even affair resulted. It showed yet again the benefits of team discipline, something this club has lacked on and off for a number of seasons. Outscoring the opposition in the final quarter was a reflection of the ability in this reserve grade side. Unfortun- ately, putting it together for a whole game seems impossible. Simon De Souza won the Coach's Award for his best performance for the club to date. After an even first five or so minutes, Sydney Uni rammed home seven straight goals by quarter time. A fur- ther six in the second quarter and the Rams were an embarrassing 71 points down. The side did not run or talk, hunted in packs and failed to use the tal- ent in their ranks to anywhere near its full effect. The capacity of this side to operate well below its full ability is astonishing. Failure to adhere to the basics is by far the biggest problem. "Agro" Adamson put in his best and most disciplined performance of the season, and Brett Walsh did a good job in defence. After 20 minutes, they had four goals on the board and were dominating. Running, handball- ing, talking and playing excellent football. Then they went to sleep and allowed Wollongong back in the game. A third quarter revival saw them back in front and the game there for the taking. And yet in the final term they barely got the ball past their half-forward line. A complete disappointment for all the supporters and those who put their time and effort into the club. Stu Ayres put in four good quarters and "young" Cliff Bradley provided spark in the 2nd half. The Rams hit back with the opening goals of the third term but extremely dubious field and goal umpiring then put paid to any hope of a win. The side kicked nine goals and looked extremely competitive, amazing what you can do when you knuckle down to footy and forget all the crap. This hopefully should be the start of a resurgence of the reserve grade for 2000. Time will tell. Stu Ayres took out his second Coach's Award and just maybe he is starting to show what he is capable of! Enough said. The side played well and could have quite easily won the game. The second quarter was the turning point, the 16 point half-time deficit proving impossible to peg back. The continued improvement in the side is still being held back by acts of ill-discipline - when everyone in the side focusses entirely this side will be hard to beat. Michael Haynes on the half-back flank played his best game for quite some time. "Elbows" Klinsic showed his continued improvement and new player Phil Grueff showed outstanding form. Coach's Award: Michael Haynes Sat 20/5/00 vs UNSW/ES UNSW/ES 2.6 3.10 5.15 8.21 (69) Goals: J Bradley 3, A Prowse 2, A Clayton, B Fishburn, S Ayres, S Egan at Trumper Park (R8) Penrith 2.0 3.3 7.3 9.5 (59) Best: A Clayton, M Klinsic, A Prowse, C Martin, B Fishburn The inaccurate kicking of UNSW/ES kept the Rams in this game all day, to the extent that despite having half their opposition's shots for goal, the scores were level at three-quarter time. With no real wind advantage, it was anyone's game. Unfortunately, Penrith again could not grasp a win when it was within their reach. It is difficult to explain why. A few reasons - such as continued ill-discipline, failure to follow coaching instructions and less intensity than the opposition - can be offered for a start. Two Under 18's from last year, Alan Prowse and Mark Klinsic, played well and Andrew Clayton put in his best game. Coach's Award: Andrew Clayton Sat 27/5/00 v Hol-Parra-B'town HPB 4.5 4.8 9.11 14.13 (97) Goals: M Steunenberg, M Collister at Greygums Oval (R9) Penrith 0.3 1.5 1.6 2.6 (18) Best: J Adamson, A Prowse, B Cutting, M Klinsic, S Egan Down 26 points at quarter-time, the Rams held their own in the second term and were an outside chance of victory at half-time. But that was the end of the resistance, Holroyd-Parra kicking ten goals to one in the second half. The final stages of the game descended into farce, players from both sides being sent from the field. The fluky, gusty wind conditions made playing good football extremely difficult for both sides. This match completed an extremely dis- appointing first half of the season for the side, with only one win when it could have easily been four or five. Bryce Cutting was very impressive in his debut. Penrith players credited with games/goals). There was some doubt as to whether this game was going to proceed, given the Hawkesbury club's difficulty in fielding a Reserve Grade side this season. Subsequent to the result, the AFL (NSW/ACT) ruled that the result not count and the game be treated as a bye, as the Saints had withdrawn their Reserve Grade side. However, to all players on the ground it was a fair dinkum match and it was played as such. Penrith were all over their hapless opponents in the first half and a cakewalk win looked likely. But the Saints fought back so that the Rams had to fight just to win - again the full four quarters were not played! Coach's Award: Warwick Richardson Sat 10/6/00 vs Southern Sharks Sth Sharks 1.4 6.10 11.12 11.18 (84) Goals: S Stubbs 3, J Pickup 2, G Masters, B Weatherhead at Gwawley Park (R11) Penrith 3.3 3.3 5.3 7.4 (46) Best: A Prowse, G Neighbour, J Pickup, M Collister, W Richardson This game provided a similar pattern to the game between the two sides earlier in the season. Penrith opened up well to lead by 11 points at the first break and were playing confident, positive football. Some ill-discipline early in the second term and Sutherland took the opportunity to take control. In fact, the Sharks kicked 10.8 to 2.0 in the second and third terms, while Penrith easily outscored them in the first and last. If only this side could play four consistent, disciplined quarters of football - they could be so much higher up the ladder. Alan Prowse showed how much he has improved and Horse's presence helped. On a still day (a novelty for North Dalton Park), Wollongong took the initiative to lead by four goals at quarter time. Despite having as much of the play in the second term, Penrith could not make any headway on the scoreboard. The second half saw both sides have ten scoring shots - Wollongong kicked 9.1 to Penrith's 5.5, and therein lay the story. The Rams needed to make more use of their scoring opportunities to be a chance. The experienced players, Steunenberg, Collister and Allen stood up in this game but it wasn't enough. Macquarie Uni opened well on a day with no real wind advantage, and the first quarter lead was just a sign of what was to come. By half-time the game was totally beyond Penrith. Although the opposition had the better skills, the Rams let themselves down in the basics. Things like running to the contest, leading, making space, presenting options, etc, etc, etc just did not happen, making it very easy for Mac Uni to do as they pleased. Penrith managed two quick goals at the start of the third term to show what they can do, sadly this sort of form has been rarely seen this year. Despite fielding a side which had a goal to goal line of Campbell, De Souza, R Allen, Collister and J Bradley, all of whom have played regular first grade, the Rams were totally outclassed. The side was reasonably competitive up until half-time but conceded seven goals in each of the third and fourth quarters, allowing the deficit to blow out completely. The guys should not be totally disappointed, coming up against an unbeaten side which has handed this sort of thrashing out to a number of sides. It was great to have Wade Campbell and Jabba back. But by quarter time, they had let the opposition back in. For the next two quarters South-West Sydney dominated the scoring, despite the fact that the Rams regularly got the ball into their own forward line. Lack of skill, communication and running cost the side dearly, as has been the time so many times in 2000. Coach Peter O'Neil must be wond- ering what has to be done to get the side playing to its potential. Wade Campbell showed he is not far away from first grade selection with his performance. Coach's Award: Brad Fishburn Sat 15/7/00 vs Manly-Warringah Man-Warr 5.4 9.6 13.10 18.14 (122) Goals: J Bradley 3, M Collister, C Martin at Weldon Oval (R16) Penrith 0.0 2.2 4.2 5.3 (33) Best: C Martin, M Collister, B Fishburn, A Prowse Another disappointing display from reserve grade, but congratulations to the players sticking the season out and battling each game out to the end. This game was like a broken record, with yet another frustratingly slow start to the game. Five goals down in no time was always going to be hard to peg back and this definitely proved the case. With only two rounds left it is now up to the Reserve Graders to show support to the Under 18's and Seniors by attending training and continuing to put up the maximum effort in each remaining game. The flashes of ability shown by this side means they should have recorded more wins. Despite the ability in the team, another large defeat was re- ceived, at the hands of a side which it nearly beat earlier in the season. The game was over at quarter time, when the Rams found themselves seven goals down. The second and last quarters saw Penrith match their opponents, but the other two terms lost them the game. Defensively, the Rams battled on all day, with Brett Walsh leading the way with his best game of the season. With one game remaining, this season will go down as one of many lost chances. Despite hav- ing senior experience in the side in Michael Brazier and Greg Masters, the Rams were outclassed by a superior side on the day. Having said that, the five goals conceded in the first term were the most the side conceded in any quarter, so they defended stoutly and well all day. Third (Under 18) Grade Coach’s Report

The Under 18’s Rams side has without doubt done the club proud in 2000. In many of the games we took the field with less than the 16 players but in every game the players, win or lose, they did everything I asked and gave 110%. To get to the preliminary final and then within 8 points of the grand final is an effort they all should be proud of. Losing Ross Jennings, Dave Carroll, Lachlan Smith and Ben Muscat for large parts of the season was a major blow. The lads battled on, bringing along mates who had never played Aussie Rules before, and, to these new players’ credit, they liked the game and stayed for the rest of the season. To each and every player I would like to say thanks for the privilege of being your coach. I have coached and assisted with sides (junior and senior) over the last eight years and this side is without a doubt the best side I have been involved with, with no one player putting himself above the side. That is why I believe they were so successful. To those players who stay in the 18’s you will be the experienced players and I wish you success next season. To the players who go up to seniors, which I hope is all of you, our future as a club in getting into the Sydney AFL is assured. I would like to make special mention to Glen Harris, who played for us all season as well as playing Under 16’s as well – 2 games every Saturday. Glen will be eligible to play 18’s for another two seasons and similar thanks go out to another Under 16, Jason Scala. To my captain and vice- captain, David Bradley and Brian Skepper, thanks for doing an excellent job on and off the field. Also a big thankyou to Helen Skepper, who stepped in as team manager when no-one else would, and had everything organized every Saturday. To all the people who did goals and boundary and helped every week – thankyou. To Garry Ayres and Mark Spooner – their input, guidance and help during the season was unbelievable. Also, Cindy and Maria for doing the strapping. To all the parents, congratulations on raising a wonderful bunch of young men. To the club committee, thankyou for having the faith in me to coach the side. Thanks to Mick Walker and Peter O’Neil for your support and, last but not least, thanks to my lovely wife, who put up with me, yet again, in what was an arduous but very rewarding season. See you round the club in 2001. Cliff Bradley

Sat 15/4/00 vs UNSW/ES Penrith 4.6 7.6 8.8 8.11 (59) Goals: L Smith 3, D Heath 2, D Carroll, C Heber, B Muscat at Village Green (R2) UNSW/ES 3.0 5.3 7.9 8.10 (58) Best: D Bradley, D Carroll, L Smith, N Pritchard, B Svenson, C Heber The Under 18's went into their first match extremely underprepared. They had no practice matches and a number of the players had only limited pre-season preparation. With several new players, together with Under 16's filling in, it was hard to know what to expect. The side dominated the first quarter and, but for inaccurate kicking, could have had the game won at the first change. The second quarter was more even, but the side ran out of match fitness in the second half. Desperation and desire carried the side through to a thrilling one point win. It was a fitting result for a side which put their bodies on the line all day. Coach's Award: David Bradley

Sat 22/4/00 vs Manly-Warringah Penrith won on (90 pts for at Greygums Oval (R3) fft (4 mtch pts) allocated) Sat 29/4/00 vs Southern Sharks Penrith 2.1 3.9 9.10 14.13 (97) Goals: D Carroll 3, D Bradley 3, G Harris 2, P Haggerty 2, N Pritchard, B Skepper, L Smith, B Svenson at Greygums Oval (R4) Sth Sharks 1.1 2.1 5.1 5.2 (32) Best: D Bradley, D Carroll, J Forde, P Haggerty, J Diamond Still shy on playing numbers, the Rams owed Sutherland a defeat after being unable to beat them last year. And beat them they did, although it took a slow first half before the side got going. Despite having all the play until half-time, poor forward play and finishing resulted in only a 14 point lead. The Sharks kicked the opening two goals of the third term to get within 3 points, but from thereon in it was all Penrith. Play on football, running and handball opened up the opposition. In addition to the best players named above, everyone contributed on the day at some stage in an excellent and very promising performance. Coach's Award: Jimmy Forde Sat 6/5/00 vs Balmain Penrith 2.4 5.9 7.9 9.18 (72) Goals: D Heath 4, L Smith 2, N Middleton, L Gilbert, M Ross at Drummoyne Oval (R5) Balmain 1.0 1.1 3.4 4.5 (29) Best: C Heber, L Smith, D Bradley, G Harris, J Diamond, D Carroll, D Heath The Rams went to Balmain facing an unknown quantity in the Tigers. With four Under 16's filling in, the side went into a game with 20 players for the first time in 2000. In a scrappy and undisciplined game, the Rams went into half-time with a 32 point break. They kicked the first two goals of the third term in quick time but then went to sleep, allowing Balmain to play the better football. The Rams players must learn not to let themselves to get "sucked in" by lesser quality footballers who only want to fight. It still would have been a big win but for late inaccurate kicking - something the team must work on. Coach's Award: Carl Heber Sat 13/5/00 (R6) Bye

Sat 20/5/00 vs Manly-Warringah Man-Warr 3.1 8.1 14.4 17.6 (108) Goals: N Pritchard, L Gilbert, D Carroll at Weldon Oval (R7) Penrith 2.6 2.6 2.6 3.7 (25) Best: D Bradley, G Harris, D Carroll, N Middleton, L Smith, J Forde, C Heber Penrith had all the play in the opening 10 minutes and were in front 2.6 to nil. From there on in it was all Manly. They kicked three quick goals to sneak in front at quarter-time and then kicked a further 14 unanswered goals. The Rams fell completely apart in the face of a spirited opposition and were perhaps unprepared for what confronted them. Having said this, the players never and in the final quarter, when reduced to 14 men, played gritty football. Serious injuries to David Carroll and Lachlan Smith and a frivolous report made things worse. Neil Middleton put in a great defensive effort despite the odds. Coach's Award: Neil Middleton

Sat 27/5/00 vs UNSW/ES UNSW/ES 5.5 7.7 8.7 9.9 (63) Goals: R Jennings, B Skepper, S Barlow at Greygums Oval (R8) Penrith 1.0 1.2 3.6 3.7 (25) Best: D Bradley, B Svenson, J Diamond, J Forde, T Alleyn, C Heber, S Barlow Penrith lost this game in the first half, specifically the opening quarter. Down 41 points at half-time was always going to present a difficult task but to their credit the young Rams put up a far better showing in the second half. With a number of new players in the side who all showed promise, it was always going to take some time for the side to gel on the day. In addition, very windy conditions severely tested the skills of all players on the ground. David Bradley continued his good form but is now being closely guarded by the opposition. Ben Svenson won the Coach's Award for completing a successful tagging role. Coach's Award: Ben Svenson

Sat 3/6/00 vs Southern Sharks Sth Sharks 3.2 5.3 6.5 11.8 (74) Goals: D Bradley 2, L Gilbert 2, B Muscat, C O'Brien, D Heath, C Heber at Greygums Oval (R9) Penrith 3.1 5.5 8.7 8.8 (56) Best: D Bradley, B Skepper, C Heber, N Middleton, B Muscat Penrith were looking to arrest their form slump after two consecutive losses, whilst the Sharks had not lost a game since their last visit to Penrith. It was a very even first half and Penrith looked to be the side to beat when they went to a 14 point lead with only a quarter to play. Inexplicably, they let Sutherland in for 5 goals in the final term, while only being able to manage a solitary point themselves. Perhaps fitness, perhaps lack of confidence, but here was a game there for the taking thrown away. In any case, all the players did their best but must have felt extremely disappointed following the last quarter capitulation. Coach's Award: David Bradley

Sat 10/6/00 vs Balmain Balmain 4.2 4.3 7.5 8.6 (54) Goals: D Heath 3, B Skepper, D Bradley, D Pitkin at Gipps Road (R10) Penrith 2.0 5.1 5.2 6.3 (39) Best: C Heber, D Bradley, J Forde, B Skepper, N Middleton With only 14 players, due to long-term injuries and unavailability, the Rams found themselves up against a 15 man Balmain side. The Tigers took the early ascendancy, but Penrith fought back well in the second term to be in front at half-time. The game was lost in the third quarter when Balmain scored three unanswered goals, setting up three losses in a row for the beleaguered Under 18's. Without more numbers at training and on game day the side may well struggle for the remainder of the season. Carl Heber played his best and most outstanding game of the year to date and was awarded the Coach's Award. Coach's Award: Carl Heber

Sat 17/6/00 vs UNSW/ES UNSW/ES 1.1 8.5 10.8 12.13 (85) Goals: L Gilbert 2, B Skepper, N Middleton, D Bradley, D Heath, G Harris, C Heber, S Bailey at Village Green (R11) Penrith 3.4 5.6 7.7 9.9 (63) Best: D Bradley, L Gilbert, C Heber, G Harris, C O'Brien, M Nealand Another game with 14 Penrith men facing 15 opposition players. Despite this, Penrith opened well and were 15 points up at quarter time. The game was lost in the second term, when UNSW/ES kicked 7 of their 12 goals for the game to convert their deficit into a 17 point lead. From there on, the game was an even contest, with the Penrith boys being left to rue their poor second term. Dave Bradley continued his outstanding form, as did Carl Heber. Leigh Gilbert was a good target in the forward line and Caleb O'Brien showed his improvement - after taking an early knock. Glen Harris played U16's straight afterwards! Coach's Award: Caleb O'Brien Sat 24/6/00 vs Balmain Penrith 3.3 7.7 10.9 13.16 (94) Goals: D Heath 5, J Diamond 3, D Bradley 2, J Forde, N Middleton, S Bailey at Greygums Oval (R12) Balmain 0.1 0.5 2.6 2.7 (19) Best: D Bradley, J Diamond, B Skepper, D Heath, C Heber, T Alleyn The Rams went into this game badly needing a win after losing their last five, both to consolidate their position in the four and to restore lost confidence. For the first time in quite a while the side actually had players on the bench, which was a big bonus. From the opening quarter, Penrith were in control of the game and didn't look like losing. With Dave Bradley dominating in the middle and Jy Diamond a good target at centre-half forward Balmain could not make much of an impact at all. In fact they looked a real chance to go through the game goal-less, until they slotted two quick majors late in the third quarter. Coach's Award: David Bradley Sat 1/7/00 vs Southern Sharks Sth Sharks 4.2 7.5 10.10 11.15 (81) Goals: B Svenson 2, D Bradley, D Heath, L Gilbert, J Tooley, D Pitkin at Lincoln Oval (R13) Penrith 3.0 6.0 6.0 7.2 (44) Best: D Pitkin, D Bradley, C Heber, L Gilbert, J Tooley, G Harris Against the top placed, but hardly unbeatable, Sharks the Rams again suffered from lack of key players on the day, resulting in the bare 16 being available. Still, it was a promising start by the side, 8 points down at the first change and still well in it at half-time. A poor third quarter, where Penrith could not trouble the scorers, sealed the win for the Sharks. Penrith's lack of commitment and discipline in the second half did not help their cause and all players found the going difficult in the windy, swirly conditions. Glen Harris played his usual consistent game and Daniel Pitkin put in his best game for the season. Coach's Award: Glen Harris Sat 8/7/00 (R14) Bye Sat 15/7/00 vs Manly-Warringah Man-Warr 3.1 4.4 7.6 9.9 (63) Goals: L Gilbert 3, D Bradley, D Heath, J Diamond at Weldon Oval (R15) Penrith 1.3 3.5 3.7 6.8 (44) Best: D Bradley, B Skepper, J Diamond, C Heber, N Middleton Returning to the scene of their biggest loss for the season, the Rams were hoping for a much improved performance against the side they are likely to play first in the finals. After the usual slow start, Penrith hit back in the second term and at half-time it was anyone's game. But, as has happened so many times this season, one poor quarter cost the game. The 23 point three-quarter time deficit was too much to peg back, despite a good final term. The Under 18's are still assured of a finals place, though, and with Lachlan Smith, Dave Carroll, John Ayres and others to return the finals may well be a different story. Coach's Award: Brian Skepper Sat 22/7/00 vs Balmain Balmain 1.3 4.6 7.8 11.10 (76) Goals: L Gilbert 2, D Bradley, S Bailey, M Langham, S Barlow, J Diamond, J Tooley at Greygums Oval (R16) Penrith 4.1 5.3 6.6 8.9 (57) Best: D Bradley, B Skepper, B Svenson, S Barlow, N Middleton, G Harris Quite possibly the most disappointing loss of the season. Despite missing Jimmy Forde, Danny Heath and Mitch Nealand, Penrith went into this game with still a strong side and should have won. The opening quarter confirmed this, with the Rams the dominant side. But from there on in, it was all Balmain and, to their credit, they fully deserved the win. Penrith seemed to rest on their laurels after the first term and Balmain dictated the terms of the match. The Rams did not run enough, took the wrong option too often and were less skilful on the day than their opposition. It was a good wakeup call for the team, however. Coach's Award: Stephen Barlow Sun 30/7/00 vs UNSW/ES UNSW/ES 2.6 5.8 6.11 7.12 (54) Goals: J Tooley 2, S Barlow, M Langham, D Heath at Village Green (R17) Penrith 2.1 2.5 4.6 5.12 (42) Best: J Forde, L Smith, D Carroll, B Skepper, D Bradley, J Tooley Another winnable game lost, but nevertheless Cliff Bradley and his team came out of the game with many positives. Most important of these was the return of Dave Carroll and Lachlan Smith, both of whom played well and got through the game unscathed. Despite having five players unavailable, Penrith went into the game with a full side and one on the bench, a good sign of numbers for the finals. Yet again, one quarter cost the game, this time the second. With the opposition tiring, the Rams could have won the game in the final term, but for inaccurate kicking - a plague of the side on so many occasions this season. Coach's Award: Jimmy Forde Sat 5/8/00 vs Southern Sharks Sth Sharks 1.1 3.4 5.4 7.5 (47) Goals: B Skepper, L Smith, D Heath at Gwawley Park (R18) Penrith 1.3 2.3 2.5 3.9 (27) Best: L Smith, D Carroll, N Pritchard, D Bradley, C Heber, J Ayres Another lost game which was well within Penrith's grasp. A combination of yet another quiet quarter (the third) and inaccurate kicking were the reasons on this occasion. Starting with the luxury of a nearly full bench, the Rams were well in the game after a dour first half. But they could only manage two behinds in the third term and then kicked 1.4 in the last. Still, it goes to show that with players back, a full bench and hard, determined football they can match any side. The first semi-final this coming week will see if the potential will come to fruition. Dave Carroll did well (Coach's Award) in his second match back. Coach's Award: David Carroll

Elimination Final Sat 5/8/00 v Wollongong Wollongong 5.4 9.6 13.12 16.16 (112) Goals: G Bradley 3, C Nuske 2, G Masters 2, C Folkes 2, N Hearnes, R Allen at Sydney Uni (EF) Penrith 3.4 5.8 9.12 11.15 (81) Best: G Masters, M Egan, J Ware, R Allen, C O'Brien, M Brazier The Rams' first finals appearance in First Grade since 1994, ironically against the same side they played that year. Wollongong were quickly out of the blocks, kicking the first three goals of the game. Penrith hit back and trailed by two at the first break, but several missed opportunities proved costly. For the remainder of the game, every time Penrith got close Wollongong were able to kick away. What was pleasing was the effort put in by the players until the final siren and the collective character they displayed. A year of massive improvement, in which the Penrith club showed it can match it with any other side. But with a full-strength side and a weakened opposition the Rams had plenty of well-placed confidence. Despite Penrith's superiority, Manly put up a strong showing until half-time. A great third term, where Penrith kicked four straight and Manly's only goal came right on the siren, put the result beyond doubt. An even last term saw a Penrith win by 16 points, hard fought and well deserved. There was celebrating after the final siren, the win putting the Rams in with a chance for the flag. The Rams looked the better side during the first term but suffered another lapse to go in at half-time eight points down. The second half of the game turned into a real dog-fight, with goals at a premium. Two last quarter goals by Carl Heber got the Rams to within two points with less than five minutes left to play. The Sharks went forward to kick the winning goal, however. The side would have been disappointed with the result but they should try to reflect back on a successful season. Canteen Report Following the well deserved retirement of Joe and Sue Bradley, Stu Fletcher took over the running of the canteen in addition to his responsibilities as vice-president. In unchartered territory for both himself and the club, Stu did a marvellous job in running the canteen, following in his predecessors’ footsteps of contributing considerable revenue to the club’s coffers. Since the introduction of the Under 18’s side in 1998, the canteen has turned into a full day’s operation when all three grades are playing at home. On cold winters’ days, it was great to turn up for the 18’s and have hot food and drinks ready, a situation not always found at opposition venues. The work in running the canteen on match days is not all that is involved – Stu also had to do all the purchasing, collecting and transporting the stock and doing the accounting work. He found a welcome assistant in Nathan Duffus, son of juniors Auskick coach Scott Duffus. Nathan was always there to help out, in addition to doing other duties such as timekeeping, etc. Also, mention must be made of Keelie Smith, who was there regularly on Saturdays to help Stu. Many thanks to all those who assisted Stu in setting up, packing up, serving and cooking. The assistance of these people made his job much easier. The canteen on Thursday night was also popular, the players appreciating having something to eat and drink after busting their boilers on the track. The money raised has gone to the club honour board which, at the time of writing, is nearly complete. Again, Keelie was a welcome assistant on the cold Thursday nights. It is not known at present who will be running the canteen in 2001, but everyone please make sure you pitch in and help to make the manager’s job easier.

Social Report The 2000 social calendar featured more functions than in the previous years. Before Christmas, a training run and barbeque was held (minus bbq!) and was well attended – being summer, a social cricket match was held to round off the day. The season proper was kicked off with the now traditional jumper presentation and player auction, which again was a resounding success. The committee organized two official functions for the club during the season, Dumb and Dumber (featuring Mark Jackson and Warwick Capper) and a gambling night. Unfortunately, neither of these functions were nearly as well attended as could have been. People in the club have always asked for more functions to be organized, so it is up to everyone to support them when they are put on. Otherwise there is no point in going to the trouble of putting them on in the first place! The Emu Plains Sporting Club made the room in the bottom foyer available to the Rams for the first time, and this proved to be a good place for several after match get-togethers. With time hopefully we can have improvements done to the room to make it an even better venue. With the increased on-field success, there was plenty of patronage at Emu Plains during the year, celebrating wins over Macquarie Uni, Sydney Uni, Manly, etc. This type of result certainly makes the beer go down better! Thanks to the organization of Queenie and Horse, the Rams were able to have their first trip away in a number of years, with about 30 guys going. Everyone behaved themselves in Canberra and had a good time. Even the accomodation place would be happy to have us back! The Annual Presentation Night capped off a very good season on and off the field.

Junior Football Report

The season 2000 had started with a significant amount of change. First of all, the Penrith Junior club had a jumper and name change, voted for and supported by the players. We are now called the Penrith Swans and are wearing the Sydney Swans designed jumper. Secondly, the Penrith Valley Association was formed, thus eliminating the enormous amount of travel that players, parents and support staff had to endure in the past. The clubs in the new association are St Clair (Crows), Emu Plains (Lions), Blue Mountains (Kangaroos), Mt Druitt (Western Power), which are all new clubs, together with the existing Hawkesbury (Saints) and Penrith (Swans) clubs.

The juniors playing in the new association catered from Auskick through to the Under 12’s. The Under 13’s through to Under 16’s played in the Sydney Northside Association. 2000 was a successful season, with all teams bar one making the finals and the Under 16’s getting through to the Grand Final. Unfortunately, a flag was not to be for the Under 16’s, however they have showed the path for the younger players on how to be good sports in accepting defeat.

During the season Penrith juniors participated in representative trials for both the Penrith Valley and Northside associations. All of the players who tried out were successful in making the representative teams, thus proving the amount of talent the juniors have to offer. The pinnacle of this success was two of our Under 16 players who were selected in the Sydney Under 16 elite squad which played in the Sydney AFL Under 18 competition. Both of these players, Daniel Steers and David Leone, were invited to play a few games with the Sydney Swans reserves side, which participated in the Sydney AFL First Grade competition. This was a great honour and experience for these young men and further displays the football talent which exists in the Penrith area.

An important part of the juniors is our Auskick squad. Auskick is a program which caters for the under age player not ready for competition football. The children are taught the basics of footy – kicking, handball, marking, etc, which are then practiced through modified games. Auskick is controlled by our co-ordinator through the Auskick coaches. Some of these players are the children of the Penrith senior club’s players, if you have a son or daughter who wishes to start up in Auskick, or any other grade, please contact: Peter Shaw (President) – 0247 543480 Allan Tinker (Vice-President Football) – 9625 0738 Scott Duffus (Vice-President Administration) – 0247 290488 Lyn Brydon (Vice-President Auskick) – 0247 332376

Treasurer’s/Auditor’s Reports

Treasurer’s Report

With last years large loss and the need for three sets of new jumpers required for the start of the season next year that could amount to $5000, it was vitally important that this year was profitable. With no one to run our canteen after the Bradleys retired after many years of excellent service it was looking as if we might have to sub-contract our canteen and therefore eat into the profits of our most profitable exercise. However thanks to an unselfish act by Stuart Fletcher who sacrificed most of his personal enjoyment in the club to run the canteen we were able to maintain canteen profits at the same level as the past two years. However then came what I can only describe in retrospect as an unwise financial decision made by the Penrith Rams Committee. After a few years of people saying that we do not have enough social functions the committee decided to outlay a considerable sum to have a Sportsmans Night at the Leonay Club with Mark Jackson and Warwick Capper. The support the Club members gave was disappointing in the extreme and with only 35 people turning up the RAMS lost $1600. All other social functions this year suffered from similar lack of support from the players. It is now my firm belief that this Club needs its players and supporters to make the maximum effort to support any functions organized in the future. What had to happen after this was extreme belt tightening to achieve an acceptable result for the year. With losses on merchandising stopped, raffles absolutely pushed to the maximum and increased registration collection what I thought of as an impossible goal actually happened, we had a good financial year and combined with a good on field result makes me happy. This year we made a profit of just over $2700 a great financial result. Robert Watkins Auditor’s Report

To the members of Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated: Scope: We have audited the attached special purpose financial report, comprising the Trading Statement and Accumulated Surplus of Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated for the period 17 October, 1998 to 29 October, 1999. The Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated’s Committee of Management is responsible for the financial report and have determined that the accounting policies used are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Penrith Australian Football Club’s constitution and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. We have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of the Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used are appropriate to the needs of the members. The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the Committee of Management’s financial reporting requirements under the Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated’s constitution. We disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared. Our audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our procedures included examination of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with the cash basis of accounting whereby revenue is recorded when it is received, expenses are recorded when they are paid, and no assets or liabilities, other than cash or bank balances, are recorded. Accounting Standards and other professional reporting requirements (UIG Consensus Views) are not applicable to the cash basis of accounting adopted by the Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated. The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis. Qualification: As is common for organizations of this type, it is not practicable for Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated to maintain an effective system of internal control over subscriptions and other fund raising activities (including merchandise sales) until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, our audit in relation to subscriptions, fund raising and merchandise sales was limited to amounts recorded. Audit Opinion : In our opinion, except for the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have been determined to be necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the cash basis of accounting, as described above, the payments and receipts of Penrith Australian Football Club Incorporated for the period ended 29 October, 1999 and its accumulated surplus balance as at that date. Publicity Report

Year 2000 finally saw me relinquish the publicity job after several years, the job being taken over by Stuart Ayres. We maintained our relationship with the local press, principally our long-time supporter The Western Weekender who published Stuart’s detailed articles every Friday. The Penrith Press articles were written by Jamie Doran and Anthony Harris and it was great to see such well-written pieces accompanied by continually positive headlines. Thanks to Jamie and Anthony for performing this job for the club. The Penrith Star, via sports writer Daniel De Nardi, published several feature articles on the club towards the end of the season, principally ones on David Bradley and Alan Stewart. So we had coverage in all the local press, a major achievement. In addition, I was able to organize a couple of pieces in the AFL (NSW/ACT) Record, thanks to Jill Moss at the AFL for publishing these. The club issued four newsletter during the season, including for the first time a Presentation Night edition. These were well received by the players, supporters and those past players, coaches, life members etc on the club’s mailing list. Finally, this Annual Report will be well distributed and will hopefully be a good means of promoting and advertising the club. In summary, the club’s publicity is up there with the best in Sydney and with Michael Haynes taking over there is no doubt that this situation will continue. Mark Spooner

Mick Walker Awarded Australian Sports Medal

In late breaking news, club legend and stalwart Mick Walker has been awarded an Australian Sports Medal – making two such achievements for the club (after Alan Stewart). Mick joined the Rams in their inaugural year of 1981 and, bar for one season at Campbelltown in 1985, has been with the club ever since. His list of achievements and service to the club is listed below and speaks for itself. Somehow, after being with this club for so long and experiencing both its highs and lows, Mick still manages to maintain his enthusiasm for and dedication to both the Rams and also the game. Everyone should be proud to have someone of Mick’s calibre still so actively involved – congratulations to MW from everyone at Penrith. Obituary

The Penrith Junior Australian Football Club and all those associated with junior AFL in the Penrith area were deeply saddened at the loss of Chris Lehmann on the 8 th June 2000. Chris, who was 47, was the secretary of the Penrith Junior club at the time of his passing. He had been active within the club since his two sons commenced playing in the 1997 season. At nearly every game you would find Chris helping in one way or another – during the actual games you would see him standing between the sticks as the man with the black hat and white coat waving the flags as goal umpire. In 1999 Chris took on the job of secretary of the junior club, a position he held until his passing. In addition to this, he took up umpiring for our association and was instrumental in forming the now large group of junior umpires in the Penrith area. Early in 2000 the Penrith Valley Association needed help in organizing umpires for the fledgling competition and again it was Chris who volunteered to be the Umpires’ Co-Ordinator. As well as being a big part of Australian Football, Chris was involved with the Werrington Little Athletics Club, being Chairman for the past few years. Chris was a devoted husband to Kathy and father to both Tim and Andrew. His presence around the club will be sorely missed. Peter Shaw

Rams Trip Away 2000

After a numbe r of years without an official end of season trip away, two players in 2000 (Cameron Rams Trip Away Honour Roll O’Brien and Greg Masters) took the initiative and

organized an expedition for the Rams. A squad of st Stephen Allen about 30 made the trip to sunny Canberra from the 1 - Stuart Ayres 3rd of September, with a good mix of seniors and Scott Bradley reserves, one Under 18’s representative Michael Brazier (congratulations Nathan Pritchard) and also non and Michael Collister David Cummings past players. The squad was nearly reduced by one Peter Delimitrou when one member cut it so fine that he had to be Clarry Dent picked up opposite the Penrith Gol f Club after the bus Mark Egan had started the journey. (Don’t worry Clarry, we Darren Erwin Michael Haynes won’t tell anyone about it so no-one will ever know Andrew McIntyre who it was). We stayed at the luxurious Gold Creek Chris Marathakis Tourist Resort about 20 minutes out of Canberra’s Chris Martin centre. The two nights were spent out on the town, Greg Masters Cameron O’Brien sampling Canberra’s nightlife, with the Saturday was Dale Perry taken up at Ainslie Australian Football Club watching Jon Pickup the AFL massacre, er Grand Final (much to the Nathan Pritchard disappointment of Peter “The Greek” Delimitrou). Alan Prowse Hard as it may be to believe, everyo ne was so well Mark Spooner Mark Steunenberg behaved on this trip away that both our bus and Simon Stubbs accommodation hosts would certainly have us back I Brad Swarbrick am sure – some of the Rams oldtimers would be Michael Walker shocked!! Thanks to Queenie and Horse for Brett Walsh Jason Ware organizing the event and to Dean from Ourback Robert Watkins Adventue Tours. Everyone had a great time. Ben Weatherhead Mark Spooner
