5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When they had brought their boats to shore, Simon, James and John left everything and followed Jesus. Luke 5:11

They ‘left everything and followed Jesus.’ What a simple statement for such an incredible response! Obviously these three men were just blown away by Jesus, as would many others in the days to come. We too are called to respond to Jesus’ call… few will ‘leave everything’ but we can well ask: what is our response?

t. Valentine’s Day occurs this coming Thursday, February 14. Not much is known about St. Valentine except that he was imprisoned around the year 269 and was mar tyred that same year. It is believed that the romance surrounding this day is By Fr. Jeffrey A Ernst, OFM, due to the practice of St. Valentine to marry Christians during the fierce persecution of Christians in the Third S Century. Christians by law were not allowed to be married by a representative of the Church. St. Valentine is the patron saint of marriage, engaged couples, and romantic love, among several other patronages. The Church removed St. Valentine from the liturgical calendar since not much is known about him. However, he is still listed in the Ro man Martyrology. His existence is attested to by archaeological evidence dating to the third century.

The legacy of St. Valentine, for better or worse, is the cultural romance surrounding his calendar day. Roman tic love was created by God to help the human race per petuate. It is blessed by God and immediately appears in the first book of the Bible: “. . . the man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. And the two of them shall become one flesh” (Genesis 1:28). Jesus quotes this same passage in Matthew 19:5.

Today is World Marriage Sunday, a day which the Church has blessed as a day to celebrate married love, the love of “two becoming one flesh.” The Church holds marriage in high esteem not only because God created and blessed marriage, but because it is the most intimate of human institutions. Most cultures have some kind of marriage. Grant it, many ancient cultures, and even some cultures today, allow polygamy. That kind of marriage is not upheld by the Christian tradition nor by Jesus. A monogamous union is the definition of Christian marriage. That union is upheld by Christianity because it is a sign of the intimate union between Christ and his church. In fact, Paul in his Letter to the Ephesians makes use of the same passage from Genesis as does Jesus in his com parison of marriage to Christ and his , the Church: “’For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’” (5:31). Marriage is extremely important to the Church in and of itself as a consecrated union, and at the same time, because it is a universal manifestation of God’s intimate union with all of hu manity. And so, the Church sets aside this day to proclaim both covenants, that between a bride and groom and that be tween Christ and his Church.

World Wide Marriage Encounter, a national organization for the spiritual renewal of marriage says this: “The idea of cele brating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentine’s Day as ‘We Believe in Marriage Day.’ The event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter's National Leadership. By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to ‘World Mar riage Day,’ designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. World Marriage Day celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year” (World Wide Marriage Encounter website). Let us all celebrate this special day because it brings hope: marriage signifies sacrificial love, new life, and the covenant love between God and his people consummated by Christ on the Cross.
