It is named after the English commander John Talbot who died at the battle of Castillon in 1453. It has been owned by the Cordier family since the early 1900s, and has long been popular in the UK. The 2011 Talbot is soft, silky and wonderfully nuanced on the palate. Much more refined from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2011 has moved toward greater finesse over the last two years. This is a lovely effort. Lifted rose petal and lavender notes add closing nuance. 2011 66 CHATEAU LEOVILLE BARTON, 2EME CRU CLASSE, ST JULIEN £195.00 The Barton family moved to Bordeaux from Ireland in the 1720s and became involved in the business of wine, but it wasn’t until 1821 that they really made their mark with the purchase of Pontet-Langios (now Langoa Barton) and later acquiring a portion of the then huge Léoville estate (which split into Léoville Poyferre, Leoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton). This vintage has pure, spicy fruit in perfect harmony with creamy oak and ripe tannins leading to a dry finish. This tightly structured wine is Claret at its very best, very polished. 2009
