Position Description and Candidate Qualifications

The mission of Maccabi USA (MUSA) is to build Jewish pride through sports. MUSA aspires to play a central role with other outstanding Jewish organizations to build a vibrant American Jewish community inextricably tied to and Jewish people around the world. MUSA’s primary vehicle for accomplishing its objectives is participation in global Jewish sports.

MUSA is the official sponsor of the United States Team that participates in the quadrennial World in Israel (next is 2021). Other quadrennial competitions are the Pan American Maccabi Games (Mexico City in 2019) and European Maccabi Games ( in 2019). MUSA is also affiliated with the JCC Maccabi Games and participates in numerous other sporting events. MUSA was recently certified a multi-sport organization partner of the United States Olympic Committee. MUSA is an adjunct member of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

The Maccabiah Games is the third largest sporting event in the world bringing together 10,000 athletes from 80 different countries in 45 sports. In 2017, MUSA sent 1,131 athletes to the Maccabiah Games in Israel. MUSA now offers a six-day Israel Connect educational and cultural program prior to the quadrennial Games for junior (ages 15-18) and open (usually ages 18-35) category athletes.

MACCABI WORLD UNION

MUSA is one of the 80-member countries comprising Maccabi World Union (MWU), dating from 1895, spanning six continents with more than 450,000 members. MWU utilizes sports to bring Jewish people of all ages closer to and Israel. It is an apolitical non-sectarian Zionist organization. Throughout the year, the six confederations of MWU in Australia, Europe, Israel, Latin America, North America, and South Africa, conduct regional and inter-regional games, providing opportunities for bonding, sharing and meeting other Jewish communities throughout the world.

POSITION SUMMARY

The CEO of Maccabi USA is responsible for the overall successful leadership and management of the organization, implementation of strategic planning efforts, fiscal management, staff supervision, fundraising and revenue-generation, and lay leader and community partnerships. Working with the 35-member Executive Committee and nine- member Officers Group, s/he will design, develop and execute the strategic direction of this organization.

The CEO reports to the MUSA Executive Committee through its President. Currently reporting directly to the CEO is a small staff including a Communications Director; Program Director; Assistant Program Director; Alumni Relations Director; Office Manager; Shaliach; two Games Assistants; and a Director of Development (Northeast Region). The Board of Directors meets in person each December and telephonically three other times during the year. The CEO works most closely with the Executive Committee (EC), the key decision-making body, and an Officers Group (OG) to execute the plans of the organization.

MUSA has been able to balance its budget (four-year cycles of $20-$25 million) but is facing new challenges in the current cycle the new CEO will need to address. The organization also has a separately incorporated endowment fund totaling $11 million.

The new CEO will be a creative and visionary driving force for MUSA to help the organization to grow and evolve in all ways. In addition to playing a leadership role with MWU and its constituent bodies, the CEO will build bridges with American Jewish foundations, Federations, sports organizations, and others committed to building a vibrant Jewish community in the U.S. and helping youth to strengthen their Jewish identity and connections to Israel. The CEO should, ideally, be someone who has led and transformed organizations during stages of growth and development.

The MUSA Executive Committee is seeking a self-motivated and energetic individual who can maintain the achievements of the organization while building on a strong foundation to help MUSA evolve above and beyond its past successes.

OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND KEYS TO SUCCESS

The MUSA Chief Executive Officer will need to:

• Enhance Fundraising: Currently, athletes contribute personally to the cost of participating in the Games, accounting for a significant share of MUSA’s total revenue. However, the new CEO will need to significantly increase the level of funds raised to accomplish its ambitious goals beyond that generated by its sporting events. S/he will need to develop major gifts, annual giving, corporate sponsorship, and other revenue-generating programs, in conjunction with MUSA’s sporting events and beyond.

• Develop and Implement a Strategic Planning Process: MUSA has grown to a point where it needs to examine its past, look at its present, and plan for its future. The CEO will need to have the experience and skill set to effectively lead and perhaps transform the organization through a successful strategic planning effort. MUSA would like to examine the ways it is funded, how lay leadership is developed, the position and role of the organization in the American Jewish community, how to build effective partnerships with other organizations, and how to build its alumni program. • Work in Partnership with Lay Leadership: To carry out its mission, MUSA functions effectively with a large group of committed volunteers, such as team captains, coaches, and managers, as well as the organization’s lay leadership. The CEO must fully understand and respect the role that these volunteers have and will need to forge a close working relationship with the lay leaders, particularly the President. • Have Strong Staff/Volunteer Management Skills: MUSA has a relatively small staff, supplemented by scores of volunteers. The CEO must be able to inspire engagement, participation, and commitment throughout the organization. S/he will need to be able to sustain a productive work environment, delegate where appropriate, develop teamwork and collaboration, and garner support across the entire MUSA community. • Be an Ambassador: The CEO must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills. S/he must be comfortable speaking in public to inspire various constituencies with a vision for communal participation. S/he will need to be a visionary and motivate others to become involved and engaged in the organization, as well as possess the maturity and leadership traits that serve as a role model for the volunteer and professional leadership. • Hiring of Operations Director. Given the goals and mandate that the MUSA leadership foresee for the new CEO s/he will be encouraged to create, hire and supervise an operations director to oversee all operational and administrative functions, allowing the CEO to be externally-focused and work more closely with the MUSA lay leadership. The CEO shall ultimately be responsible and accountable for all aspects of the MUSA organization.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Create an integrated development plan utilizing lay solicitors and direct solicitations by the CEO to expand the base of fundraising to meet growing fundraising goals. Identify, cultivate and solicit high-net-worth prospects and donors, as well as corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, direct marketing, events, and new fundraising programs as established by the Executive Committee. • Facilitate the development of a strategic plan by the Executive Committee to identify the key objectives of MUSA as it evolves. Assure that MUSA makes consistent and timely progress in implementing the strategic plan.

• Continue to cultivate and support a vast volunteer network, including team chairs, coaches, committee chairs, and staff to ensure precise coordination and implementation of projects, programs, and Games. • Forge relationships with the professional and lay leadership of major Jewish organizations and foundations committed to building Jewish identity and cultivating future Jewish leaders. • Be a lynchpin in the relationship between MUSA and Maccabi World Union • Manage MUSA in a fiscally responsible way and ensuring that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work. • Create an environment in which volunteers and staff are motivated to work effectively and in cooperation with one another to achieve the organization’s mission. • Lead, coach, develop and retain the MUSA's high-performance staff • Work closely with Officers Group, the Executive Committee, the Board and other lay leadership to carry out MUSA’s identified goals and objectives • Serve as the principal executive staff representative and spokesperson to religious, government, business, political, media and other organizations and individuals, such as JCCA, USOC, and BBYO.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree with at least ten years of progressively responsible senior executive, management, and operational experience at a complex, multi-faceted organization of relevant size and scope; a graduate degree is a plus. • A passionate advocate for the mission of MUSA and knowledge about global Jewish issues. • Background in athletic fundraising a plus. • A track record of effective major gift cultivation and solicitation. • Be a proven charismatic and inspiring leader for both professional staff and lay leadership. • The CEO will need to be based at MUSA’s headquarters in Philadelphia; modest expenses for relocation will be provided to the successful candidate. • Solid business sense with experience overseeing financial management, including budget development and control. • Strong strategic and analytic skills, as well as the strength of character and, have diplomatic skills. • Knowledge of public relations, marketing, and communications, and an understanding of how to leverage these tools to maximize the organization’s visibility across the country. • Ability to build a team of professional staff and lay leaders, motivate stakeholders and be a credible and compelling spokesperson for the organization. • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills. • Ability to handle multiple assignments and shifting priorities; superior attention to detail with strong follow-through; • Flexible and able to adapt to changing situations

• Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed, and the ability to travel throughout the U.S. and internationally (i.e., UK, Israel, Latin America), which will vary from year to year.
