• Staff: o Car sharing is impractical as leaving times differ on a daily basis, conversely some staff are unsure if other staff live nearby / would be interested in car sharing; o Cost of weekly railway fare / bus ticket across different operators is more expensive than driving; o Lack of bike path, secure bike parking space, or shower and changing facilities; and o Timings of trains do not work well with school day. • Pupils: o Anxiety and other additional needs affecting mobility and independence; o Living in Clifton, not entitled to free school bus pass so have to pay for the school bus, and be picked-up / dropped-off at Cotgrave instead; and o Would have to wear school uniform / carry many items for school whilst cycling. • Parents / Guardians: o Work / childcare commitments in addition to the school run; o Car sharing would be of interest; and

Rev V01 | Copyright © 2021 Curtins Consulting Ltd Page 30

079233 South Nottinghamshire Academy Extension Travel Plan

o No direct / frequent / convenient / affordable public transport options from Cotgrave, West Bridgford, Cropwell Bishop, Newton, Upper Saxondale. • General themes: o No other options due to distance; o Time and weather concerns; o No safe routes to walk or cycle along the roads; o Avoidance of public transport due to COVID-19 pandemic; and o High cost of public transport, and buses can be crowded or unreliable.

• Security for bikes at the school; • Bike sheds are locked if staff arrive later in the afternoon, and there are no keys available, therefore cyclists are unable to park their bicycles securely; • The cycle path along Radcliffe Road is often blocked by overgrown vegetation and is very close to heavy traffic; • The cycle route via Holme Pierrepont is quieter, but the road surface is rutted and dangerous; • Lockers at school so staff and pupils do not have to carry too many items; • Changing the A52 flow of traffic to local non-through route use as it is currently unsafe, polluted, with high flow of lorries and cars; • Parents / guardians to consider allowing pupils to cycle when they are older, due to safety worries; and • Suggestions for a closer bridge over the to cut the commute down.

• Direct school buses from Cotgrave, Upper Saxondale, West Bridgford, East Bridgford, Newton, Princes Place at the end of Shelford Road, Lady Bay, Edwalton, Gamston, Bingham, Lowdham, Beeston, and Calverton; • Higher frequency of school buses and better capacity; • More stops as it is a long walk in the dark to Woodview; • Improved train times / more regular trains and a railcard; • Change of school bus operator;

Rev V01 | Copyright © 2021 Curtins Consulting Ltd Page 31

079233 South Nottinghamshire Academy Extension Travel Plan

• A proper road surface on the road from Holme Pierrepont to Radcliffe (Adbolton Lane / Holme Lane); and • Safer crossing areas / improved footpaths to get to bus stops.

• Request for pupils to be able to access the free school bus from Cotgrave; • Pupils living in Cotgrave are at a disadvantage due to the timing of buses, lack of shelter when waiting for the bus, fewer pickups, buses are also in poor condition and put the safety of pupils at risk; • Suggestions for electric charge points to be installed in the future to encourage staff to go electric and reduce emissions; • Bus would be used if they were more frequent / less crowded or provided by the school; • No buses are provided from Upper Saxondale, and the A52 is not a safe route for pupils to walk; • Car park gates at the school are locked in the afternoon, inconveniencing staff who arrive at the school in the afternoon and have to end up parking on-street; • Access to the school is poor, with the main road overcrowded and poor road surface on Glebe Lane into the school; • Several incidents have occurred where pupils have been dropped off at the wrong stop and this affects their confidence as they are scared to speak up; • Some incidents where parents are concerned with safety of school bus services / speeding on the roads, but the school should also be stricter with pupils travelling on the bus (i.e. bad behaviour when pupils are hanging out windows, littering) which cause a safety concern; • People parking on residential streets (i.e. Cropwell Gardens) causes disturbance to local residents, for example when their driveways are blocked; and • More provision for safe parking is needed along Cropwell Road, as it is very busy.

Raise Awareness

Park and Stride This is a good alternative for those pupils who have to travel to school by car. The idea of the scheme is to set boundaries 5 or 10 minutes away from the school where parents / guardians can park their cars and continue the remainder of the journey on foot with pupils. The scheme is also a useful way for pupils to see how far they can walk from their school in 5 or 10 minutes and to identify those who live within easy walking distance. This can be useful if there is no obvious place which can be used to park and stride.
