GRAMMAR

In this lesson, we'll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you are looking for. Previously we introduced "Is there a place near here?" and "Where is there a

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #31 - ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS IN HINDI 4 (something)?" But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. In this lesson, we're going to work on understanding what someone tells us. We'll go over basic directions. First, we have "go straight."

In Hindi, "go straight" is siiDHe jaao. First, we have siiDHe, which means "straight," and the word jaao, which means "you go" following siiDHe jaao. Literally, this means "go straight."

Let's look at the next expression to help us turn. Let's cover "turn right," which in Hindi is Daahine muden. The first word is दाएँ, Dahine "right." We follow this with muden, which comes from the verb mudana, meaning "to turn." So all together, we have Dahine muden.

Now let's work on "turn left." In Hindi, "turn left" is baayen muden. Let's break down this word and hear it one more time baayen muden. Let's try now with "Turn right at the traffic light." which in Hindi is traefic laits par Daahine muden.

Before Daahine muden "turn right," which we have just seen, you have traefic laits par "at the traffic light." First, you have traefic, the same as the English "traffic." Next is laits, meaning "lights," followed by par, which in English is "at the."

"It's on the right" in Hindi is Daahine hai. The first word Daahine means "right." Finally, we have hai, meaning "is." So all together, we have Daahine hai.

"It's on the left" in Hindi is baayen hai. The only difference is the word baayen in place of Dahine.

GRAMMAR

In today's lesson, we'll introduce a phrase that will surely come in handy for capturing your memories on film or memory card. is full of beautiful scenery. Obviously, you will take many pictures of landscapes and monuments. However, I have no doubts that in some moments you'll want to be in the picture or have everyone in your party. Therefore, there are times when the question "Can you take our/my picture?" will be invaluable!

In Hindi, "Can you take our picture?" is kyaa aap hamaarii Tasviir KHiinCH sakTe hain? The first words, kyaa aap, mean "can you," used in the formal way of speech. Next is hamaarii, which means "our." Next is Tasviir, which in English is "picture." This is followed by KHiinCH sakTe hain? which literally means "take our" in English. However, in this case we translate it as "take our (picture)." So to recap here, we have kyaa aap hamaari Tasviir KHiinCH sakTe hain? Literally, this means "Can you take us a picture?"

If you are on your own and you want to ask "Can you take my picture?" in Hindi, you just need to replace hamaari with merii, so you would have kyaa aap merii Tasviir KHiinCH sakTe hain?

Quick Tip 2

When you are in India, you will likely want to keep the beautiful scenery on film, whether it is a video camera or digital. So make sure your battery is charged. Be careful not to leave your machine in the sun too! India gets very hot in summer; sometimes the hottest in the world (especially in the afternoon), so mechanical mishaps or burns are common. That's why today we will cover some phrases related to the one we saw in the previous lesson: "Can you take my picture?" kyaa aap merii Tasviir KHiinCH sakTe hain?

Now you would like to ask for permission. "Can I take your picture?" in Hindi is kya main apkii Tasviir nikaal sakTa hoon?

The first words, kya main, mean "can I." In Hindi, aapkii is formal for "your," and Tasviir is a feminine noun, so aapka (formal "your") becomes aapkii, which follows next. Tasviir, which means "picture" is next. The verb nikaal sakTaa hoon means "to take" or "take out." So to recap here, we have kyaa main aapkii Tasviir nikaal sakTaa hoon? Literally, this means "Can I take a picture of you?"

If you are able to socialize immediately, and you feel Indian people can all be like friends, or even if you simply meet some young people, you can use kya main tumharii Tasviir nikaal sakTaa hoon? "Can I take your picture?" In this sentence, what has changed is the Tumhaari in place of aapkii (informal). All together, we have kya main Tumharii Tasviir nikaal sakTa hoon?

What if you are in a museum, an art gallery, or a shop, and you want to try to ask "Can I take a picture here?" In Hindi, this is kyaa main yahaan Tasviir nikaal sakTa hoon? The only difference is yahaan instead of aapki meaning "here." So all together, we have Kyaa main yahaan Tasviir nikaal sakTa hoon?

So let's start this new lesson.

In Hindi, "Can you write it down please?" is Kyaa aap ise liKH sakTe hain? The first words, kyaa aap, mean "can you." It is a formal way to say "you," followed by ise, which means "it." Once you have the written words, you may find that you have no idea how to pronounce them. In Hindi, "How do you pronounce this?" is ise kaise uCHHarTe hain? You can say this while pointing at the word. The first word, ise, means "this." Literally, this means "How is this pronounced?"

It might happen that people are not carrying any piece of paper or a pen. So before asking Kyaa aap ise liKH sakTe hain? you might try asking aapke paas kaagaz aur pain hai? "Do you have paper and pen The first words, aapke paas, mean "do you have," and it is the second person plural or formal form of the pronoun aap "you". GRAMMAR

In the previous lessons, we introduced you to some phrases you can use when in India, and this is the last lesson of the series we dedicated to learning from people around you. Today we are going to cover "How do you read this?"

In Hindi, "How do you read this?" is yah kaise paDHTe hain? The first word, yah, means "this." Followed by kaise, which means "how." Next, we have paDHTe, which in English literally means "read." The second person form of the verb paDHna, which means "to read," is

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #36 - READ HINDI INSTANTLY - NO KNOWLEDGE OF HINDI REQUIRED 3 paDHTe. Finally, here we have hain, which means "is." And all together, we have Yah kaise paDHTe hain? Literally, this means "How is this read?"

If you are pointing at something, probably in a book, a newspaper, or simply a street sign, you might also like to ask, "How do you pronounce this?" Yah kaise uCHCHaraN karTe hain? The Hindi word for "this" is yah, and kaise means "how." Next is uCHCHaraN, the verb meaning " to pronounce." karTe hain is, as we already know, "to do."

After you have learned the reading and pronunciation, you will probably want to know about the meaning. So why don't you try to ask kya maTlab? "What does it mean?" The first word, kya, means "what." Next, we have maTlab, which in English means "means." So all together, we have kya maTlab? Literally, this means "What does it mean?"

Quick Tip 1

Hindi is a phonetic language, so writing is almost the same as you speak. That is why some letters have the same pronunciation and some are quite different from English. As Hindi has its own alphabet, it also has a different order and different vowels.

For example, the pronunciation of the vowel -i is the same in all words such as:

1. billii "cat"

2. Diyaa "lamp"

3. piinaa "to drink"

Quick Tip 2

Not only pronouncing and reading the Hindi alphabet can be a challenge, but also writing it! The writing system has consonants, vowels, and matras. Hindi, like English, has a space after each word and words are collections of consonants, vowels, and matras. But once you are able to make Hindi words using the Hindi alphabet, it will be a fun to read Hindi and many

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #37 - PLACES TO STAY AND THE HINDI YOU NEED TO KNOW 3 In today's lesson, we'll help you check-in! In India, there are hotels, bed and breakfasts, hostels, and some of the most beautiful hotels at Goa beach. But let's not waste time. Let's jump right into today's lesson!

In India, when you get to a hotel and you want to check-in, you can use two possible phrases. If you have already booked the room, and you want to say "I have a reservation" in Hindi, it is mera rijarveSHan hai. The first word, mera, is the masculine form of "my." Next, we have rijarveSHan, which is the same as the English "reservation." The last word, hai, means "is." So all together, we have mera rijarveSHan hai. This means "I have a reservation."

If you have not booked the room yet, the phrase "I would like a room" in Hindi is muJHe ek kamraa CHahiye. The first word, muJHe, means "I would like." Let's break them down by syllable: mu-JHe. Then we have ek "a" or "one", which we have seen, and then kamraa "room". So all together, we have MuJHe ek kamraa CHahiye, which literally means "I would like a room."

Afterward, they will most likely ask you "Your name please." In Hindi, this is aapkaa naam. The first word, aapkaa, is "your," which we have already learned in previous lessons and which we know by now is a formal or plural "your." Then you have naam, which means "name."

You might also be asked "Can you spell your name?" In Hindi, this is kyaa aap naam spel kar sakTe hain? The first words, kyaa aap, mean "will you" (formal or plural). Then we have naam "name". Finally, we have the word for "can spell" spel kar sakTe hain.

GRAMMAR

In today's lesson, we'll introduce to you some more useful phrases for hotels and the like. The first phrase is "What time is checkout?" In Hindi, this is kyaa samay hai hotal CHHodne kaa.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #38 - THE HOTEL CHECK-IN IS ONLY HALF THE BATTLE IN INDIA 3 As you can see, "checkout" is one more word we have adopted into our vocabulary, and we often use it very easily. The first word, kyaa, means "what" in Hindi. Then you have samay hai, which means "is the time." After that, you have hotal, which is the same as "hotel." Following that, we have CHHodne kaa. This literally means "to leave," and it is from the verb CHHodnaa. So to recap here, we have kya samay hai hotal CHHodne kaa. Literally, this means "What time must we check out?"

Let's look at some words you could need while staying in a hotel, because there will be times when you need more of certain things. Here are a few more words that might come in handy.

English Hindi

towel Tauliyaa

toothbrush tooTHbraSH

toothpaste tooTHpest

shampoo SHaimpoo

soap saabun

Let's try to ask "Can I have some more soap?" This is THoda aur saabun mil sakTa hai? The first word is THoda aur, and it means "some more." Next, you have the thing you are looking for, saabun "soap". Then you have mil sakTa, which literally means "can I have" or "can I get." Finally, you have hai, meaning "is." So all together, we have THoda aur saabun mil sakTa hai? This literally means "Can I have some more soap?"

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #39 - USING THE POST OFFICE IN INDIA PART 1 3 GRAMMAR

My dear listeners, today we're going to take a trip to the post office. Now, the "post office" in India is daak GHar, the corporate color is red, and the post box color is red too.

Today, we're going to work on getting your postcards, letters, and packages home. The expression we need to accomplish this is "I'd like to send this to...," and then the desired destination. For today's lesson, we'll use Italy.

In Hindi, "I would like to send this to Italy" is muJHe yah itlii BHejna hai. The first words, muJHe yah mean "I would like." Next, we have the name of the city you are sending it to, itlii. Next is BHejnaa hai, which in English is "to send." Now all together, we have muJHe yah italii BHejnaa hai. Literally, this means "I would like to send this to Italy." Let's look at the other words. We were talking about packages, letters, and postcards, so let's try to send a postcard!

"Postcard" in Hindi is post-kaard. "I would like to send this postcard to Italy" in Hindi is muJHe yah post-kaard itlii BHejna hai. Notice the position of yah post-kaard, which means "this postcard."

Now let's try "letter," which in Hindi is paTra. "I would like to send this letter to Italy" in Hindi is muJHe yah paTra itlii BHejna hai. As you can notice, we substitute the word for "card" post- kaard, which is feminine, with the word for "letter" PaTr, which is a masculine noun.

Now let's try to send a package. In Hindi, "I would like to send this package to Italy" is muJHe yah parsal itlii BHejnaa hai. "Package" in Hindi is parsal. So all together, we have muJHe yah parsal itlii BHejnaa hai.

Now the package requires a closer look, which we'll do in the next lesson.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Quick Tip 1

If you already have your letter or your postcards ready for sending, you don't need to look for a post office. You just need to find a mailbox or a letterbox, which in India you can recognize by its red color. You find them throughout neighborhoods all over the country.

When sending a package though, you will probably have to explain what's in the package. They may even ask you "What's in the package?" In Hindi, this is Is parsal mein kyaa hai? The first word, is, means "this." Next is parsal mein, which is "in package." Next is kyaa, which

Another way in which they can ask you "What's in the package," is with is parsal ke anDar kyaa hai? This translates as "What is inside the package?" The first word, is, means "this." Next is parsal which is "package." Next we have ke anDar, meaning "inside." Next is kyaa "what", and then you have hai "is". All together, we have, is parsal ke anDar kyaa hai? This literally means "What contains to package?" is parsal ke anDar kyaa hai?

"Stamps" in India are known as टकट tikat. Buying stamps in India is very simple. They sell normal stamps at stationery stores or nearby post offices. So saying muJHe kuCH tikat CHahiyen "I would like some stamps," is the simplest and most common way of asking for them. Remembering your numbers comes in handy here, as they will most likely ask you how many you want, to which your reply should be das. It's as easy as that!

Quick Tip 2

In India, if you do not paste sufficient stamps or the value of the stamps pasted is less than required, then the person who is receiving has to pay a fine. Otherwise the parcel will come back to the sender!

Where can I exchange money?

GRAMMAR

Exchanging money in India is quite convenient. One can exchange money at airports, banks, or withdraw money from an ATM. Rates applied when withdrawing money from an ATM are likely to be quite good. However, when using an ATM, it is advisable to make one large withdrawal as both the local bank and your home bank may charge fees. So first things first, let's find a location that will exchange money.

First, let's review some previous phrases and patterns we've already covered.

In Hindi, "Is there an ATM near here?" is kya yahaan paas mein ae tii em hai?

Now to ask for a bank, we can just replace the word for ATM with the word for bank, and the phrase works just fine. "Is there a bank near here?" is kya yahaan paas mein benk hai. The only thing that changes is the place you are looking for. The remaining sentence is regardless of whether the noun is masculine or feminine.

For times when there is neither a bank nor an ATM, you can ask "Where can I exchange currency?" In Hindi, this is karansii exCHenj kahaan kar sakTe hain? It is common to say karansii exCHenj in India as "currency exchange" most of the time. The first words, karansii exCHenj, are the same as the English "currency exchange." Next is kahaan, meaning "where." Then we have kar sakTe, which in English is "can do." Then you have hain "is". All

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #41 - A GUIDE TO FOREIGN EXCHANGE IN INDIA 5 together, we have karansii exCHenj kahaan kar sakTe hai?? Literally, this means "Where can I change money?"

Exchanging currency is pretty straightforward. You need to fill out some forms, and then present the amount you want exchanged. One extremely useful phrase is "Smaller denominations please." It's usually beneficial to have smaller amounts of currency on you for paying for the bus fare, taxi fare, and so on.

In Hindi, "Smaller denominations please" is kripya CHote mulyavarg. The first word, kripya, means "please." Next we have CHote, meaning "small." Finally, you have mulyavarg "denominations." All together, we have kripya CHote mulyavarg. In English, this means "In small denomination please."

Finally, you can also use the phrase "Break this please" to indicate you would like smaller amounts of the currency. In Hindi, "Break this please" is Kripya CHutte Diijiye? The first word, kripya, means "please" and is formal. Next, we have CHutte, which literally translates in English as "small money." Next is Diijiye "give". All together, we have kripya CHutte Diijiye? Literally, this means "Can you change them?"

Quick Tip 1

When Indians go out for dinner, they always pay cash-NO checks and credit cards! And they always have enough money to pay the bill for their company, too. So make sure you get to the exchange office as soon as possible!

Quick Tip 2

Money exchange in India can also be done at local moneychangers, and you can bargain for the rate as well! Indian currency has the units of rupee and paisa. Please remember one hundred paisa is equal to one rupee. You can find paper money in rupees 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 denominations. Rupees 1, 2, and 5 are found as coins.

In recent years, you can use your cell phone when you get to India, but you have to pay very expensive roaming charges. So if you feel like saving your pennies, the good old ways work like a charm.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #42 - BUYING PHONE CARDS IN INDIA 3 Before asking for a phone card, you may want to find out if they have the cards. In Hindi, "Do you have telephone cards?" is Kyaa aapke paas teliifon kard hai? The first words, kya aapke paas, means "do you have." Next, we have the Hindi noun for "cards" teliifon kard. And then you have hai "is". All together, we have Kyaa aapke paas teliifon kard hai? Literally, this means "Do you have cards for phoning?"

The answer to this will be "yes" haan or "no" nahi. In the case that they have the cards, you'll want to ask for one of the denominations we talked about.

Let's start with a hundred-Rupee card. In Hindi, "A hundred-Rupee telephone card, please" is Kripya sau rupae kaa teliifon kard Diijiye The first word, kripya, means "please." Next is so rupae ka, meaning "one hundred rupees." This is followed by teliifon kard, meaning "telephone card," which is a masculine noun. After this, you have Diijiye, which translates to "give." It comes from the verb Dena, meaning "to give."

Literally, this means "A phone card of one hundred rupees please."

For a two hundred rupees card, you just have to change the value in this way: kripya Do sau rupae ka teliifon kard Diijiye.

If you are looking for a payphone, you will have to ask kyaa yahaan paas mein pefon hai? This means "Is there a payphone near here?" The first word, kyaa, means "is there." Then, something you already learned in Survival Phrases number 30, yahaan paas mein, which translates to "here near" in English. Then we have the word for pefon, which is the same as "payphone" in English. All together, we have kyaa yahaan paas mein pefon hai? In English, this means "Is there a phone booth near here?"

GRAMMAR HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #47 - SURVIVAL FOR VEGETARIANS IN INDIA 3 Today's lesson is not only for all of the vegetarians out there, but it's also for anyone with an aversion to a particular food! There are many reasons a person won't eat a particular food and there may be instances when communicating this is necessary. Today, we'll go over some phrases to make sure you don't get any unwanted surprises on the plate.

In Hindi, "I am vegetarian" is main shaakaahaarii hoon The first word main means, "I." Next, we have shaakaaharii, which in English is, "vegetarian." And hoon means, "am." To recap here, we have Main shaakaahaarii hoon. Literally, this means, "Am vegetarian."

Another way you can communicate that you don't eat a particular food is by saying just that!

In Hindi, "I don't eat meat" is main maans nahiin khaaTa hoon The first word main means, "I." maans, the next word, means, "don't." Next, we have khaaTa, which in English is, "eat." And next is hoon, meaning, "am." All together, we have main maans nahiin khaaTa hoon. Literally, this means, "I don't eat meat."

We can use this sentence pattern for other kinds of food by simply changing just one word! So let's look at some other possibilities. Let's try "cheese," which in Hindi is paneer. Now let's try the phrase with this word. "I don't eat cheese" in Hindi is main Paneer nahiin khaaTa hoon.

If you want to make sure some food doesn't have an ingredient you can't or you don't want to eat, you should simply ask about it. For example, if you want to make sure a meal doesn't have meat, you should ask, isme maans hai? The first word isme means, "this," then you have maans, which means, "meat." Finally, we have hai, which we already know means, "is."

GRAMMAR

We hope that in this lesson we'll introduce to you some phrases that you won't have to use. While the threat of physical violence is not prevalent, when traveling to India you should always be careful. In addition, this phrase is not limited to threatening situations, but you can also use it in the unfortunate event that you or someone around you is in the need of immediate assistance. Today, we'll learn how to call for help.

Even if everyone wishes nothing bad or dangerous to happen while on holiday in India, it's better if you know some important useful phrases to use in case of an emergency.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #48 - HINDI FOR GETTING HELP IN INDIA 3 In Hindi, "Help!" is maDaD! Literally, this means, "Help."

There is another way to call for help and it's maDaD karo! Literally, this means, "Help me!"

If you need to call the police, shout, pulis! Literally, this means, "Police!"

The phone number for the police in India is 100. You can easily call it from a public phone or a cell phone. Make sure to rent a mobile phone when you're in India, otherwise make sure that in an emergency you know how to ask for a public phone.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Quick Tip 1

Emergency numbers for India:

Medical: 102,108,104

Police: 100

Fire: 101

These numbers are very short and could be accessed from any phone in the country.

You must be cautious at all times in public places because cases of pocket thefts are common!

Quick Tip 2

You can find cows and dogs wondering on the street. Indian pedestrians know that they must never venture in front of a moving vehicle and drivers expect that the pedestrian will find a way to get out of their way, so they won't even slow down. This can be dangerous for tourists who are accustomed to vehicles slowing down and stopping when pedestrians cross the street. Extra caution is advised when crossing a busy street because pedestrian crossing marks are completely invisible to Indian drivers.

In today's lesson, we'll introduce to you some phrases you will find useful in case you need

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #49 - USING HINDI TO GET MEDICAL HELP 3 medical assistance. When traveling, sometimes the body takes a little time to adjust and the immune system is no different. Today, we'll go over some phrases that will help get you to a location where you can get medical assistance. We'll start with the phrase, "Please take me to the hospital."

In Hindi, "Please take me to the hospital" is Kripaya, mujhe aspatal le jaie. The first word is kripya and you know it very well. It means, "please." Next, we have mujhe, which in English, it literally means, "me." Next is aspaTaal "hosptal". To recap here, we have aspaTaal, aspaTaal. Next is le jaiye. Literally, this means, "bring me." All together, we have kripya, mujhe aspaTaal le jaiye. Literally, this means, "Please, take me to the hospital."

If you would like someone to take you to visit a doctor, you can use the following phrase. "Please take me to the doctor," which is kripya, daktar ke paas le jaiye. As you can see, this phrase is very similar to the previous one. You only have to change daktar ke pas in place of aspaTaal.

If things aren't too bad, perhaps you only need to get to a pharmacy. In Hindi, "I need a pharmacy" is mujhe Dava ki Dukaan chahiye. The first word is mujhe, meaning, "I need." Next, we have Dava ki Dukaan, which is the equivalent of "pharmacy" in English. Finally, you have chaahiye, which means "need". All together, we have mujhe Dava ki Dukaan chahiye. Literally, this means, "I need to go to a pharmacy." Be careful because for some medicines you might need the medical prescription. So make sure to see a doctor who will give you the right prescription in order to buy medicines at the pharmacy.

Then you might be asked, Priskripsan hai? "Do you have the medical prescription?"

India can get very hot during the summer. It is common for the thermometer to hover around 45° C for days and even to reach 47° (about 112° F) often. Planning outdoor activities such as hiking or visiting open-air archaeological sites during heat waves can be dangerous. During days when heat waves settle over the land, it is essential to limit outdoor activities and to drink plenty of water.

Once you are in the pharmacy, you will need to explain how you feel in order to let the pharmacist give you the right medicines. In today's lesson, we'll work on explaining symptoms so you can get the proper treatment and any medicine you may need.

Let's try to make a list of all the possible things you might need.

In Hindi, "cold medicine" is sarDii ki Dava.

"A cold medicine please," in Hindi, is ek sarDii ki Dava, kripya.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #50 - EXPLAINING SYMPTOMS IN HINDI 3 The first word ek means, "one." Then you have sarDii ki, which means, "cold." Next, we have ki, the preposition "for." Finally, we have Dava "medicine." Lastly, we have kripya "please." All together, we have ek sarDii ki Dava, kripya, which literally means, "A medicine for the cold please."

Let's see how to explain your symptoms.

In Hindi, "I have a headache" is sir DarD hai. The first word sir means, "head." Next, we have DarD, which literally means, "aching," or in other words, "a headache" is sir dard and hai means, "is." All together, we have sir DarD hai. Literally, this means, "I have pain of head," and in this case we translate it as, "I have a headache."

A different way to say you are in pain, for example, your stomach, is pet DarD hai. This is a very straightforward sentence. It's the same as previously. The only change is pet in place of sar. pet means, "stomach."

Quick Tip 1

Insect bites, especially mosquito bites, are the most common health problem we have encountered. While the bites themselves pose no danger, they can be uncomfortable for children and adults alike. In certain areas of India, it is impossible to be outdoors in early evening when mosquitoes are most active. In rainy seasons, insect repellent is a good way to save you from flying insects.

Quick Tip 2

Most of the doctors understand English and in case you fall very sick, it is better to visit a local doctor. You can ask the hotel authorities or the people at whose house you are staying to refer a good doctor to you! Keep in handy medicines for vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, cold, etc all the time you travel.

GRAMMAR

In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will be essential for those of you who are allergic to something. Letting other people know about your allergy is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today's phrase, we'll go over "I'm allergic to something."

To start, we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous so let's start from there.

In Hindi "I am allergic to peanuts" is mujhe mungfali se elarjii hai. The first word mujhe means, "I have." Next is mungfali means "peanuts." next is se which means "from" and next is elarjii, which in English is "allergy," and next is hai which means "is". All together, we have mujhe mungfali se elarjii hai. Literally, this means, "I am allergic to the peanuts."

Now let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try shrimp. The Hindi word for shrimp is

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #51 - LEARN TO SAY YOUR ALLERGIES IN HINDI 4 (झींगा) jhinga. Therefore, "I am allergic to shrimp" is mujhe zinga se elarjii hai. Notice that the only thing that changes here is zinga in place of mungfali, while the rest is the same.

Let's try with eggs, which in Hindi are anda; "I am allergic to eggs" is mujhe ande se elarjii hai.

Let's try with milk, which in Hindi is Doodh; "I am allergic to milk" is mujhe Doodh se elarjii hai.

In case you have to go to the doctor or to the hospital during your trip to India, you might be asked about your conditions. If you have allergies, make sure to get the right treatment.

In Hindi, "Do you have any allergies?" is kya apako koi elarjii hai? The first word kya is introgative and kya apako means "do you have?" Next is koi which in English is "any" next is elarjii which in English is "allergy." This word is borrowed from English so it has similar pronunciation as English. And next is hai which is "is". All together, we have kya apko koi elarjii hai? This literally means, "Do you have any allergy?"

In Hindi, "I am having an allergic reaction" is mujhe elarjii ki praTikriya hai. The first word mujhe means, "I have." Next we have elarjii, which in English is "allergy" and next is ki which is same as "'s" or same as "allergies" and it is for feminine nouns. Then you have hai, which means "is.." All together, we have mujhe elarjii ki praTikriya hai. Literally, this means, "I have an allergic reaction."

GRAMMAR

Whatever the reason for travelling to India, you won't leave the country without having met people. Therefore, it's necessary to learn how to introduce yourself and how to respond to people introducing themselves.

The best way to introduce ourselves is maybe by reviewing the parts of a conversation. As you know, we have a polite version, the one where we use the formal level of speech, and another one in which we use the informal level.

Let's cover the formal version first.

In Hindi, "How do you do?" is Aap kaise hai? The first word aap means, "you" formal version. Next kaise means "how." Kaise. Next, we have hai , which in English literally means, "is" or "are". All together, we have Aap kaise hai? This literally means, "How do you do?"

After Aap kaise hai, we will cover "My name is...," and we will use my name this time. Therefore, "My name is Maria" is Mera nam Maria hai. The first word mera means, "my," and we follow it with nam, which in English is "name." na-m, nam. To recap here, we have mera nam, which literally means, "my name" Then you have the name, in this case Maria. And next is hai means "is." All together, we have Mera nam Maria hai, which literally means, "My name is Maria."

After that, we will cover "Nice to meet you," which in Hindi is Aapse milkar achcha laga. The first word aapse means "to you" formal next is milkar which in English is "to meet" and next is achcha, which literally means, "Pleasure." Let us see it one more time: achcha a-chcha. And next is laga which in English is "to feel" so altogether achcha laga means "feel nice." All together, we have Aapse milkar achcha laga, which literally means, "Nice to meet you."

Let's look over the informal level now. It's very straightforward because you need to change just a few things.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #52 - INTRODUCING YOURSELF IN HINDI 4 Aap kaise hai "How do you do?" becomes Ti kanis since you are now using the second person singular in place of the third person plural of the formal level. The second part doesn't change at all. In fact, we also have Mera nam Maria hai in the informal level meaning, "My name is Maria."

In place of Aapse milkar achcha laga "nice to meet you" in the informal level, instead we have Harika poli! Harika means, "pleasure," and as we know poli means, "much/a lot." This is simple and useful! Harika poli, harika poli.

Quick Tip 1

Simple things such as greeting someone in the morning with a namaste instead of "good morning," or introducing yourself in the native language, will go a long way in making friends with your hosts. In addition, enquiring about words and their meaning is an excellent way to carry a conversation for hours between people who don't share a common language.

Quick Tip 2

The existence of many different dialects does not prevent one Indian from communicating and understanding with another in a comfortable manner. In fact, every Hindi jokes about how impossible it would be for a foreigner to learn Hindi in its totality—referring to the multitude of names for identical things, and the different dialects.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #53 - ESSENTIAL HINDI FOR RENTING A CAR 4 In Hindi, "I would like to rent a car" is Muze ek kar kirae par chahie. The first word muze is one of the words we already covered in some previous lessons and it means, "I would like." Next, we have ek kar, which in English is "one car" next is kirae par which means "on rent." kirae par here kirae means "rent" and par means "on" . next is chahie means "want" All together, we have Muze ek kar kirae par chahie. Literally, this means, "I would like to rent a car."

Now we'll look at the words for other vehicles to open up your transportation options. In Hindi, the word for scooter or moped is skutar. The phrase "I would like to rent a scooter/moped" is Muze ek skutar kirae par chahie.

"Motorbike" in Hindi is motorsaikil. The phrase "I would like to rent a motorbike" is Muze ek motorsaikil kirae par chahie.

If you're renting something, it's also important to know when you must return it! Therefore, we're giving you a phrase you can use to make sure you return it on time.

In Hindi, "When must I return it?" is Kab loutana hai? The first word kab means, "when." Next, we have lautana, which in English is "return." Then we have hai, which means, "is." All together, we have Kab loutana hai? Literally, this means, "when must I return it?

Finally, you may want to return it at a different location. In India "Can I return it at (location)?" is (location) me lauta sakata/sakati hoo? Let's imagine you want to return it in Delhi. We should have Kya Delhi me lauta sakata/sakati hoo? The first word kya means introgative "is" next is location Delhi next is me which in English is "at" louta means "to return" it comes from the verb lautana means to return next is sakata for male and sakati for female , "can I." Then we have hoo, which comes from hai for single person and in English is "is." All together, we have Kya Delhi me lauta sakata/sakati hu?

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #54 - AVOID GETTING CAUGHT IN THE RAIN WITH HINDI WEATHER VOCABULARY 4 Whether or not the weather will cooperate is an important issue on which many plans are made and canceled. It can happen sometimes that you are planning a long trip and you want to be sure that your walks and your tours around Indian cities will be safe and dry! In this lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will help you finalize your plans if they depend on the weather.

In Hindi, "what will the weather be tomorrow?" is Kal mausam kaisa hoga? The first word kal means, "tomorrow" kal, next is mausam which in English is "weather" Next is kaisa which in english is "how." Next, we have hoga, which in English is "will be." All together, we have Kal mausam kaisa hoga? Literally this means, "what weather are we going to have tomorrow." We translate it as "what will the weather be tomorrow?"

Let's go over the possible answers. In Hindi, "It will rain" is Baris hogi. "It will snow" is Barf padegi. "It will be sunny" is Dhup hogi. The first word dhup means "sunny" and it's a feminine noun so we have hogi which in English is "will be". All together, we have dhup hogi, which literally means, "there will be sun," and we translate it as "it will be sunny."

"It will be windy" is Vatmay hoga. The first word vatamay means, "windy" it is adjective and masculine so we use hoga Literally, this means, "there will be wind." We translate it as "it will be windy."

In case you're somewhere where the weather can change very quickly, you can ask, "What will the weather be today?" Aaj mausam kaisa hai? As you can see, we have the same pattern of the phrase we have previously seen. Mausam kaisa hai literally means, "What weather do we have?" Then we have aaj "today" in place of kal "tomorrow". This literally means, "What weather do we have today?" We translate this as "what will the weather be today?"

GRAMMAR

No matter where you are, you will always have some place to be! In this lesson, we'll look at a question that will give you the tools to ask how much time you have left to get there. We'll also give you the tools to understand the answer!

In Hindi, "What time is it?" is kya samay hai? The first word means, "what." Next, we have samay, which in English is "time." Then we have hai, which literally means, "is." All together, we have kya samay hai? Literally, this means, "What time is it?"

Let's go over hours here. "Hours" in Hindi is GHanta, however, you will never hear this word while asking for the time. When talking about (hours) o'clock you just have to say the number and that's it.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #55 - BE ON TIME WITH THIS HINDI PHRASE 4 1 o'clock - ek baje

2 o'clock - Do baje

3 o'clock - Tiin baje

4 o'clock - CHaar baje

5 o'clock - paanCH baje

6 o'clock - CHHe baje

7 o'clock - saaT baje

8 o'clock - aaTH baje

9 o'clock - nau baje

10 o'clock - Das baje

11 o'clock - gyaarah baje

12 o'clock - baarah baje

Let's cover how to answer the question kya samay hai in Hindi now! First, you answer time and then the baje. Let's try with six o'clock. "It's six o'clock" in Hindi is CHHe baje hain. The first word CHHe means, "six" Then you have the word "baje" which comes from the verb bajna , which is used with reference to time, and next is hai which is "is". All together, we have CHHe baje hain.

Let's go over minutes now. "Minutes" in Hindi is minat. In Hindi, first you say the number for "hours" followed by the conjunction bajkar, comes from the verb bajana and then the number for "minutes" for the minutes "past" the hour. For the minutes "to" the hour, you use minat.

For example, "It's 3:20" in Hindi is Tiin bajkar biis minat. "It's 5:55" in Hindi is paanCH bajkar paCHpan minat. Here we are literally saying "five hours fifty fiv minutes". "Its 8:34" in Hindi is aaTH bajkar CHaunTTiis minat.

Even Hindi has words for the set times of the day:

"Midday" in Hindi is Dopahar.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #55 - BE ON TIME WITH THIS HINDI PHRASE 5 "Midnight" is aadhi raaT.

Lastly, "quarter" in Hindi is savaa. Therefore, "It's 2:15" in Hindi can also be Savaa Do.

In Hindi, "It's delicious" is Yah swadisht hai. The first word yah means, "it's." Next, we have swadisht, which in English is "delicious." and next is "hai" which means "is" To recap, when describing something in Hindi, you use the verb "to be," third person singular is.

Now let's go over some other adjectives that you can use with the pattern we just introduced. Let's try hot, as in spicy. In Hindi "It's hot" is Yah garm hai. The word for "hot" is garm.

If you are referring to the temperature instead, "it's hot" in Hindi is Yah garam hai. The word for "hot" in this case is zesto. The opposite is Yah garam hai. Therefore, the word for "cold" in Hindi is thanda.

Be careful! In Hindi, we use the same pattern for temperature and weather. If you are referring to the weather in Hindi, "it's hot" is mausam garam hai. Literally, this means, "weather is hot." Therefore, "it's cold" in Hindi would be mausam thanda hai. Literally, this means, "weather is cold."

In Hindi, "it's far" is yah door hai. The word for "far" is door. The opposite is "it's near." yah pas hai. The word for "near" is paas.

Children run around everywhere, ladies wear colorful outfits, incense smoke mixes with the aroma of tasty dishes, small cats and dogs under tables search for scraps, and much curd-lassi and juice flows happily from glass to mouth.

Quick Tip 2

On the rural roads in India, you will see farmer ladies walking to farms taking lunch for their husbands in the morning, and, in evening, farmers returning from the farms riding bullock carts. GRAMMAR

In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase you will be able to use in all those moments in which you are introducing yourself or even your friends and you are talking about your own country and the place you come from.

First, let's review how to introduce ourselves. In Hindi, "My name is Michael" is Mera nam Michael hai. Here we have Mera, which means, "my" and nam, which means, "name." and next is hai which means "is." To recap, we have Mera nam Michael hai.

Now let's go and cover how to say where you're from! In Hindi, "I'm American" is Mai amarikan hoo. The first word mai means, "I." Next, we have amarikan, which in English is "American." And hoo means "am." All together, we have mai amarikan hoo, meaning, "I am American."

In Hindi, "I'm Spanish" is Mai spenish hoo. As you can see, the verb doesn't change. You always have hoo "am." Then the only thing that changes is the nationality. Therefore, you have spenish in place of amarikan.

This phrase is the way you answer the question, Aap kaha se ae ho? In English, this means, "where do you come from?" The first word aap means, "you." Then you have kaha , which in English is "where." Next is se which means "from" To recap here we have kaha se which literally means, "from where." Now let's look at the next word aae, which means, "come" and next is ho means "are." All together, we have Aap kaha se ae ho? This literally means, "where do you come from?"

The adjective for nationality do not change according to the gender.

If you are introducing a friend to someone, the verb changes. Therefore, "He's American" in Hindi is Yah amarikan hai. Hoo changes to hai as hoo is used in first person only in case of third person hoo becomes hai

If you want to see the inside of a Hindi temple, you must be properly dressed. It's considered rude to enter a temple if your shoulders and knees aren't covered. This rule goes for both men and women. If you as a tourist want to be polite in the country you're visiting, have this in mind.

Quick Tip 2

You see the Hindi priests—or pujari, as they are called—everywhere, as you can't miss them in their long, saffron-colored dresses, and if you visit river Ganges, you can see Hindu priests and devotees taking baths in the river or performing Yoga, while some of them pray while doing extreme things like piercing their whole face with needles, or walking on fire!

Whether you are sending an e-mail across the globe or saying it in person, the following phrases for celebratory events will allow you to express your sentiments in Hindi. In India, the custom of exchanging regards and good wishes is very important. Usually Hindis do not shake each other's hand but do namasTe joining their palms.

In Hindi, "Congratulations" is baDHaii ho. This expression literally means, "Congratulations" and we use it in many special occasions such as a career move, after passing an exam, at a wedding, and so on.

HINDIPOD101.COM SURVIVAL PHRASES S1 #60 - HINDI FOR SPECIAL EVENTS 5 "Happy birthday" in Hindi is janm Din mubaarak ho. The first word janm Din means, "birthday." Next, we have mubaarak ho literally means "Congratulations or greetings". All together, we have janm Din mubaarak ho. Literally, this means, "many years."

Now let's see what we say specifically in other different events that are very straightforward.

"Happy New Year" in Hindi is nayaa saal mubaarak. The first word is nayaa and it means, "new." The second word is saal and it means, "year." mubaarak means "greetings." All together, we have nayaa saal mubaarak. This literally means "new year greetings."
