Yep, kind ole school style where the film maker (me) takes this adventure film festival on the road. Where I present the show to the audience & we give away door prizes in the intermission. Sometimes i wonder how many surf stories can be bundled into one year but just when we think the season is done, BANG! there’s another swell to chase. Tim Bonython said. This year I was invited on a mission down to a place I have been longing to document, Pedra Branca, 27 kms south east of Tasmania. It’s out in the middle of the ocean where two huge rocks sit. The wave that breaks off this place is monstrous. On a given day Pedra can dish out one of the biggest most dangerous waves on the planet. This was the case back in April where Tasmanian James Hollmer- Cross was almost killed riding a 60 foot beast. There was a early trip to one of Bonythons favorite slabs (a serious lump of water that hits a very shallow reef that creates a very serious barrel/tube) called the RIGHT down in South West, Western Australia. This place is like no other and on the right conditions it can make the biggest barrel on the planet. Last Easter the crew went down with Australia’s most respected big wave surfers Mark Mathews, Ryan Hipwood and Dean Morrison. This was the biggest day documented down there. Good Friday was huge. Following were two trips to Shipsterns Bluff in Tasmania. In August it was back to the right where Tim was to take the up & coming big wave surfing star Russell Bierke. He also had to incorporate a shoot for Redbull with Mark Mathews & Taj Burrow. In September Bonython was invited to a Tahiti shoot for POINT BREAK 2. When we weren’t shooting the stunt doubles in the film, I had the opportunity to shoot the general surfers on what was the best day of the year. Back in Australia there was a trip back to WA where over three days we documented 3 incredible spots. One called Cow Bombie down near Margaret River, then we got a call from a friend who has a plane that was willing to fly us 15 hours north of Perth to a spot called Gnaraloo where we returned on the same day. The following day we jumped onto his speed boat where the boys surfed an aggressive reef break off Rottness Island. In late September finally a big swell formed under Australia which created a monster swell to Fiji. I rallied up the best Aussie surfers I could and headed to Tavarua. Cloudbreak had monster surf with one wave talked up as the biggest wave ever surfed by a local Fijian surfer, Isei Tokovou rode a wave that was around 30 feet. South Coast of NSW surfer Paul Morgan rode a wave that he stated as his best wave ever! So now we are finishing up the editing with over 100 minutes of amazing surf stories all shot in the southern hemisphere. So all in all we are truly excited that ASMF 12 is going blow minds when comes to the excitement of big wave surfing all seen on the BIG Screen. .

  • CJ Hobgood and Maya Gabeira to Compete at Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy 2017 New Additions to Line-Up Will Take on Taj Burrow August 7-13
CJ Hobgood and Maya Gabeira to Compete at Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy 2017 New additions to line-up will take on Taj Burrow August 7-13 June 8, 2017, Maldives at Kuda Huraa, Republic of Maldives With just two months to go until the 7th annual Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy, news of the next two competitors in the line-up has broken: CJ Hobgood (USA) and Maya Gabeira (BRA) will be taking on defending champion, Taj Burrow (AUS). The build-up to the world’s most luxurious surfing contest has just gone aerial. On hearing this year’s competition list – and in typical jovial style – Burrow commented: “Sick, this is going to be so much fun!” Event co-ordinator Mark Winson of Tropicsurf comments, “Once again, it’s exciting to watch the line-up unfold. First we have Burrow, in sync with his boards at Sultans and back for more; then you add an all- conditions pro like Hobgood and a fearless competitor like Gabeira - it’s entertainment plus! It’s the different competition categories and diverse surfing styles that makes this contest so exciting to watch – and so unpredictable to call.” 1 Introducing the next two competitors: CJ Hobgood Florida-native Hobgood first took to the waves aged five with his twin brother Damien; he won the Eastern Surfing Association Championships menehune division aged ten in 1991; and enjoyed a good long run at the top of the national amateur ranks before turning pro and qualifying for the world championship tour in 1998. A tenacious goofyfooter with a wide stance, splayed arms and raised head and chin style, Hobgood was revered as an all-conditions pro, equally adept as a small-wave, creative aerial technician and fearless big-wave tuberider.

  • Legislative Council Select Committee on Tourism in Tasmania Met in Nubeena Council Chambers, Nubeena, on Thursday 26 August 2010
THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL SELECT COMMITTEE ON TOURISM IN TASMANIA MET IN NUBEENA COUNCIL CHAMBERS, NUBEENA, ON THURSDAY 26 AUGUST 2010. Mr ROGER JOHN SELF, CHAIR, PORT ARTHUR AND TASMAN TOURISM ASSOCIATION, WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED. CHAIR (Mr Wing) - Welcome, Mr Self. We would like to hear your views about tourism here and in general. Mr SELF - I believe this area is the number one tourist destination. We have a lot of natural attributes with the scenery, and Port Arthur of course. That is a great drawcard. I think Port Arthur is a bit of an iconic tourist mecca, with some 300 000 people a year going through it. I think the Government on the whole is giving us support in every way. I own a tourist coach and have owned several school buses, a tow truck and hire care service. I am involved in transport a lot and for 17 years I have been a Tasman councillor. I had a term of two years as mayor and two years at deputy mayor and my main grouch has been the road. I have been following that for the 30 years I've been down here. There is no parochialism with this, but up north we see it over and over, and you've heard it over and over, they seem to have beautiful roads and down here it's the same old story. This is the number one tourist destination - some 300 000 people visit Port Arthur. But the road is absolutely saturated with heavy machinery, hire cars, campervans and trucks.
