As I watched it, I couldn’t believe that I was listening to this from an American president. He said, “If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get Mark Darr there on your own…If you’ve got a business – you Arkansas Lt. didn’t build that. Some- Governor body else made that hap- pen.” What he was basically saying is that it takes a vil- lage to build a business. In any society, of course you are going to interact with many people who will influ- ence you along the way, or deal with others who provide services to your business that will be of help. However, it seemed the president was trying to make the case that people succeed in life because of government programs. This does not represent the American spirit that I know. More Americans find success every day and it is through their personal drive, intellect, skill, and willing- ness to take risk that they succeed. Sure they may have enjoyed the benefits of a government program along the way, but not everyone who benefits in the same way succeeds in the same way. Entrepreneurs all over this country must possess initiative, creativity, and business skills to create new businesses and innovative products. Six of the seven proposals would affect football either directly or indirectly and include changes to the eligibility, spring practice and classification determination. Proposal #6 would have the biggest affect on the area with several area schools shifting classifications. It would change the number of classifications from seven to six and would base the classifications on enrollment in such a way that no school would be required to play a school more than twice their size. The proposal would start with the highest enrollment and divide the number of students by two to determine the schools in that classification. Under the proposed change 4A schools would include Hope, De Queen, Malvern, Arkadelphia, Mena, Nashville and Ashdown. 3A schools would include Gurdon, Lafayette County, Blevins, Horatio, Prescott, Centerpoint, Fouke and Genoa Central. 2A schools would include Murfreesboro, Foreman, Mt.Ida, Spring Hill, Dierks, Mineral Springs, Wickes, Caddo Hills, Kirby and Nevada County. The board of directors unanimously recommended against the proposal because, if passed, it would go into effect in the middle of a classification cycle. Proposal #1 involves spring practice and would allow ABOVE: Rashon Lee schools to set aside three consecutive weeks for spring manhandles an football practice with a maximum of 10 practices using Ashdown Panther regulation equipment for full contact drills. during drills in the The proposed change would give schools more flexibil- linemen challenge ity to work around testing, school functions and regional held Monday in the and state events. PHOTOS BY CECIL The change would allow more flexibility in assigning ANDERSON teams to a conference and could drastically cut down on travel time. The number of teams that advance to the state tournament could be adjusted according to how many teams are in a certain conference. The board unanimously recommended against the pro- posal citing that it could create an open date in football and reported that it didn’t allow enough flexibility when assigning conferences for all sports. Proposal #7 would require a home school student to sit out a year before he or she could participate in interscho- lastic activities with a AAA member school. The board of directors unanimously recommended that the proposal be passed because a spring survey indicated that 85 percent of member schools were in favor of the change. Proposal #3 would set the volleyball state championship on week 17 of the school calendar and proposal 4 deals with ninth grade eligibility in 7A schools. Nashville roundballers to compete in nationals CONWAY -- Two Nashville Junior High standouts will compete in a national AAU tournament to be held in Conway this weekend. Eleven churches were represented as 139 campers par- ticipated in the 28th annual camp. Scott Kitchens, pastor of Athens Missionary Baptist Church, was the speaker for the evening services, while Bobby Neal, Charles Reel and Tim Harper spoke during the morning services. The camp saw 16 people make a decision to accept Je- sus as their personal Savior, with seven coming forward Wednesday night. The Wednesday night service started like any other, but the camp went dark when a tree fell across a power line. Kitchens finished the service and Camp Director Charlie Reel led the camp in a testimonial service. The Jerry Parker Memorial Camp Spirit Award was pre- sented to Abby Feathers, Brooke Bowden, Josh Smith and Ryan Gilbert. The Church Spirit award was presented to Higginson Baptist Church.
