ON THE RECORD: 28-12 Home | 21-17 Road | 14-5-3 Series | 4-2 Sweeps | W 1 Streak | 2-3 Last 5 | 7-3 Last 10 MCCORMICK, BIELAK LEAD STRONG FINISH: Chas McCormick’s go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning Saturday night pushed the Hooks to a 6-3 victory over Arkansas in the series finale at Dickey Stephens Park. , making his Double-A debut, ensured the late edge would hold, hurling 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief. The Hooks found themselves in an early hole thanks to Joey Curletta’s three-run off in the first. Yordan Alvarez made it a two-run game by leading off the sec- ond with a line-drive opposite field dinger to left-center. Whitley righted the ship after a rocky first, retiring 11 of the final 13 men he faced. He struck out the side in a perfect fourth to finish his night.

Bielak struck out five and held the Travs to three singles from his entry in the fifth through his exit with two away in the ninth. Johendi Jiminian set down 13 Hooks in row after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second. With the Hooks trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Randy Cesar drew a two-out walk from reliever Stephen Perakslis. Alvarez was next and cracked a double into the left-field corner, chasing Cesar home from first. Corpus Christi broke through for three markers in the seventh against Bryan Bonnell. With the bases loaded, Ryne Birk scampered home on a wild pitch. McCormick was next and laced a base hit up the middle, plating a pair for a 5-3 lead. HOOKS | TODAY’S PITCHING MATCHUP | NATURALS

BIG 5-0: The Hooks (49-29, .628) are endeavoring to become the first Double-A club to reach 50 wins. Only 3 MiLB teams have reached the plateau: Bowling Green (53-26, .671) and Lansing (51-29, .638) of the , and Stockton (51-29, .638) of the California League.

BIELAKED: Brandon Bielak was bullish in his Double-A debut last night, leading the Hooks to their first win in 6 games at Dickey-Stephens Park this season. Bielak, selected by Houston in the 11th round of the 2017 draft, out of Notre Dame, is now 6-3 with a 1.94 ERA and 2 saves in 15 games (7 starts) for Corpus Christi and Buies Creek this season. The 22-year-old from Sayreville, NJ is averaging 11.8 per 9 IP. A Carolina League Midseason All-Star, Bielak has permitted just 1 run over his last 6 outings, striking out 27 against 16 hits in 23.2 innings.

CLEANING UP: Yordan Alvarez provided both of the Hooks’ extra-base hits last night. Alvarez, who turned 21 this past Wednesday, is hitting .370 with 4 doubles, 5 home runs, and 15 RBIs in 11 games since returning from a 40-day stay on the disabled list (right wrist). The Cuban slugger is averaging 1 home run for every 15.4 plate appearances, which would pace the Texas League if he qualified for the loop’s leaderboard. Alvarez, who has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games, had played ex- clusively in left field prior to the series at Arkansas. He manned first base Friday and Saturday.

ROSTER UPDATE: The Astros have promoted RHP Ronel Blanco to Corpus Christi from High-A Buies Creek. Blanco went 5- 1 with a 1.73 ERA in 19 games for the BC Astros, while going 4-for-5 in save chances. He struck out 41, walked 18, and held the Carolina League to 1 home run and a .146 batting average. Blanco, a 24-year-old from Santiago, DR, leads Carolina League relievers in batting average against. His 10.2 strikeouts per 9 IP rank 3rd in the circuit.

Blanco has permitted just 1 earned run thru his last 11 assignments, striking out 24 against 10 hits and 7 walks in 22.2 frames.

RUNS AT A PREMIUM: Corpus Christi generated 6 runs on 6 hits (1 2B, 1 HR) to avoid being swept last night. Travelers pitchers ruled the series’ first 2 contests, holding the Hooks to 1 run on 9 hits (4 2B), while striking out 20 batters against 2 walks in 18.0 innings. Corpus Christi hurlers were touched for only 7 runs in 25 1/3 frames. Arkansas managed 23 hits (2 3B, 1 HR) and 12 walks in the 3-game set.

CIONEL TO THE SHOW: The Astros have recalled LHP Cionel Perez while placing SS (back) on the disabled list. Perez is primed to become the 102nd player in the 14-year history of the Hooks to make their major league debut. The hard-throwing southpaw is the first player to go directly to “The Show” from Corpus Christi since 2015 when RHP Michael Feliz, RHP Lance McCullers Jr., and RHP Vincent Velasquez earned the call to Houston.

Perez, rated by MLB.com as the No. 3 Astros pitching prospect, went 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA and .219 batting average against in 14 games (10 starts) for Corpus Christi. The 22-year-old Cuban and Texas League South All-Star has struck out 11.1 batters per 9 innings.

JOE REHAB: Astros RHP , who is working his way back from a sore elbow, escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 6th inning Friday night in what was his first rehab assignment with the Hooks. Smith, expected to pitch this afternoon, is 2-1 with a 5.49 ERA and .214 opponent batting average in 23 games for the Astros this year, striking out 20 against 7 walks in 19.2 in- nings. Signed by Houston as a free agent this past December, the sidearmer is 46-29 with a 3.05 ERA & 1.18 WHIP over parts of 12 big league seasons with the Astros, Mets (2007-2008), Indians (2009-13, 2017), Angels (2014-2016), Cubs (2016), and Blue Jays (2017). Among active relievers, Smith ranks fifth in appearances, tied for fifth in wins and 13th in ERA. He was draft- ed by the Mets in the 3rd round in 2006 out of Wright State University in Dayton, OH.

NEW ADDITION: OF Andy Pineda, promoted Friday from short-season Tri-City, went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his Double-A debut last night. Pineda, a 21-year-old out of Azua, DR, was 2-for-12 with 1 RBI in 4 games for the Valley Cats to start the sea- son. He played exclusively for Tri-City last season, batting .222 with 2 doubles, 7 triples, 1 home runs, 16 RBIs, and 19 steals in 51 assignments. This marks his 3rd season stateside.

SLIDE STOPPED: The Hooks halted their 3-game losing streak last night. It marked the first time Corpus Christi endured con- secutive setbacks since May 24-25. Prior to this downturn, the Hooks had reeled off 10 straight wins. The Texas League South first-half champs are 22-8 since May 26.
