DR. JAMES PUFFER LOYALTY AND CONTRIBUTION AWARD Dr. James Puffer was a three-year water polo letterwinner (1969-71) and member Award Recipients of two national championship teams (1969, 1971) at UCLA. He earned his doctorate Jeff Pflueger (2001) degree from UCLA Medical School in 1976, attaining a family practice residency at Jon Puffer (2001) UCLA Medical Center upon his graduation. He was named Chief of the Division of Brandon Brooks (2002) Joseph Axelrad (2003) Family Medicine in 1983 and helped to make the discipline a department in 1997, Peter Belden (2004) of which he chaired until 1998. Brett Ormsby (2004) Will Didinger (2005) An instrumental figure within the UCLA Athletic Department, Dr. Puffer served as a David Pietsch (2005) team physician and Chief of Sports Medicine until his departure in 2001. He was an James Palmer (2006) Olympic team physician during the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea. In 1991, Dr. Puffer Russell Simpkins (2007, 08) was instrumental in raising funds to endow the men’s water polo program when its Krsto Sbutega (2008) existence was at risk. He served as a mentor to UCLA student-athletes and coaches alike. Scott Swanson (2009) Jacob Murphy (2010) In December of 2001, Dr. Puffer left UCLA to assume the position of Executive Director Brett Hays (2011) of the American Board of Family Practice in Lexington, Kentucky. Jack Bariteau was a three-year water polo letterwinner (1968-70) for the Bruins, Award Recipients helping guide UCLA to its first-ever NCAA championship in men’s water polo in 1969. John Blanchette (2005) Bariteau, along with a group of other former men’s water polo players, helped launch Will Didinger (2006) Michael March (2006) a campaign in the early 1990s to preserve the men’s water polo program at UCLA as Matt Kellogg (2007) an NCAA sport. Bariteau’s name now graces the team’s “Most Inspirational Award,” Chris Allen (2008) in honor of his service to UCLA and commitment to the men’s water polo program Chay Lapin (2009) as an alumnus.
