Those familiar with the geography of the peninsula will readily credit Chief Weller's statement. But there is another re gard, and a most import!lnt one, in which the Weiland canal far exceeds it, and that is in the amount of trade it carries. American papers published a short time ago a statement of six months' business on the Panama. ]. L. Payne, comp troller of statistics at Ottawa for the Dominion of Canada, gives a statement covering a like period of six months on the Weiland canal. The comparison is : Total vessels pa:ssing- Welland canal 3,314; Panama 496. Total tonnage-Weiland canal, 3,494,327; Panama 2,367,244. The number of vessels to pass through the Weiland canal in six months is almost seven times that of the Pana ma, and the cargo tonnage is 50 per cent. greater. When the Weiland Ship Canal is completed it will permit the passage up and down of the largest lake and ocean freight ers. The increased cargo torinage of the large freighters will have the effect of diminishing the number of vessels in A STEAM BARGE, TUGS, AND ONE OF THE FEW SURVIVING service, but it will at the same time largely increase the SAILING VESSELS PASSING IN THE WELLAND total 'cargo tonnage.
