It was on for young & old at the Club Championships at the end of March. Good representation from the blokes, but we were a little shy on female competitors this year. It was good to see a number of parent/child combos - shame they didn’t get to go head-to-head in most of the events.

Rippers have had an amazing second Bucket relay half of the season. EDUCATION UPDATE Congratulations to our new award holders In the second half of the season and with proficiencies behind us (huge effort with 20+ proficiency sessions), we trained two Bronze squads including a large cadet Bronze squad. Our industrious Club Captain and IRB trainers were also busy with IRB Driver and Crew Courses. Beach conditions weren’t great during February and March, which presented a few challenges during training and at assessments.

Some of our new Bronzes after their assessment at Manly Bronze Assessment, which was moved from South Curly to Manly Once again, we received positive feedback on our training from both the assessors and candidates, which is mainly due to the course and training plans that we now have in place, our training team, and the commitment of our members. This season have put through 44 Bronzes, 17 SRCs, 28 IRB Crew, 15 IRB Drivers and 10 more Age

At the end of the season we had 227 active bronze patrolling members and 26 SRCS (per one of SurfGuard member reports) which allows us to run 26 patrols and spread the workload. Out of interest we logged over 4,600 patrol hours last season. And a big thank you to our training team A great team effort this season, especially with the large Bronze Squads where we had a number of trainers helping out at various sessions (Mike Le Geyt, Michael ‘Chuck’ Berry, Sue Hanley, Jodi Le Geyt, Steve Hall, Al Saunders). Special mentions to Kevin Moffat, Peter Allen, Graeme Dominish and Al for IRB Training. Our Assessors attended quite a few branch updates and over 20 assessments this season, which is greatly appreciated. One of our aims this season was to strengthen our training Team in terms of endorsed assessors and trainers. We added 2 Training Officer Bronze Medallion (Jodi, Al), 2 Training Officer IRB (Graeme Dominish, Al), 1 Assessor Bronze Medallion (Chuck) and 2 Assessor IRB (Chuck and Steve Birch).

Caption competition time… Our two new IRB Assessors in action

Special mention to Graeme Dominish (our Chief Submariner), who has finally been endorsed as an IRB Training Officer after what may be the Branch record for the longest period as a probationary trainer. Next season one of our aims is to start bringing through the next generation of trainers (the average age of our training team is over 50) , so let me know if you would like to get involved in training.

Save the dates for next season

Radio Operators Certificate At the start of next season we will be offering this course to SRC holders that are not old enough to complete their Bronze yet The dates are in the Key Events in TeamApp – the first session is from 3pm – 5pm on Saturday 16th September, followed by pizza. Dates for the initial induction session will be advised closer to the time.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Over the past few years a number of members have completed the service section of awards whist patrolling and/or volunteering at South Curl Curl. If you need to nominate an Assessor for this section, please contact Mike Le Geyt.

Do you hold a current Provide First Aid (HLTAID003) certificate? Under our Lifesaving Agreement it is recommended that we have at least one member on each patrol with a current Provide First Aid Award (previous names for this award included Senior First Aid. This is the first aid course that is required in workplaces, and lasts for three years). Before we look at options, we would like to find out if we have members that have a current Provide First Aid Certificate issued by a recognised training organisation other than SLSA. If you do, please could you e mail a scanned copy of the certificate to [email protected] so that we can reflect this award on SurfGuard and see how we are placed.

‘Keep your Tickets up to date’ I’d encourage you to keep your awards current by completing proficiencies for awards. SLSA has implemented maximum time periods which run from your last proficiency date (you can see your awards and expiry dates when you log into the Members’ Portal). Once you exceed these periods we can no longer process proficiencies, and you then need to effectively complete the assessment for the award again.
