Spain Crowned Davis Cup Champions World No The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Spain crowned Davis Cup champions World No. 2 Rafael Nadal led Spain to a fifth Davis Cup title in 11 years with a memorable comeback victory against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro at the Olympic Stadium in Seville on Sunday. In front of a vociferous home crowd, Nadal clinched the all-important third point 16 64 61 76(0) after being forced to come back from a set and a break down in the fourth rubber against his Argentine opponent to hand the home side a 3-1 victory. “It’s the perfect end to the season,” said Nadal on his first title-winning match in Davis Cup. “The atmosphere is really, really unbelievable so thank you very much Spain all the Spanish crowd, all the Argentina crowd that makes this confrontation really, (Photo: Sergio Llamera) really special and unforgettable.” 5 December 2011 Issue 49 The Mallorcan “King of Clay” had given his side the perfect start with a ruthless demolition of Juan Monaco in the opening rubber on Friday. The Spaniard put his friendship with his opponent to one side and blasted him off the court 61 61 62 to confirm his status as the best player in the world on the red dirt. With the score 1-0 to the hosts, del Potro knew he would have to be at his very best if he was to overcome the dogged determination of David Ferrer to level the scores at the end of the first day’s play. What followed was an epic clash that effectively sealed victory for the home team. Ferrer somehow produced a 62 67(2) 36 64 63 triumph in four hours 46 minutes, which not only handed his team a 2-0 advantage but left del Potro physically exhausted for the reverse singles on Sunday. The Argentine doubles pairing of David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank gave the visitors hope of an unlikely comeback after easily defeating Spain’s Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco 64 62 63 in the doubles rubber on Saturday to set the stage for del Potro and Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) Nadal. (Photo: Sergio Llamera) Despite reeling off six games in a row to take the first set 61 and breaking Nadal in the first game of the second set, del Potro could not contain the world No. 2 for long on his favourite surface in front of a fervent home crowd. The Spaniard fought back to take a two-sets-to-one lead before an engrossing fourth set ebbed and flowed. Del Potro had his chance to serve for the set at 5-3 only to be broken and Nadal served for the match at 6-5 and suffered the same fate. The tiebreak was all about Nadal, he held his nerve, winning to love to clinch a memorable victory for himself and his country. “Rafa is Rafa,” said Spain captain Albert Costa after his No. 1 player had secured his team’s victory. “He is a winner; he won this match and this tie. I would like to say thanks to my players. They did a great effort during the whole year and during the whole season. For us, for them it’s very, very tough, and I just thank these guys for the effort.” Inside Davis Cup Nations Ranking Two-year trial for slower balls Results Orange Bowl entries News in Brief This Week Next Week Paralympic Order for Randy Snow Rankings The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Spain remain on top in Davis Cup Nations Rankings Following their win in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final this weekend in Seville, Spain have extended their lead at the top of ITF DAVIS CUP NATIONS RANKING the Davis Cup Nations Ranking. Bouchard, who is the current junior world No. 4, will be looking to pick up her second grade A title of the year after winning the Copa Gerdau back in March. The No. 2 seed is Yulia Putintseva, who finished runner-up at the Loy Yang Traralgon International and AEGON Junior International at Roehampton earlier this year. Highlights for Thiem in 2011 have included winning the Gerry Webber Junior Open and making the final at Junior Roland Garros. The second seed is Junior Wimbledon runner-up Liam Broady (GBR), who will be keen to emulate the success of fellow Brit George Morgan who took home the title in 2010. Two African players are among the seeded players for the event. Karim Hossam (EGY) is the No. 9 seed and Hassan Ndayishimiye (BDI) is seeded No. 16. Both players have had a consistent year with Hossam’s best result coming with a runner-up appearance at the Raquette d’Or, while Ndayishimiye won the SFAX ITF Junior Tournament and became the first player from Burundi to win a round at Junior Wimbledon. Many of the game’s current stars are past Orange Bowl champions, including Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Caroline Wozniacki, and some of the best junior players in the world will be hoping to add their names to that illustrious winners’ list. Page 2 The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com ITF approves trial of slower ball in competition The ITF Board of Directors has approved a two-year trial under the ITF Rules of Tennis allowing the optional use of a Stage 1 green ball in all competition except at the highest levels. The Stage 1 green ball is around 25 per cent slower than a regular tennis ball. The trial period begins in January 2012, with each national federation able to decide which national events can use the green ball. “Some nations are already using the green ball as an option for 12-and-under competition,” said Dave Miley, the ITF’s Executive Director of Tennis Development. “Next year, when the ITF launches a new initiative, ‘Tennis Xpress’, aimed at bringing more adults into tennis, we feel the option to use the green ball will encourage more adults into competition.” The trial, proposed by the ITF Rules of Tennis Committee, allows for the green ball to be used as an optional ball for all levels of competition except professional world-ranking events, Davis Cup and Fed Cup, ITF and Regional Association- sanctioned junior events, ITF Seniors Circuit and ITF Wheelchair Circuit events. “After the two-year trial is over at the end of 2013, if the feedback is positive on the optional use of the green ball in competition, we’ll work to make the rule change permanent,” Miley added. 5 December 2011 Issue 49 NEWS IN BRIEF 21 Nov-10 Dec: ITF East African 18&U Circuit, Burundi & Rwanda 24 Nov-15 Jan: ITF/Grand Slam International 18&U team to North, Central and South America, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica & Venezuela 5-23 Dec: Pacific Oceania Junior Team to New Zealand Page 3 The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com South African Airways ATP Rankings WTA Singles Rankings Position Player Name (Nationality) Points Position Player Name (Nationality) Points 1st DJOKOVIC, Novak (SRB) 13675 1st WOZNIACKI, Caroline (DEN) 7485 2nd NADAL, Rafael (ESP) 9575 2nd KVITOVA, Petra (CZE) 7370 3rd FEDERER, Roger (SUI) 8170 3rd AZARENKA, Victoria (BLR) 6520 4th MURRAY, Andy (GBR) 7380 4th SHARAPOVA, Maria (RUS) 6510 5th FERRER, David (ESP) 4880 5th LI, Na (CHN) 5720 6th TSONGA, Jo-Wilfried (FRA) 4335 6th STOSUR, Samantha (AUS) 5585 7th BERDYCH, Tomas (CZE) 3700 7th ZVONAREVA, Vera (RUS) 5435 8th FISH, Mardy (USA) 2965 8th RADWANSKA, Agnieszka (POL) 5250 9th TIPSAREVIC, Janko (SRB) 2595 9th BARTOLI, Marion (FRA) 4710 10th ALMAGRO, Nicolas (ESP) 2380 10th PETKOVIC, Andrea (GER) 4580 ITF Wheelchair Rankings ITF Junior Rankings 5 December 2011
