LEAGUE GAME

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

Welcome to Blackfield & Langley Football club

Good evening and welcome to Gang Warily for our encounter versus Town FC in the Wessex .

We extend a warm welcome to the players and supporters of Fareham Town FC including the Match Officials, Referee Connor Gates and Assistants Andrew Walker and Brendon Bone.

As this is the first game of our season its all to play for, last season Blackfield and Langley were in the Southern League but as you are aware had to voluntary relegate to save our club. Fareham Town pose to be a formidable opponent as they finished mid table last year with 15 wins, 5 draws and only 7 losses.

Blackfield and Langley unfortunately were put out of the FA cup to Camberley Town FC, unfortunate events seen BLFC go down to 10 men 15 minutes in. A healthy battle from a more dominant team seen us get to the 90 minutes at a 0-0 draw. Not the deserved outcome but it went in the favour of Camberley Town with the penalties, we wish them the best for the remainder of the Cup.

Our next league fixture is away to Cowes Sports on the Isle of Wight on Tuesday 8th September KO 1930, it would be great to see you there.

We wish all in attendance this evening an enjoyable match and a safe journey home.

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1935 After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the Club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the League and made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to compete against the best in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams and the enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to this day. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club’s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1 the club were relegated to the new Division 2 in 2004. The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. 7

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of . Jon continued for a 2nd season finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the team eventually finishing in 14th position and 16th in the subsequent season. The Club had in incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Hastings United, and reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager’s role mid-way through the season, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team who started off brightly but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn’t quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5th in the league and were Russell Cotes Cup winners. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup, losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent, made it to the 3rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and were losing semi- finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup. After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club surpassed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18, winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town and benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 Leagues, gaining promotion for the first time to the Southern League. Season 2017/18 also saw two appearances at St Marys in both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the record in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32 but eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a midweek replay. Success continued in 2018/19 with the Club winning Southern League South Division One and narrowly losing in the semi final of the Southern League Cup. Success on the field of play together with hard work behind the scenes in connection with Ground Grading requirements has enabled another piece of Club history to be created with promotion to the Southern League South Premier Division. Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.

Fareham Town FC – A History of The Creeksiders

There has been organised football in Fareham since the 1880’s, but Fareham Town Football Club in its present form was formed in 1946 from an amalgamation of three local clubs.

The new club played initially at Beaconsfield Meadow (now housing) before moving to Bath Lane and progressed from the Senior League to the Hampshire League, reaching the First Division of the latter in 1953.

During our time in the Hampshire League the club won every honour within the County – the League on eight occasions including five consecutive seasons from 1962/3 to 1967/8, the Hampshire Senior Cup was claimed three times and every other County Cup once. A successful Sunday side, the Fareham Centipedes, won the FA Sunday Cup in 1974.

There are newspaper records going back to the very early days where the club applied to the local authority to move to a purpose built sport stadium here at Cams Alders in 1946, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the club moved to Cams, and we joined the Southern League in 1979 gaining promotion to the Premier Division in 1982. In 1989 despite achieving 51 points we were relegated from the Premier Division – still a record for a relegated club.

In 1998 the club for financial reasons, made the, at the time, controversial decision to play at a lower level and joined the Wessex League Premier Division where we have remained to the present day.

The club have reached the FA Cup First Round Proper on four occasions, the last occasion being in 1988 when after holding United to a 2-2 draw at Plainmoor, we were defeated 3-2 in the replay at Cams.

We have reached the semi-final of the FA Trophy in 1986/87 before losing 2-0 on aggregate to the eventual winners Kidderminster Harriers.

During the run to the semi-final stage Conference Clubs Scarborough and Barnet were both beaten on their own grounds and these two went on to top the Conference table at the end of the season.

The club’s last major honour was a shock defeat of odds-on favourites Farnborough Town to win the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1993.

Now under current Manager Pete Stiles the club is looking ahead to the future with optimism and excitement and becoming a pivotal pillar of the community in the Borough of Fareham. We have a flourishing youth section with teams aging from 6 through to U18’s and have obtained full FA Charter Standard Status for both our Adult and Youth sections, awards were are immensely proud of.

Previous Players to have moved to play in the Football League:

Darren Foreman – Barnsley, Scarborough Ray Hiron – Portsmouth David Leworthy – Tottenham Hotspur, Oxford United Kevin Maddock – Willem II Tilburg (Netherlands) Paul Moody – Southampton, Millwall, Fulham Oxford Domenyk Newman – Reading Alf Wheeler – Blackburn Rovers

Fareham Town 2020-21

Dan Kempson (Goalkeeper)- Signed for this season from Bashley FC and counts Alresford and Bemerton amongst his previous clubs. A vocal keeper who commands his area.

Lewis Watch (Goalkeeper) - Made his National league debut at only 18. Played Wessex league football for several clubs and had trials with both Pompey and Saints.

Charlie Cooper – (Defender/Midfield) Loves to take on defenders with his pace. Is looking to cement his place in the side this season.

Archie Willcox (Defender) - experienced centre back who joined the club last summer. Formerly played for Petersfield, Moneyfields and Eastleigh.

Ethan Jones (Defender/Midfield) So composed for one so young. A bright future is on the cards for this likeable young man who is also at Pompey ITC.

Brad Appleby – (Defender/Midfielder) Former Pompey Youth captain who is comfortable in defence or midfield.

Garry Moody (Defender) – His second season at the club after previously playing for AFC Portchester and AFC Totton. Pete’s no 1 target at the time who has terrorized many a forward in previous seasons.

Connor Messenbird – (Midfield) Tigerish midfielder who is guaranteed to stamp his authority on a game.

Casey Bartlett-Scott –(Defender/Midfield) Portsmouth born player who has just returned from playing in the USA for Colombia and Chicago.

Ben Wilding – Another who has returned from the USA. Ben was on Eastleigh's books prior to spending the past four seasons coaching in Boston.

George Davis – (Midfield) Ever reliable George was previously with Horndean and is our anchor in the middle.

Tom Settle (Midfield) – A new face at the club last season Tom has settled into the side. Spent two seasons at Portsmouth FC. He has plenty of experience at this level for Blackfield & Langley and AFC Portchester.

Ashley Tattersall (Midfield/Forward) – The heartbeat of the side. Ash has previously won the supporters players of the season for 3 seasons in a row and it's easy to see why. Defenders never get a minute’s rest. A crowd favorite who’s played over 300 games for us.

Lewis Stockford (Midfield) - Joined from Baffins Milton Rovers. Deadball specialist Leigh was at Pompey and Hawks. His arrival is a statement of intent by the club.

Calum Benfield - - Followed his brother Josh to the club. Energetic player who is sure to make an impact.

Gary Austin (Forward) – Returned to the club in February 18 from Moneyfields. A prolific scorer for the club in his previous spell as he was at Moneys and Horndean.

Luke Slade (Forward) - Luke is a free scoring winger/striker who joined us this summer from Hampshire league Paulsgrove.

Jack Breed - Gibraltar U-21 international is a manager's dream player. He'll fit in anywhere in the side.

Curt Robbins (Forward) – Another to join from AFC Portchester where he was a prolific scorer for their reserves, but rarely got a look in at first team level. His goals to games ratio to date for us suggests he can also score freely at this level too.

Josh Benfield (Forward)- Having recently joined the club form Paulsgrove and has proved to be a good acquisition, as wells scoring goals, his work rate is phenomenal never giving defenders a minute’s peace

Dave Paskins (Forward) - Southampton born Dave has been giving defenders nightmares over the past few seasons. The 25-year- old has scored 62 goals in just 78 appearances for Colden Common.

Pete Stiles (Manager) –Pete was part of the back-room staff at AFC Portchester doing every job possible except manage the first team and we were delighted we gave him his opportunity to manage at this level. He took over in January 2017 and was instrumental in a remarkable turnaround of the club’s fortunes. When he joined, we were bottom, come the end of the season we finished 12th and had the 2nd best record in the Wessex League for the last 20 games.

Pete is assisted by Matt Powell, Mark Jones & Sam Dixon

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935) BLFC GROUND HISTORY

GANG WARILY

The above is a Replica of an instrument of war used in 1314 at the battle of Bannockburn. These four-pointed spikes were called ‘Calthrops’ and were screwed on the ground to cripple the horses of the invading English Calvary, when the calthrops fell to the ground they presented a lethal point facing upwards causing havoc by piercing the hooves of the horses.

Some years later the clan Drummond were allowed, as a reward for their services to Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, to include calthrops in their coat of arms. When completed, what better than: “GANG WARILY” (Go carefully)

In 1772 member of the clan Drummond came south to Hampshire, part of this land was purchased by a petroleum company, splitting up one of the Drummonds farms. Because of this division the area had to have a new name and so it was called Gang Warily,

Many years later a part of this property was leased for ground extraction, when this was worked out the mayor of Cadland sold the old site to Fawley Parish Council to Initially prevent industrial development in the centre of the Parish. The council arranged for infilling and landscaping part of the deep excavation, later selling off the adjacent land now known as Priestcroft to pay for the project.

Gang Warily Recreation and Community Centre was built and opened to the public by Fawley Parish Council in 1986.
