Hello,

I wanted to make sure you saw this recent Washington Post editorial urging the U.S. to take action against Cambodian Prime Minister , who has banned the Camb'odia National Rescue Party (CNRP) from participating in the country's general elections this month. ! I

Congress Has failed to pass any legislation to curb ~he regime, and while the U.S. Trebsury Department imposed targeted sanctions against a Cambodian general, a new Human Rights Watch report identified 12 other Cambodian generals who were involved in a series of human rights abuses to bolster Hun Sen. I

The editorial states: "It might be too late to uphold democratic principles in the upc~ming election, but the United States should act to save what little remains of Cambodia's democratic institutions ~nd processes. Targeting Hun

Sen's generals-who are linchpins of his repressive rule~is a good place to start.''. I

As you consider covering the Cambodian elections, please let me know if you're inte~Isted in speaking with the exiled · leaders of the CNRP, who could discuss Hun Sen's oppressive regime and steps the U.S. could take to restore democracy in Cambodia. '

Thanks, Nick

Hello,

Below i_s a summary qf recent news around the rapidly deteriorating state of democracy and human rights in Cambodia under the rule of Prime Minister Hun Sen's regime, the response of the international community, and the ongoing I efforts of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) to restore. democracy in the country. Leaders with the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) are available to discuss developments.

• Human Rights Watch· released a new report documenting the history of human rights abuses com.milted by Hun Sen's security forces, ranging from lethal force against peaceful protesters and land confiscations to labor abuses and low wages. In total, the report implicates 12 police officers and army generals, including National Pol.ice_ <;hief Neth Savoeun and military chief Pol Saroeun.

• The Cambodian government will send more than 50,000 observers-including from Myanmar, Singapore and ·China-to monitor next month's general election, despite pr_eventing independent Cambodian electoral watchdog groups from monitqring. Last year, the Cambodian government closed a group of 30 NGO election monitors after accusing them of trying to promote a revolution.

• CNRP leader was awarded the Asian Human Rights Peace Prize by the National Council of Churches, a South Korean rights group, for his efforts to promote human rights and democracy in Cambodia. CNRP Deputy President Mu Sochua received the award on behalf of Sokha, who has been imprisoned since September 2017 on treason charges the UN has called politically motivated. Days later, Sochua led a rally of hundreds of Cambodians in Seoul, demanding the immediate release of Sokha and u_rging Japan to withdraw all support for Cambodia's upcoming elections.

Please let me know if you're interested in speaking with leaders of the CNRP.

Thanks, Nick
