Painting with Scissors Henri Matisse k-2 Henri Matisse was a French artist who created by cutting bold shapes out of bright colors of paper and gluing them on a flat surface. These PAPER-CUTS, as they are called, were often very large. Matisse called this art form “Painting with Scissors.”

Repetition- to repeat art elements such as color and shapes throughout a work of art. Patterns are made by repetition. Organic shapes-shapes that can be found in nature; leaves, seaweed, flowers, etc.…

Matisse,H. The Lagoon Geometric Shapes- shapes that can be mathematically measured, mostly made by humans.

Matisse,H. Let’s get started: Our goal for this lesson: We will interact with organic and geometric shapes as we cut and arrange them into a balanced paper-cut composition that demonstrates repetition. The artwork of Henri Matisse will be viewed and serve as our inspiration.

Materials needed: • Paper in different colors OR white paper and anything to color the white paper with (crayons, paint, markers or color pencils) • Glue • Scissors • Anything else you might want to add (ribbon, fabric scraps, magazine pictures, etc.) Things to consider: Choices! • Composition- the way the objects are arranged in my work of art. • Do I want to create a frame? • Space- what’s happening in the areas around my shapes? • Color- Will I have a theme? (warm and cool, primary or secondary) • Will I add patterns? • Will my picture tell a story? Or be abstract? (just shapes and colors) Repetition IDEA EXAMPLES:

1.Color 2. Draw shapes 3. Cut and glue

Steps: 1. Either use color paper of any kind or white paper that has been colored or painted(see above). 2. Draw a variety of organic and geometric shapes on your papers for cutting. 3. Cut out the shapes, but don’t glue them down yet. 4. When you have all your pieces cut out and arranged the way you like, then glue the pieces of your artwork together.
