By Heidi Soerensen

Early in the morning on 20 January, NATO 19 took off from Geilenkirchen heading for Melsbroek in Belgian to pick up a very distinguished passenger, the Belgian Minister of Defence, Mr. Pieter de Crem.

In Melsbroek Component Commander Maj. Gen. Stephen Schmidt welcomed the Minister, and they boarded the AWACS together. The program for the flight was perfectly put together and allowed the international crew to demonstrate the capabilities of the most modern airborne Battle Management platform in the world.

“It was a busy and very successful flight. Right after the air-to-air refuelling we were controlling a two-versus-two in Belgian airspace. The exchange of data with Link 16 and Link 11 also demonstrated to the Minister that besides detecting objects in the air, the E-3A has an excellent ability to detect objects on the sea, and this enables close cooperation with the Navy” explained Tactical Director Maj. Emmanuel de Craene.

During the flight Maj. Gen. Schmidt provided the After the E-3A flight the Minister met with the Minister with a Component overview briefing, and Belgian Component members in their NSU. the Minister also took the opportunity to sit next “The Minister was very impressed by the NATO to some of the Belgian crewmembers and gain an Mid-Term system and the capabilities of the AWACS. Special Operations Commander visits Component

Text and photo Capt. Richard Komurek

Maj. Gen. (retired) Gary Harrell, who retired from the U.S. Army after serving as the Deputy Chief of Operations at Joint Force Command Headquarters in Brunssum, The Netherlands, visited the Component on 16 January as a guest speaker for a leadership forum event.

Maj. Gen. Harrell spent a significant portion of his U.S. Army career as a leader of Special Operations Forces, and spoke to Component members about his leadership experiences during wartime operations in Somalia and . He spoke in detail about the type of leadership that is required to lead troops into deadly conflict and spoke about his personal experience as one of the commanders of the 1993 U.S. Army operation in Somalia, which was later made famous by the 2001 film Black Hawk Down. On 3 October, 1993, Lt. Col. Harrell helped lead the famous relief mission in Mogadishu which turned into a firefight where two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters were shot down and 18 U.S. servicemen were killed.

During his presentation, Maj. Gen. Harrell stressed that military leaders are not merely managers as in the civilian world. Leadership means leading from the front, putting subordinates before yourself and being part of a family where trust and care are paramount, he said. He also challenged the attendees at the Officer’s Club to “inspire troops to follow you”.
