WHERE LEADERSHIP BEGINS VISION PROGRESS AND PLANS | ST. LAURENCE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY

SPRING 2016 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Pursue excellence.

The past four years taught me the importance of unity. Unity is the state of being whole. It is the opportunity to bring vision to the blind, trust to the uncertain, and courage to the timid.

Building unity is not easy, but should be the priority of every leader. Unity is necessary for success because it aligns the organization toward a common purpose. Our purpose at St. Laurence is to live the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother. This year we focused on Essential Element #7: Pursue excellence in all endeavors.

What does pursuing excellence mean? If our vision is to become the premier school of choice on the southside of , then we must promote a strong academic curriculum and cultivate a desire for excellence. It also requires us to develop an educational culture that fosters growth of the whole person, higher order thinking, and life-long learning.

These tasks allowed us to lay the foundation for continued success. I am proud of the St. Laurence community and our most recent accomplishments. I pray these accomplishments ensure the trust of our faculty, alumni, parents and students. As Mark 3:25 states, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” Jesus made this statement knowing the difficulty of executing initiatives and eatingcr change. He understood that leaders must align vision, trust, and courage in order to build a home where everyone is welcome.

St. Laurence’s doors are open to you, and we always welcome you back. Our community is the foundation for success. Unify with us through prayer, time, and financial commitment as we continue on our future endeavors. Thank you and God Bless.

Warm Regards,

Joseph A. Martinez ‘99 President VIKING WELCOME

My involvement in many extracurricular activities in elementary school has taught me to manage my time well, be a team player, and given me many leadership qualities that I hope to expand on at St. Laurence. Playing several sports, being the captain of my football team, an altar server, a member of student patrol, and an active boy scout, have provided me with opportunities to serve my community and become a well-rounded young man. Attending St. Laurence will only further my leadership abilities and encourage my drive to succeed. The times I have spent at St. Laurence over the past few years have reinforced my decision to attend this great school. I have attended events such as baseball and football camps, football jamborees, open houses, and shadow days. I have gotten very Kyle McHugh ’20 familiar with the school campus, and many of the current students, teachers, and coaches. Whenever I visit St. St. Symphorosa School Laurence, I can feel the sense of “home” that so many students have told me about. Walking the halls of O’Toole Scholar, Leader Scholar, Viking Award St. Laurence, I already feel like I am a part of the special Viking family. Winner

VISION | SPRING 2016 4 ACADEMICS Strengthening our incorporation of technology in the classroom, our incoming freshman Class of 2020 will be 1:1 with iPads.

St. Laurence’s 1:1 Program Several years ago, St. Laurence recognized the value tech- nology has in enhancing education, and started the process of incorporating technology regularly into the classroom. After restructuring the curriculum, which is now project-based and emphasizes real world application and deep level analysis, the next step is incorporat- ing 21st century technology that will enhance our StL STEM curriculum.

Our incoming freshmen Class of 2020 will be the first class at St. Laurence to go 1:1 with iPads. This means that each freshman student will use an iPad to enhance his education. Jim Muting ’73 Currently, each teacher has received an iPad and is receiving ongoing professional devel- Principal opment from department tech leaders, DePaul University, and other educational leaders.

While this is a new addition to St. Laurence’s technology plan, we have a long-standing Computer Lab Assistant Program and Computer Coding Class offered through Lewis University that empower students to develop tech skills.

Lewis University Coding Class St. Laurence started a partnership with Lewis University last school year, offering free on-site dual enrollment classes for college credit. A new Lewis dual enrollment Computer Science coding class is now being offered, taught by Dr. Klump, a professor and Chair of the Computer and Mathematical Sciences Depart- Dan Turney ment at Lewis University. Dr. Klump teaches a group of students from the Computer Lab Assistant Principal Assistant Program, who are under the direction of Mr. McLean. These students are being of Curriculum exposed to college-level Computer Science and a variety of technology topics.

ACT Prep Class This December, many members of our junior year O’Toole Program took the ACT after completing a 10-week ACT Prep course facilitated by St. Louis University Dean of Law and St. Laurence alum, Mr. Dan Keating ‘79. The experience greatly improved our student’s ACT scores in all categories. Some students increased their composite score by 6 points. Our students have been applauded for their hard work and are encouraged to continue to prepare for the ACT and take the test multiple times. Research shows this method is the ideal approach to improve ACT scores. January began STL’s second ACT Prep Course offering at the school through ExcelEdge.

”If it meant improving your overall score by 6 points, would you get up at 8:00 every Saturday for 12 weeks?” Well, this is the question that I chose to answer by taking Mr. Keating’s ACT Class. Mr. Keating, a law professor at Wash- ington University in St. Louis, did a wonderful job of helping me prepare for the ACT when he held a free prep class every week. By having the class spread out, it helped me reinforce and keep in mind the information when I needed it for the test. I am so grateful for this opportunity and know Dennis McCarthy Class of 2016 that I could not have had this chance anywhere else. 50 Years Have Gone By! It’s time for a reunion of the Class of 1966. We’re putting together a weekend of events, and you can choose to be part of any or all of them. On Friday, September 9, we plan to tailgate for a couple of hours before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff of the St. Laurence vs. Bishop McNa- mara game. Saturday’s events are tentative, but plan on a Sunday morning mass, September 11, dedicated to our deceased classmates, followed by a brunch. Spouses are welcome. Details to follow.

Please check out the list of missing 1966 graduates below. If you know the whereabouts of any of them, let us know so that we can add them to our contact list. If you would like to research the whereabouts of any lost alumni, please do so. The larger the turnout, the better the festivities.

If you served in the military, please contact Ed Kozak at 708-458-6900, x 244 to be recognized at the reunion. We will be in touch with updates and more information.

We could still use your help as part of the committee. Please contact Adam Lotus at 708-458-6900, x237 if you’re interested.

Lastly, thank you to the Class of 1965 for their generous class gift. They raised $3,875 to support St. Laurence!
