Sept. 11, 2018 marked 17 years since 2 the 9/11 terror attacks which shocked the world. It was a time for the USAG Benelux community to remember and honor all the victims and families. Nearly 3,000 men, women and children lost their lives. In Chièvres, the 9/11 Patriot 5K Run/ Walk started September 11 at 9:11 a.m. Dozens of family members participated in the event. Some runners brought their children, sometimes in a stroller. Army Sgt. Zach Beauchamp, who works at the SHAPE Healthcare Facility, was there with his two daughters, Scarlet 3 and Harlee. "I like to run. I saw the race and for a good cause I just thought I'd come and do it," he said. Beauchamp is used to run with his daughters with a stroller, but this run was not like any others. It was a moment of remembrance, recollection and contemplation. All the participants shared their efforts together for the same reason. Seventeen years after the tragedy, Beauchamp remembers very well what he 3 was doing that day. "I was in sixth grade, I was in recess and then we all had to come 1. 9/11 Remembered in Brussels By Rhonda Serna Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation

On Sept. 11, 2001 at 8:45 a.m., the first plane flew into the north side of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. What started as a cool, crystal clear New York morning was overshadowed by plumes of black smoke and fire. This day would lead to a series of tragic events that not only changed America and the world but would be defined forever in history as one of America’s darkest days. Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation hosted their annual 9/11 5K Remembrance Run Sept. 8 in Brussels. This marks the 17th year anniversary or the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania attacks in 2001. This annual run is a reflection on the lives lost, those who put their lives on the line, and the unity and resiliency of the American people. It was a sunny and cool morning as 39 participants came to pay their respects, including Raymond Myers, deputy garrison manager in Brussels, and his family. Dan Fraizer, supervisory sports specialist for Brussels Fitness Center, gave a heartfelt memorial speech and brought one of the younger participants forward to send the runners on their way with a robust “on your marks, get set, GO!”. After the race, participants helped themselves to free t-shirts and refreshments. The community is grateful for participants coming Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation hosted their annual out and paying their respects by remembering those who 9/11 5K Remembrance Run Sept. 8, 2018, in Brussels. At the village of Maizeray, Donovan took 30 men and outflanked a German position that was putting up a fight, forcing the enemy to surrender. The New York regiment reached its objectives for the first day by 2 p.m. The New Yorkers were amazed to find German dugouts with running water, electricity, and dining and recreation areas. Over the next two days the Americans continued to attack. The 165th Infantry Regiment advanced 11 miles, retook five French villages and captured 350 German soldiers. On Sept. 14, 1918 the 42nd Division was ordered onto the defensive to pre- pare for a German counterattack. The men patrolled and watched the front. [17] September 14, 2018 Highway Construction and Road Closures You may experience some delays while driving in Belgium this season. Road construction projects are occurring throughout the country and may result in temporary lane closures and road congestion. We will provide regular updates to ensure that the community is informed and prepared.

Brussels-Mons (E19/A7):The traffic conditions have changed on E19/A7 highway at Arquennes, in the direction of Mons, due to a new road construction project. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained, and the speed of traffic is reduced to 70 km/h. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

Andenne/Daussoux (E42/A15): The three-way yard project between Andenne and Daussoulx (15 km in both directions) is almost finished! After a year of work, drivers can now use three lanes of traffic.

Brussels: Road construction is still ongoing in the Reyers-Montgomery Tunnel in both directions and in the Reyers-Meiser Tunnel in the direction of the E40. Drivers who travel to Brussels from the ring are asked to use alternative routes Outside the Gate via the A12, the Leopold III Tunnel and the E411. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Schinnen (A76): Due to the construction of the new on and off ramps on A76 (Highway -Geleen), exit Schinnen #4 from Heerlen towards Geleen is closed. This results in the closure of the hard shoulder on both sides of the highway and a speed restriction of 70 km per hour until Jan. 31, 2019. Traffic should follow the yellow signs directing them to exit #2 Geleen- and then access #2 on the A76 direction to Beek-Schinnen. The new A76 on and off ramps are scheduled to be completed this fall.

Please be cautious and patient while driving at all times. If you have questions or would like to report other highway construction sites and road closures, please email the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Public Affairs Office at [email protected].
