FLATTEN BRINGS DESIRE, DETAIL TO 2008 MAVS COACHING STAFF

Mark Flatten wanted to coach college baseball enough to do it for free. Last season, Flatten left a successful high school and summer coaching career to join UT Arlington’s coaching staff with all the chores related to the program - field maintenance, drills, game management, infielders, outfielder and pitching. Whatever the job, Flatten did it. The California native did it well enough to earn a full-time job for this season. Flatten will be in charge of hitting and infielders while also helping with recruting. “I think what stands out about Mark is his amazing attention to detail,” says UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas. “In addition to his knowledge of baseball and ability to work with kids, it’s making sure everything is taken care of that makes him so valuable to us.” Most recently, he was head coach of the Southern California Fire in the Southern California Collegiate league. His team went 29-11 and won the regular-season championship and NBC Regional Qualifying tournament. Flatten came to Arlington after spending the previous summer as an assistant coach with Plano Blue Sox of the Texas Collegiate League. Prior to his time in the TCL, Flatten spent three summers as the head coach of the Orange County Connie Mack Summer League team, Trombly Baseball. In 2005, Flatten led his team to the Orange County, California State and Western Region championships, while finishing as the runner-up at the Connie Mack World Series. Flatten spent six years as a high school coach in California where he compiled a 102-63 record while spending three years each at Lutheran High School (2003-05) and Pacifica High School (2000-02). Flatten's teams never finished below third place in the conference and he led his team to four appearances in the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, reaching the state semifinals in 2004. Flatten is no stranger to the college ranks as he served as a volunteer assistant on Tim Jamieson's staff at Missouri. Flatten worked with middle infielders and outfielders, while also serving as the first base coach for teams that reached the Big 12 Tournament in 1998 and 1999. “I’m excited and fortunate to be here,” Flatten said.
