WASHINGTON SUMMER STATE UNIVERSITY VERGREEN Wednesday, July II. 1984 Established 1894 vol. 90; No. 157 A chance for the gold Olympic team has diversity by Grelchen Hanna Campus Editor The U.S. Men's Olympic Volleyball team has diversity in terms of pla>ers" abilities, techniques and personalities. This diversity combines to make a strong team and a golden combination. A prime example of this diversity could be observed last Sunday as the team pla)ed its first intrasquad match at the Bcaslcy Performing Arts Coliseum. Some players contributed most by dis- playing excellent kills, perfect sets, strategically placed serves or scramb- ling for the ball. Each team member has spccial con- tributions he gives to the team but each one can perform any task on the court. Dusty Dvorak, the number one setter for the team, makes other contributions besides just setting. "I'm a more all-' around player than other setters around the world." he said. "I'm an effective blocker, decent server and defensive player, but I primarily play in the front row." he said. Besides these attributes. Dvorak offers consistency for the team. "Con- sistency is the key in setting." Dvorak said. The hitters relypn the setter for good sets night in an<J night out. Chris Marlowe, captain of the team, has an unusual serve technique. He either serves the ball under hand causing a moon-ball which nearly touches the rafters or takes a running jump, striking the ball while suspended in the air.
