2 - President’s Letter Someone You Should Know: Fr. Michael Burrows OSB ’70 by: Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ’59, Director of Planned Giving

In early June 2020, Fr. Michael Burrows OSB ’70 will celebrate, along with his 1970 classmates, his Golden Jubilee of his graduation from Marmion Academy. The class of 1970 was the second to last class of the split Marmion campuses - the Butterfield Road Campus for residential students and the Lake Street Campus for day students - with 181 total graduates (68 resident and 113 day students). Father Mike is the only priest among them, although Steve Puscas is a Catholic Deacon and the late Rev. Dexter Perkins was a Baptist minister.

Father Mike is a proud native of Wichita, Kansas. He arrived at the doors of Marmion via his uncle, the late Fr. Joseph Battaglia OSB (renowned headmaster of Marmion for 30 some years and for whom the current Administration Building is named). Fr. Mike tells the story of how he was not going to return to Marmion after his freshman year due to family finances. His mother, Fr. Joseph’s sister, called her brother. Fr. Joseph went to work and found an anonymous Guardian Angel financial aid donor.

After Marmion, Fr. Mike returned home and was a day student at Newman College in Wichita (now Newman University), graduating with a degree in history. He entered the novitiate of Marmion Abbey in 1974 and made his first profession of vows in August 1975, then making Solemn Vows for life three years later. He graduated from St. Meinrad School of Theology and was ordained a priest in April 1980.

Fr. Mike has held a variety of monastic and educational appointments. He received a Masters of Library Science degree from Rosary College, River Forest (now Dominican University), and was appointed librarian of the new Decio Library in 1987. He was an instructor of history and still is an instructor of theology, especially sophomore theology, and was a dormitory prefect in the 1980s, 90s and 00s until the program closed in 2004.

Fr. Mike is best known to current students and recent alumni as Marmion’s Student Chaplain, a role he has faithfully fulfilled for many years. He helped begin Marmion’s highly successful KAIROS senior retreat program and has been a KAIROS leader for all 69 KAIROS retreats to-date, an amazing accomplishment! He organizes the All-School Masses (once a month in the Abbey Church), gives spiritual direction for students and alumni, comforts the sick, and attends as many funerals of parents and alumni as he can.

Fr. Mike has a quiet and unassuming personality that is comforting and compassionate to students, parents and alumni, but, as his students can attest, he is always in charge. In the fifty years since his Marmion graduation, he has had some ups-and-downs but he has faithfully persevered as a valued member of the Marmion Benedictine community. Happy Golden Jubilee Fr. Mike.

Advancement - 13 Student Council’s Water for Water Initiative by: Ben Okolita ’20, Student Council Co-Vice President Thanks to the help of my Student Council peers, Marmion has recently launched the Water for Water program. Water for Water is a fundraising initiative I designed to allow students the ability to carry water bottles throughout the school day, while at the same time to help bring clean drinking water to places in need. Students are able to purchase an exclusive Marmion Water for Water bottle and use it during classes, making this the first year students are allowed to carry water during the school day. Neither Student Council nor Marmion is profiting from this project, as all proceeds from the sale of water bottles are being donated toCharity: Water.

Mr. Marmion Raises $4,000 for Local Family by: Mark Malkowski ’08, Director of Campus Ministry and Student Life On March 6, 2020 Marmion’s Student Council and LEAD program held Mr. Marmion, an annual event that features student contestants from each class who compete in four rounds of entertaining competition in an attempt to earn the coveted Mr. Marmion title and raise money for charity. Thanks to the generosity of all those who attended and the fundraising efforts of Marmion’s Student Council and LEAD program, the Mr. Marmion event raised $4,000 for the family of Mallory Thomas, a young girl in our community with Spina Bifida, as they face Mallory’s ever-increasing medical expenses, many complex physical challenges and surgeries.

Following the competition rounds, a panel of faculty judges awarded the Mr. Marmion crown to senior Ben Okolita! The other contestants included seniors Ben Riner and Anthony Tinerella; juniors Ryan Fitzgerald, Collin Roin, and Anthony Standish; sophomores JT Gollinger, Adrian Ruiz, and Kevin Schoeberle; and freshman Isaiah Smith.

Academy - 15 Class of 2019 Yearbook Pizza Party by: Bill Fox ’74, Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations

Each year, your Marmion Alumni Association welcomes back to campus our newest alumni from the recently graduated class for a Yearbook Signing Party. On January 3, 2020 members of the Class of 2019 joined us in the Leonard Lux Dining Hall for an evening of pizza and fellowship. That night, we distributed just over ninety (90) 2019 Marmion Academy yearbooks to a record number of classmates who returned to enjoy catching up with their friends.

This year we moved the event from our traditional Friday after Thanksgiving to January based on a production delay from our yearbook resource. As it turned out though, our attendance for the Class of 2019 Yearbook Party set a record! We’ve now decided to host this event each year during the college and university Christmas break in an effort to keep attendance strong. We’ve tentatively scheduled the Class of 2020 Yearbook Party on Tuesday December 29, 2020 in the Lux.
