Eva includes a wide variety of repertoire from various Balkan folk singing traditions in her classes: single melody/ unison songs, melody-and-drone songs, three-part harmony songs, and some polyphony as well. To read more about Eva's teaching, please visit www.evasalina.com/teaching/ The series is open to singers with all levels of experience, however, ability to match pitch and interest in singing close harmonies aids in the success of the group learning process. The cost of the 6 week series is $110 (special for FMSNY members). April 8, 15, 22, 29: 7:30-9:00PM, May 6 and 13: 7:45-9:15 PM all in Park Slope. The sound of their voices was just magnificent in the church. The event was a nice mix of anec- dotal stories about Pete, punctuated with the great songs, both his or inspired by him. A particularly poignant moment was when Jane Babits read a poem she had written about Pete. Jan Christensen was emcee, and other singers from near and far added their songs and stories. Geoff Kaufman and Rick Nestler traveled in for the event, despite the storm warnings. Many thanks to Rev. Jason P. Radmacher, pastor of the church, for hosting and co-sponsoring the event. We raised $700 for the Clearwater, and acceding to several requests, this will become an annual fixture on the first Sunday in March. -Heather Wood The New York Packet’s Pete Seeger Memorial Sing With Geoff Kaufman & Rick Nestler We gathered on Sunday afternoon at the historic John Street Methodist Church in lower Manhattan to honor and remember a man whose songs, and life, inspired people around the world. For some of us, he was more, a friend and a mentor whose encouragement helped us to find, and raise, our own voices as instruments of change. I had the pleasure of singing once again in the company of two dear friends and fellow Hudson River Sloop Singers, Rick Nestler and Geoff Kaufman, with my mates in The Packet, and with old friends from the Sloop Singers and the New York folk music community. It went beyond memorable and entered the spiritual as the songs, stories, and memories built one upon the other. The sanctuary was full and the audience was primed to sing and blend its energy with that of the performers on stage to make the walls ring with a warm and joyful resonance. It seemed so right to be here in this beautiful old church, since Pete had sung in so many houses of worship of different faiths in so many places over his long life. Pete could make this kind of magic with seeming ease and we hoped our efforts to pay tribute to him and his wife Toshi would yield at least an echo of that. What happened was much greater, as if Peter were quietly with us all and within each of us, as he was in life when we sang. The three hours flew, yet seemed to last an enchanting forever. We closed standing, holding hands, on stage and in the pews, as the pastor, Rev. Jason Radmacher, led us in “Amazing Grace.” It was a hymn always close to Pete’s heart, and the right way to bring this moving and memorable afternoon to an end. -Jan Christensen (Pictures by Jan Christensen; more of Jan's and Eric's pictures are available online in our scrapbook: http://www.folkmusicny/Scrapbook/Scrapbook.html) The Folk Music Society’s web page: www.folkmusicny.org - 6 - Eileen Pentel By the time you receive this newsletter, I hope that spring has really arrived. Correction in Memories And Thoughts From Members About Pete Seeger March issue correction in Sol Weber's remembrance: We inadvertantly left out the last sentence of the paragraph about Sol and Evy visiting Pete. It was a pleasant visit, Toshi feeding us soup, Pete talking, singing, telling anecdotes. He was a funny guy with the common touch -- he's sung some rude rounds to me which I won't repeat. His charming homebuilt house includes a small bathroom with a tiny picture window overlooking the Hudson River valley, and it has a wooden toilet seat. He cracked up when I asked if he belonged to the Birch John Society! -Sol Weber - 7 - Members' Publications Noted This column will briefly list new musical publications: CD's, videos, articles, etc. by members of the Folk Music Society of NY. Donate Unused Instruments Music has the power to change lives. Students who study music in school have higher grades, self-esteem and are more likely to graduate. That's why there is the WQXR Musical Instrument Drive. Between March 28 and April 7 you can donate your gently used musical instruments at drop off locations in New York City, Northern New Jersey, Westchester and Long Island. Working with partners Sam Ash Music Stores and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, WQXR will repair the instruments and distribute them to deserving music programs in New York City Public Schools. Because music is just the beginning of what a student gets from playing an instrument! Donate your instrument and change a life. Pass it on. Instruments in need of repair/restoration are OK. The program's funding will cover many such costs. They can also provide new cases. http://www.wqxr.org/#!/kids/ Please keep your details current Have you changed your home or email address?
