Tours for our Convention Guests

We have scheduled one group tour for our guests: a “Farm to Table” tour. We also have suggestions for “self-guided tours” that include areas close to our hotel, such as the Museum District; also a Brewery Tour and a Gastronomes Delight Tour! Most of these locations are available via the free trolley system.

Group Tour: Mennonite Country of Central Kansas

Wednesday, May 1

12:00 p.m. – approx. 6:00 p.m. (leaving after the morning class ends) $20 per person includes transportation, farm tour, museum fee, church donation. Lunch is separate.

Come explore the area north of Wichita where thousands of Mennonites arrived in 1874 to begin new farming communities. Escaping religious persecution they emigrated from Russia/Ukraine settling around present day Goessel. They were yearning for hope and freedom and in the process became well known for growing Turkey red winter wheat!

We drive to Newton for lunch at the Breadbasket, a cafeteria style diner and bakery that will give you a taste of the area. They offer a nice selection of food, using locally sourced products, for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

We drive through wheat country to Coyote Gulch Farm to meet Matthew and Laura Voth, our hosts for the farm tour. Coyote Gulch Farm is a 5th generation farm south of Goessel in Marion County, Ks. Part of the farm contains ground originally bought from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1874 when their Mennonite ancestors emigrated from Russia. Matthew will share his passion for progressive farming, using sustainable methods, and the latest technology all the while remembering his roots. He is soft spoken yet captivating, willing to answer any and all questions. He planted winter wheat close to the house so we can walk into the field, cut some green wheat and plait favors right there! The farm ground is uneven and a bit rugged so wear appropriate footwear.

From the farm we will go to the Goessel Mennonite Heritage Museum where we will see seed chests used to bring the Turkey red wheat seed to the new land, and view the old planters, threshing stones and tools the emigrants brought. Of special interest to us as wheat weavers is the Wheat Liberty Bell made out of Turkey Red Wheat for the Smithsonian Museum’s celebration of the US Bicentennial in 1976. The bell’s five and a half foot clapper is a spiral plait with wheat heads for the hammer.

We will end the tour with a short trip to Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. It stands on the prairie as a testament to those who came before and continues to be central to the community's vitality.

Visit “Doc”, a restored WWII B29 Superfortress Doc is a B-29 Superfortress and one of 1,644 manufactured in Wichita during World War II. Doc was found in 1987 rotting away in the Mojave Desert. Since then the historic warbird has been restored to flying status, serving as a flying museum. “Friends of Doc” volunteers have spent the past 15 years restoring Doc. It now resides in a beautiful new building beside the Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport. The exhibit officially opens in March, so it will be available to tour during our convention. Other talented members will teach 12 classes, for a total of 18 classes. • Each class session is 3 ½ hours in length and costs $20.00. 2-session classes will cost $40 (students must enroll in both sessions) • Raisa’s classes will each have a limit of 10 students. o She has one 2-session (all day) class. Students interested in this project must enroll in both sessions.

Skill levels Each class is listed as an Open, Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. These levels are listed on each project’s description page. • Open means that it is suitable for all skill levels and could have a general prerequisite. • Beginner indicates that the participant need not have prior experience with wheat weaving, and there are no prerequisites for the class. • Intermediate means that the participant has a moderate amount of prior experience working with straw, and there could be some prerequisites for the class. • Advanced means that the participant has had extensive prior experience with straw art, there are more specific skills needed in order to succeed in the class, and there will be prerequisites.

Prerequisites • Before signing up for a class, it is necessary to carefully check the prerequisites for that class. • Prerequisites are skills in straw work that the instructor is requesting that the participants already have, as they are necessary for the project but may not be taught in class. • The purpose of prerequisites is to give each participant the opportunity for success and to facilitate a smooth flow of the class such that the project is more likely to be completed in the allotted time. • Adherence to the prerequisites is important. If you do not understand the prerequisites, or if you do not meet them, please contact the instructor.

Pre-work • Some classes may require some pre-work in order to complete the project in the allotted class time. • Please be sure all pre-work is completed before attending the class.

Material kits • Some instructors will have kits for their class. Each kit will list the supplies included, and the student will bring any other supplies needed. Kits will be handed out in class. • Students are required to purchase the class kits. Please bring the exact amount to each class. • Instructors will be notified by the Registrar with the number of students in their class once registrations are completed.

Designation for Project Use: This project is a traditional design in the public domain so members have full use.

Instructor’s Comments: Mixed fiber art continues to intrigue me. I pour over ideas in the Cloth•Paper•Scissors magazine I subscribe to and find decorating journals as a way to explore Various techniques. When I came across a cross stitch kit at Tuesday Morning, I immediately thought of using straw threads instead of the embroidery floss in the predrilled cover. It works! Instructor’s Comments: In Spring around my farmyard hundreds of frogs set up a chorus in April and May – day and night – especially if it’s a “wet” spring. Instructor’s Comments: I designed this tree topper for a Christmas Tree that my art club students were making for the 2017 Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Festival of Trees. In the past we have made ornaments and decorated many trees for Hospice, but since they discontinued the Hospice festivals, I looked for another festival.
