Dear Friends,

I am pleased to tell you that the Nominating Committee has finished its work of faithfully discerning, from among a number of wonderful and worthy nominees, candidates for Elder and Deacon and “at-large” members of the Nominating Committee. These individuals have agreed to serve as either Elders or Deacons for the class of 2023 or as “at-large” members of the Nominating Committee for a two-year term. The enclosed document presents this slate of candidates.

The process for electing church officers requires a Congregational Meeting, which is presently scheduled for Sunday, May 10. Having sought the advice of Charleston Atlantic Presbytery’s General Presbyter, The Rev. Dr. Donnie Woods, on ways to accomplish this important work during this pandemic when we are unable to meet in-person, our Session asks the congregation to take the following course of action.

To begin, please review the enclosed slate of nominees. If you have an objection or further nominations, you are invited to contact Deanna Barteet in the church office (843-722-8882 or 843-696-2391) as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, May 6.

If there are no objections or additional nominations, we will receive the Nominating Committee’s report on Sunday, May 10, by way of common consent. This means we will not have a vote at a congregational meeting; rather, congregants approve the slate by not objecting to it and by not offering other nominations. With common consent the candidates on the slate are elected to the Elder and Deacon class of 2023 and the at-large positions on the Nominating Committee.

If there are any objections or additional nominations to the slate, we will postpone the congregational meeting and election until we can meet in person as such business is not so easily handled virtually or remotely.

This process is only permissible given our present and very unusual circumstances. It also helps matters tremendously that ours is historically not a distrustful process as the members of the Nominating Committee reflect the makeup of the church and are elected by the members of the church. As a person who greatly values our polity, I also humbly acknowledge that it should be a help and not a hindrance. For these reasons and more, I find that the proposed plan is consistent with the spirit of our polity.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact me at 865-456-2235 or Barbara Spell (Chair, Nominating Committee) at 843-224-4616. And, thank you to the Nominating Committee for continuing its work in a challenging time and for a job well done!

In Christ’s Service,
