Shiseido to Introduce LEAF Electric Vehicles for its Sales Vehicles

Shiseido Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, ; hereinafter “Shiseido”) will introduce electric vehicles (EVs) for sales vehicles used by Shiseido Sales Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo). In line with the planned launch in the latter half of 2010 of the Nissan LEAF electric car produced by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; hereinafter “Nissan”), this EV is slated to be initially introduced ahead of other locations at sales offices in the Yokohama area where the development of an infrastructure to support EVs is advancing. With regard to the number of vehicles, among the 30 sales vehicles used in the Yokohama area, approximately one-third of the fleet will comprise EVs. Deploying these vehicles thereafter in other prefectures in is being examined. Nissan and Shiseido are both certified under the Japanese Ministry of the Environment’s Eco-First Company program and are taking a proactive approach in considering initiatives for environmental preservation in the future as a representative companies in their respective industries.

Purpose of Introducing EVs Shiseido has pursued an array of environmental activities based on the philosophy of “striving to protect the Earth’s environment in all its business activities” since adopting the Shiseido Eco Policy, the Company’s management policy on the environment, in 1992. These programs include practicing environmentally responsible product development, establishing a recycling system for used glass containers (expanded in Japan nationwide in 2001), implementing a zero emissions policy at its manufacturing factories (achieved at all domestic cosmetics factories in 2003) and installing a solar power generation system (at its U.S.-based East Winder Factory in New Jersey in 2007). Subsequent to receiving certification as the first Eco-First Company in the cosmetics industry in March 2009, Shiseido has inaugurated the Shiseido Earth Care Project. This initiative is an environmental project in which all Shiseido employees participate that got underway from April with the aim of realizing the Shiseido Group’s basic environmental activities underlying its corporate social responsibility as well as environmental activities unique to Shiseido. Shiseido is striving to develop such activities to be promoted throughout the Company in a sustainable manner, in which respective departments including R&D, procurement, manufacturing, logistics and sales possess a strong environmental awareness and implement environmental activities corresponding to respective fields.

By introducing EVs for sales vehicles, Shiseido will further promote the reduction of CO2 emissions in its sales activities, thereby strengthening environmental activities on the sales front.

Specific Effects Associated with the Introduction of EVs and Future Development

Since the Nissan LEAF does not emit CO2 while it is running, this will enable a reduction in CO2 emissions by sales vehicles following introduction. There are approximately 1,500 sales vehicles used by Shiseido nationwide in Japan. Shiseido plans to consecutively expand the introduction of EVs by considering the timing of leasing contracts at sales offices conducting sales activities and in terms of prefectures where EV infrastructures are expected to develop in the future.
