2016 ANNUAL REPORT Lawyers caring. Lawyers sharing. Around the corner. Around the state. President’s Message The online definition of philanthropy, according to merriam-webster.com reads, “. . . the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.” In early 2016 I invited you to participate in our “Have an Impact” campaign to raise more funds toward our goal of doubling our grant program.

As you know, the grant program works to support those in need of legal assistance through non-profit legal service organizations, making life better for those desperately in need, across the entirety of New York State.

I am pleased to report that a great number of first-time donors have helped us, by their donations to help others during 2016. Our very profession, a helping profession, parallels the goal of philanthropy to “make life better for other people.” The profession of law is a calling that serves the public good. We provide a systemic matrix for the ordering of the affairs of our country and for the resolution of disputes. Lawyers serve the public. Because of you, The Foundation is able to advance our calling in many ways. Your gifts: • assist in providing funds for our grant program to help legal service organizations offer assistance to those desperately in need; “I am proud to work • assist in providing fellowships and scholarships for law students to better hone their skills and offset their law school expenses; with you, the Board • help demonstrate the caring side of the profession, highlighting how attorneys can and of Directors, and staff do make a difference, and • assist in creating new funds to meet the changing needs of society, such as the new Hon. of The Foundation Judith S. A Message to The Fellows My holiday season begins with the purchase of a wreath for my front door to welcome friends, family and to signify everlasting life and growth. Desired Christmas gifts have moved away from gifts of store-bought items to gifts of experiences. Fellows are invited to join The Foundation to support all of its important work and experience the joy of making a difference in someone’s life can have.

Our Foundation utilizes circles to signify various levels of giving and support. We proudly wear our ribbons, colored to signify the circles we belong to, for all to see. The ribbons are tangible evidence of our support of Foundation philanthropy and, much like a wreath on my door, invite friends and colleagues to talk about The Foundation and ways to grow and enhance their support. Not as evident, but just as important, is the result of these circles and the impact they can have on life and growth.

When you are invited to become involved in the Fellows it brings the honor of being recog- nized as a legal professional within your community who acknowledges that the practice of law is a helping profession and that attorneys, as custodians of the legal system, have enhanced obligations of service to the community, to the profession, and to promote justice “Like the wreath on through the rule of law.

We successfully petitioned the Family Court to appoint Julian’s cousin as his guardian, and to make factual findings necessary for Julian to petition for Special Immigrant Juvenile Statues. Enriching the Legal Profession Through generous gifts from the New York State Bar Association Sections and donors, law students from across New York State are able to apply for fellowships and scholarships that provide invaluable educational opportunities.

Two new scholarships were created in 2016 in memory of Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye: the Honorable Judith S. Kaye Children and the Law Committee Scholarship, and the Honorable Judith S. Kaye Commercial and Federal Litigation Scholarship. Both scholarships were established in honor of Judge Kaye’s passion and commitment to making a difference through the legal profession.

In total, more than $90,000 was distributed, giving students the platform and knowledge to build a solid base for their career goals. The impact of these experiences on each student as they begin their professional pathway is remarkable. Thank you to our generous donors and Sections that support these invaluable programs.

Foundation and Commercial Federal Litigation Section Create New Scholarship Opportunity for Women

Through a gift from the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association, The Foundation and Section proudly created the Honorable Judith S. After a rigorous review of numerous sub- missions from women litigators throughout the State, the Scholarship was awarded to five female junior litigators from a vari- ety of backgrounds who displayed the outstanding qualifications and ambition to become first-rate commercial litigators. “It was gratifying to see so many qualified professionals apply for this prestigious honor,” noted Lauren Wachtler, a for- mer Chair of the Section and member of the selection committee. “The Kaye Pictured left to right are: Lauren Wachtler, Foundation Board Member; Luisa Kaye, daughter of the Hon.
