.168 A CHECK-LIST OF BUILDINGS

A CHECK-LIST OF THE SACRED BUILDINGS OF SUFFOLK, TO WHICH ARE ADDED GILDS. BY CLAUDEMORLEY,F.E.S., F.Z.S. The Suffolk Place-names need standardising ; and this is .here attempted. Under each Place have been arranged in order its :-1. (Gilds)Gildhalls ; 2. (grave- yard, market, wayside, boundary and other) Crosses; 3. (Augustinian, Dominican, Franciscan and Carmel- ite) Friaries ; 4. (the regular monks') Abbeys and Priories ; 5. (the military monks') Preceptories and Commandries; 6. (leper and other) Hospitals ; 7. Hermitages ; 8. Colleges of secular priests ; 9. Chapels ; 10. Churches, including the three Cathedrals of South Elmham, Thetford, and Bury. Churches mentioned, though hardly ever named, in Domesday Book are specifically dated " 1086 " ; for the purpose of this List I have rarely carried their origin back to those Anglo-Saxon times wherein so little interest is now evinded. The date " 1086 indicates that the church quite plainly emerges at that period, though occasionally under a different village, here added in brackets. Several points touching their dedications need elaborating,, e.g., how many are ascribable to The Virgin, to Mary Magdalene and to the six other canonised Manes : pre-Reformation Chapels are more explicit. Several Chapels, standing entirely apart, in the graveyard, or .distinctly outbuilt from churches, alone are enumerated ; though their discrimination from those within churches is often obsctre. Chapels, altars, tabernacles within churches would fully double, the present List ; and such, now recoverable, were A CHECK-LIST OF SUFFOLK BUILDINGS 169 but a tithe of those existent in Romanist times. I find 497 medixval- churches still in use. as such ; 38 are unused as such; and mainly rnined ; and no more than seventeen modern ones have been erected during the past century, upon new sites, giving a total. of 552in Suffolkto-day. All are rectories ; unless noted, along with the Monastery holding the impropriation. To avoid vain repetition the followingabbreviations are employed :--

Ch. for church. Pr. „ priory. a. „ before (never anno). p. „ after. ;, about. f. „ founded. V. „ vicarage. m. „ mentioned. demolished,dissolvedor washedaway by the sea. AS. „ Anglo-Saxon.
