1 BENEFICE MAGAZINE – February 2020 Edition for the Parishes of Herriard with Winslade, Tunworth, Upton Grey and Weston Patrick

Message from Rev Alison Brown, All Saints, Dear Friends, This is my last letter to you as Parish Priest of All Saints and it is written to you all with the emotions of both gratitude and sadness. Sadness because I will be leaving the parish I have loved living and working in; gratitude for all the friendships and fellowship I have with so many people – for the sensitivity and support that Steve and I were shown when we lost our son. The start of any new year is a new journey. No-one can be sure how it will be, and as with most journeys we can expect the mix of the predictable and unexpected, excitement, scary, funny, happy or sad moments. The perspective we have as Christians is to know we do not travel this journey into the future on our own; we have the assurance that Jesus, the light of the world, is with us, beside us, and always there on our journey through life. As a theologian said ‘the safest place to be in life is close to Jesus’. My prayer for all at the start of this new-year and decade is this: Our Father and our God, as we stand at the beginning of this new year, we confess our need of Your presence and Your guidance as we face the future. We each have our hopes and expectations for the year that is ahead of us – but You alone know what it holds for us, and only You can give us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet its challenges. So help us to humbly put our hands into Your hands, and to trust You and to seek Your will for our lives. AMEN With my love to you all, Alison

Message from Mary-Beth Hawrish, Long Sutton & Like Alison, I now find myself a retired parish priest. It’s time for reflection and to give thanks. I’d like to share with you one of my favourite passages from the Bible, taken from the book of Numbers in the Old Testament: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face shine upon you, be gracious to you;and give you peace. 2 This blessing is often used during worship services in Church. If you’ve ever come for a blessing at the Communion rail, you may have heard me pray this over you… or , perhaps, for the whole congregation, at the end of the service. So as my ministry closes here in North , I want to wish God’s blessing upon you all. Here is my modern version: May God keep you safe in every way. May he look after you and provide for your every need. May He bring you peace which goes far beyond the peace of the world. May His peace bring good health and well-being to each of one of you. And may His peace bring social and physical health to the whole community, bestowing holiness upon all. Blessings are truly wonderful because they’re so reciprocal – they’re both given and received. God blesses us and we receive His blessing. As Christians, we are blessed by God in many ways, but especially through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, whom we have the great honour to receive by taking Jesus into our hearts. I hope He has found a permanent home among us. From my husband Len and me, our thanks for all your love and support in the past three years of my ministry. You have been our blessing. It’s been a privilege to serve in our church network, especially in Long Sutton and South Warnborough where I’ve been the parish priest. May you receive God’s wonderful, abundant blessings in the years ahead. Rev Mary-Beth Hawrish

Events for your diary Wednesday 5th February – All Saints After School, All Saints Odiham, 3.15–4.30pm Thursday 13th February – Long Sutton School Messy Church, Long Sutton School Hall, 3.15–4.30pm Tuesday 25th February – Pancake Feast, All Saints Odiham, 2.30– 6.00pm (£3.00 per plate – all the pancakes you can eat!)

4.30pm Tea-Time Services Upton Grey 4.30 Tea-time services will now be on 2nd Sunday of the month, not the 4th Sunday. Similar services, planned for the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at St Andrew’s South Warnborough (to which, as with the Upton Grey service, the whole benefice is invited) will begin in March.

Sparks The Sparks activity, which last year took place on the second Sunday of the month, is being paused for the time being.

Love What is the thing we think about most during February? With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love might be on our minds – the love of our family, our friends, and of God. But what does love even mean? Love means something different to all of us. It might mean being cosy with a hot chocolate and a film with our family, it might mean big hugs to all our friends when we go back to school, or it might mean that fuzzy feeling we get inside when we just feel special. In the Bible, Jesus shows us what love means to him by healing the sick, being kind to everyone and spending time with his friends, who are sometimes called his disciples. He even says that’s how we know we are his friend, if we love others! What’s special about Jesus’s love is that he asks us to love those who don’t love us or whom we don’t even know… Now, that’s not quite as easy! 5 Jesus told the story of The Good Samaritan, where someone was hurt at the side of the road, and all the people who should have stopped to help were too busy. Finally, the man from a different country passed and stopped to help – even paying for the injured man to be looked after at the local inn. I wonder if, this month, each of us can find a way to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and show people what love means through our actions. Fill in this chart during the month, with ways you’ve loved people like The Good Samaritan did! Helen Chatsfield: Tel: 07540 140228

Local Police Report Dear Residents I will start with recent crime and am appealing for any information or witnesses to the following incidents: On the night of January 6th/7th, garages were broken into at a house in Winslade and, although damage was caused, nothing was stolen. On the night of January 10th/11th, two premises in Weston Corbett had outbuildings and garages broken into with various garden machinery such as chainsaws, hedge-cutters etc. being stolen. On the same night, a similar crime took place at the outbuildings of a house on Basingstoke Road at Upton Grey, the thieves coming via fields from Cleves Lane. In nearby Up Nately and Mapledurwell similar crimes took place during the same period. In late December and early January, I stopped two active criminals driving around our area, in separate vehicle at separate locations, one in the Upton Grey area; both are well known for burglary and, by stopping them, it lets them know they have been seen. I continue to urge all residents to please report any suspicious sightings of vehicles or people to the Police via 101 or direct to me. It helps to know who is about. 6 As promised below is the chart for reported crime in yours and the neighbouring parishes for 2019. It is important to stress that this is reported crime; sadly a great deal of crime goes unreported, so the figures provided are only those of actual crime recording. For such reasons it is important that if you are a victim of ANY crime, you should reported it via 101, or if an emergency 999, or give me a call direct. We need to know, as it may be part of a trend, linked with other crimes or particular criminals, who may have just moved into an area or perhaps passing through, but we need to know. Across the Candovers and Upton Grey ward, which consists of 22 parishes, reported crime rose in sixteen of them, five saw a reduction and one Parish, Nutley, saw no reported crime. The largest recorded crime increases were Herriard where seventeen more crimes were reported than in 2018, Ellisfield, with ten more, Preston Candover thirty-six more and Upton Grey twelve more. Parish 2018 2019 Upton Grey 11 23 Herriard 24 41 Weston Patrick 5 9 Weston Corbett 2 2 Tunworth 12 9 Winslade 10 12 Many thanks for your continued support as always Andrew REID, Local Beat Constable PC 3746, Tel: 01256 389050 Mob: 07768:776844 email: [email protected]

News from Long Sutton C of E Primary School This term we are planning lots of activities which promote active lifestyles, including skipping workshops and a Dance Festival held at the purpose-built Dance Studio at Lord Wandsworth College. We are also looking forward to taking 40 children to the O2 to take part in Young Voices, where they will perform with 8000 other children, plus Tony Hadley! The children gain so much from sporting and musical enrichment activities and we aim to provide regular opportunities in these areas. The closing date for Year R applications for September 2020 has now passed, however late applications can be made. If you have children due to start school in September and would like to arrange a tour of our school, please make contact via the school office on 01256 862238 or [email protected]. Lent Lunches Just a reminder that Ash Wednesday falls on 26th February this year and our Lent Lunches will start in the first week in March and run through until Holy Week. If you would like to host a lunch (a very simple affair of soup and cheese) please could you get in touch with me with your preferred date(s) so that I can coordinate the programme. So far two lunches have been arranged: 5th March at Old Barn House by invitation of Annabel Acheson Grey (861351) and 18th March at The Old Post House by invitation of Tessa Morrish and Frances Yeowart (861218). As in previous years, the lunches begin at 12.30pm, finish at 2.00pm, and are casual and convivial occasions. Please telephone your hostess to let her know that you will be coming and also please give generously to the charity chosen. Full details of further lunches will be listed in the March parish magazine. Jill Lestrille, Tel 862131

Third RNLI Concert Hi everybody! Well, you didn’t expect us to still be here, and neither did we… BUT, seeing as we still are here, we have been getting requests and suggestions that, rather than sitting on our bottoms waiting to sell the house, we should actually run another music concert for the RNLI… which would make it our third RNLI Concert. So I am delighted to tell you it will be held on Saturday 28th March in Upton Grey village hall as usual and will start at 7.00pm. I am also delighted to say that we have our favourite band HEAD NORTH coming back again to wow us with their fantastic Celtic/Irish/Amercian music that will have you all clapping and dancing and bouncing along. We also have several other well known local players and groups, many of whom you know from the Hodd music 8 nights… maybe even a few sea shanties as well and some participation songs for you to enjoy. So all in all another fantastic evening of song, music, silliness, choruses and foot tapping fabulousness awaits you all… go for it… you know you want to! There will be the usual bar and nibbles, beer and wine and a raffle as well. Tickets are available now at £10.00 each (same as last year). Please email me or call to reserve as they go quickly. Tables will be set up and if you have a large group a table could be reserved (if you ask nicely). So… please let everyone know… fellow villagers, friends, relations, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandkids and distant cousins… all welcome, bring hands for clapping, feet for tapping and voices to join in the silly bits please. Looking forward to seeing you all there again. Tickets from [email protected] or 07989 542883. Dave and Cas Peace

TEA@3 Jill and Terry have kindly invited us to hold our February tea at Barn Cottage, Weston Road. This will be on Thursday 13th February, so do come along and join us. If you have not been to one of our teas before and would like to join us, we would be really pleased to welcome you. (You just have to be 60 plus to qualify!!) Safari Supper Saturday – 14th March 2020 Last year, we welcomed some new faces to Upton Grey’s Safari Supper, and we hope this year we shall see even more of you. The Safari Supper is a hilarious opportunity to travel the village in aid of St Mary’s Church and end up being very well entertained, fed and watered. It is a fun evening, not to be missed, where you provide one of three courses and move around the village for the other two. At the end of the evening of laughter and surprises, everybody congregates in the village hall for coffee, after dinner drinks and tales to tell. If you have a young family, you could request a starter course to give time for children to settle before going out. Just book a babysitter. If you are alone, why not team up with a friend and join the fun. It’s a fantastic way to meet new villagers and experience another flavour of Upton Grey. Put 14th March firmly in your diary. Please fill in the form printed on Page 15 of this Magazine and send it back to us with your payment by 21st February. We hope to see you there. Let’s make 2020 a Safari Supper to remember. 10 TUNWORTH NEWS

January 2020 –News from Tunworth A gloriously sunny Christmas morning saw 93 people of all ages, a new record in living memory, throng together in our small church at 11.00am to sing Christmas carols, enjoy friendship and work up an appetite for Christmas lunch! Our sidesman, James Whitcombe, and our Church Warden, Mark, did marvellously well to ensure that everyone could be seated, and extra chairs were dragged into the church just in the nick of time. Our Christmas service followed the same pattern as that of the well- known King's College carols from Cambridge every Christmas Eve. Seven biblical lessons were read, each one followed by everyone standing up to sing a carol heartily. Old favourites such as O Come All Ye Faithful and O Little Town of Bethlehem received rousing renditions from all and the church walls seemed to shake as if in agreement. Most of the lessons were read, movingly, by some of the many children there, who captured the true spirit of Christmas perfectly. The final lesson was from John 1:1-5: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not. Thank you to Simon and our wardens, Edwina and Mark, for all their hard work and for such a wonderful end to the year! We look forward to starting 2020 with one of our main events: the Tunworth Safari Supper on Saturday 1st February, to which all in Tunworth and surrounding villages are invited. Please contact Edwina Spicer for more information (Tel: 01256 471271).

WESTON PATRICK NEWS

Christmas Carol Service – 21st December 2019 A big thank you to everyone involved in Weston Patrick’s successful and well-attended carol service. The collection raised £543.50 which was donated to the Basingstoke Camrose Centre.

Our talk will be given by Patricia Elkington who will speak about ‘Silver & White in the Garden’. The competitions will be: 1. A Posy of Snowdrops with Greenery. 2. Floating Hellebores. Visitors are very welcome to join us. We are a friendly Club whose members share an enthusiasm for gardens and gardening. During the growing season, we always have a plant stall starting at 2.10pm. Knit ‘n’ Natter Our knit Knit ‘n’ Natter group meets on the second Monday of each month in the Bell Tower at All Saints Church, Odiham, from 2.00– 3.30pm. We are a Mothers Union initiative and so are Benefice/network wide. We knit/crochet purely for charity and always try to include supporting local charities in our projects. All are welcome to join us, for friendly chat and exchange of knitting and crochet ideas and inspiration!

Odiham voluntary care group needs occasional drivers We are a group of volunteer drivers who take people who have no other means of transport to local Doctors, Dentists and Hospitals. We operate in Odiham and the surrounding villages. If you are a driver and can spare a couple of hours a month to help then please do contact me and I will come and talk to you about it. Don’t be put off by thinking this is a regular commitment because it is not. When a client needs transport, they telephone our Care Group line and our Administrator e-mails the details to all our drivers. If any of them are able to do the journey, they respond, and the Administrator emails the client contact details to them. There are no intrusive telephone calls. We have around 25 drivers at present but a number of them are not available on certain days and will be on holiday or have family commitments at times. Some prefer to undertake regular trips but the rest of us typically do one or two journeys a month. A mileage allowance is payable to cover petrol and running costs. If you would like to help, do please get in touch. David Woodward, Hon. Sec., 01256 702712, [email protected] 12 National Garden Scheme – Hampshire What is 2020 going to bring us? Who knows?!
