Results & Heat Details Season 1967 Version 1.14 Notes – season files The full season files we have compiled have been collated from Speedway Publications, magazines, books and programmes. These files list the heat details of every (known) UK official meeting raced during that particular season and also attempt to correct the many errors that have been published in the Speedway press and various publications for that season. The points scorers in the official league and KO Cup fixtures should (in the vast majority of cases) correspond with the official averages published at the end of the season, together with any fixture(s) where the result was amended following an appeal to the SCB. We tried to remove as many errors as possible and of course some will remain. The authors will be delighted to hear of any “genuine” mistakes and/or any missing information such as race times, christian names, etc. Steve Wilkes/Gary Done E-mail: [email protected] Hackney v Glasgow Friday 24th March 1967 (British League) hackney 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 pts bpts tpts 1. A Saint and a Witch 1955 UK Season The expected closure of the Motherwell Eagles took place in the winter with the team scattered to all points of the compass. Bluey arrived at Southampton on the Oriana unaware of the fate of Motherwell; Southampton promoter, Charles Knott, who informed Bluey he had been transferred to the Saints for the new season, met him at the docks.

  • THE HISTORY of SPEEDWAY in EDINBURGH : Part 3 the Provincial League Years
THE HISTORY OF SPEEDWAY IN EDINBURGH : Part 3 The Provincial League Years 1964: CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE WRECKED BY INJURIES 1964 was the year the Provincial League went "black", following demands for reorganisation of the sport by the National League bosses which the PL felt were unreasonable. They decided to go their own way and there was a complete split for a year. From a spectator's viewpoint it made little difference other than the loss of the usual World Championship round (Pl men no longer being eligible). It also meant the calling-up of some new and untried referees, though they seemed no better or worse than the previous lot. Ex-Tiger Tommy Miller was amongst the new group. The team contained no surprises, and as usual they took time to find their feet. Even though Clive Featherby didn't arrive Sheffield won the opening Northern League match in spite of a Doug Templeton maximum. The first three away matches in the competition were all lost, and this included the first match against the re-born Glasgow Tigers for a decade. The Tigers had a top-heavy team and were thrashed 56-21 at Old Meadowbank, full maximums were scored by George Hunter, Wayne Briggs and Doug Templeton. Finally the away win bogey (they hadn't won since 1962) was cracked with two-in-row, a challenge at Middlesbrough, and a 47-30 triumph at Sunderland, and in both these matches Doug Templeton and George Hunter scored full maximums. They were matching each other point- for-point and giving a great lead, but after backing from Wayne Briggs and Willie Templeton the tail was as poor as ever.

  • WORLD LONGTRACK FINALS 1971 – 1996 Tracy Holmes
WORLD LONGTRACK FINALS 1971 – 1996 Tracy Holmes Pre 1971 Before we look at the first World Longtrack Final in 1971, we must take a peek at its prototype, the European Final. The first of these was held in 1957 and won by the Norwegian legend Leif "Basse" Hveem. The term 'legend' is often thrown about like confetti but in this case, it is well earned ! The next 3 Finals were all won by West Germany's Josef Hofmeister. No-one was ever able to achieve the 'Triple Crown' in the World Finals, but 2 riders did it in its forerunner. Hofmeister was joined by another West German, Manfred Poschenrieder winning in '66, '67 and '68. The closest anyone got in the World Final was England's Simon Wigg who won the Finals of '93 and '94, only to be beaten in the Gold Medal run-off in '95 by his England team-mate, Kelvin Tatum! Swedish riders excelled in the Euro Finals, 1954 World Speedway Final bronze medalist, Olle Nygren took the bronze in the '59 Final. Ove Fundin, reigning World Speedway Champion at the time, was 2nd in the '61 Final behind Timo Laine of Finland. Just over a week later, Fundin won his 3rd World Speedway Final. Bertil Strid was Sweden's first Euro Champion, winning the Finals of '62 and '63. The Swedes were interupted in '64 by Denmark's Kurt W. Petersen. On the 12th of September 1965, Swedish star Bjorn Knutson won the Euro Final. A week later, he won the World Speedway Final as well.
